Short answer: You may skip the interview in Pakistan only if you are renewing a B1/B2 visitor visa, your previous visa had full validity and was issued when you were at least 18, and you renew within 12 months of its expiry. Everyone else generally needs an in-person interview, says the US Embassy.

Most Pakistani applicants who hear "interview waiver" assume it is open to any visa holder. It is not. We read the US Embassy Islamabad nonimmigrant visa page on 12 October 2026. The conditions are narrow, and one wrong assumption costs a fee.

The default rule is an in-person interview for almost everyone

The embassy notice says that from 11 August 2025 all nonimmigrant visa applicants applying in Pakistan, including children under 14 and adults over 79, will generally need an in-person interview with a consular officer. The waiver is an exception to that default.

If you are planning a family application, expect every member to be called to the interview, unless the waiver conditions below apply to each person.

Three conditions must all be true for a waiver

The page says waiver cases are B1/B2 applicants who received their previous full validity visa when they were at least 18 years old and are renewing within 12 months of the prior visa's expiration. All three conditions must be true together.

ConditionWhat the embassy page says
Visa typeB1/B2 (visitor and business) only
Previous visaA full validity visa, received at age 18 or older
TimingRenewing within 12 months of the prior visa's expiry

The page does not define "full validity". We could not read a definition on it. If your last visa was issued for a shorter period than usual, ask through the official channel before you pay.

Student, exchange, work and fiance visas are not in the waiver description on this page. Applicants in those categories should plan for an interview.

Your fee stays valid for 365 days

The embassy says the visa application fee, called the MRV fee, is valid for 365 days from the date on the payment receipt. You must schedule an interview or submit a waiver application within that period. The interview itself does not have to happen within it.

That detail helps with planning. If you pay in January, you must book by the following January, but the appointment can fall later. The page also says fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, so a payment cannot be moved to another person.

We have not read the current fee amount on a page we can cite, so we do not state one. Check it on the USTravelDocs site on the day you pay.

How to apply, step by step

You apply through the embassy's service partner. The page says interview scheduling, fee collection and document delivery in Pakistan are handled by a third party company, CGI, through the USTravelDocs site. The visa decision is made by the US government.

  1. Fill in the online nonimmigrant visa application, form DS-160.
  2. Pay the application fee through the USTravelDocs site.
  3. Schedule an interview, or submit a waiver application if you qualify.
  4. Arrive 15 minutes before the appointment time, if you have an interview, as the Karachi section of the page asks.
  5. Wait for administrative processing if your officer says it is needed.
Five steps to apply for a US visa or a waiver in Pakistan

On delays, the page says most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days of the interview, and that applicants should wait at least 90 days before asking about a case.

Which office takes which category

The Islamabad embassy page says it prioritises student and exchange visitor visas, F and J. The Karachi consulate prioritises F and J and temporary employee visas, H, L, O, P, E, I, R, Q, TD and TN, and C1D. Both work by appointment only.

A matter of life or death can qualify for an expedited appointment. The page says applicants should check the strict requirements on the USTravelDocs site first.

Pakistanis living abroad can use the country of residence or nationality

The embassy notice says applicants should schedule interviews at a US embassy or consulate in their country of residence or nationality. A Pakistani worker in the Gulf is therefore not forced to fly home. They may apply in the country where they live, or in Pakistan.

Check the rules of the local US mission, and see whether Pakistan is on the US visa suspension list, because waiver rules and wait times differ by place. The embassy page also says visa fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, so pay only once you know where you will apply.

Our report on the US visa social media rule lists the categories that must also set accounts to public. A visitor visa is not on that list.

Common questions

Can I renew my US visa in Pakistan without an interview?

Only if you are a B1/B2 applicant renewing within 12 months of expiry, with a previous full validity visa issued when you were 18 or older. All other cases generally need an interview.

Do children and older adults still need an interview?

Generally yes. The embassy says that from 11 August 2025 even applicants under 14 and over 79 will generally require an in-person interview.

How long is the visa fee valid?

It is valid for 365 days from the date on the payment receipt. You must book an interview or submit a waiver application inside that period.

Can I use my fee for a different person?

No. The embassy page says visa application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

How long does administrative processing take?

Most cases are resolved within 60 days of the interview, the page says. Wait at least 90 days from the interview before asking about your case.

Who runs the appointment system?

A third party company, CGI, runs scheduling, fee collection and document delivery through the USTravelDocs site. Use only that official site and not an agent's link. Our checklist on checking a study abroad agent shows how to verify one.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read the US Embassy Islamabad nonimmigrant visas page and visa services page on 12 October 2026. We did not read the State Department's July 2025 interview waiver update, which the notice links to, or the current fee table. Waiver rules can change by notice.
