Cities with the biggest weekly rise in the open-market wheat price per 10 kg in Pakistan, week ended 8 October 2026

Punjab's wheat belt stayed cheapest. Faisalabad, Sargodha and Gujranwala are all under Rs 1,300 for 10 kg. Bahawalpur was the exception inside Punjab, up Rs 141.73 in a week.

Open-market wheat is far above last season's official price

For the crop harvested this spring, the federal government set an indicative price of Rs 3,500 per 40 kg. Open-market wheat now sells for about Rs 5,437 a maund on average, more than Rs 1,900 above that figure.

No support price has been announced yet for the crop being sown now. The detail is on our page on the wheat support price for 2026-27. On 1 October, the National Assembly's food security committee recommended a support price of Rs 5,000 per 40 kg or more, according to reports of the meeting. We could not find the committee's own record on the Assembly website, so treat that figure as reported.

The gap matters to two groups in opposite ways. Families who buy grain to grind at a local chakki pay more now. Farmers deciding how much wheat to sow see a market price well above last season's official figure.

What the rise means for a household

Some families buy wheat grain and have it ground at a chakki rather than buying a flour bag. A family using 40 kg of grain a month now pays about Rs 338 more than a week ago, on our arithmetic.

In Peshawar the same 40 kg costs Rs 6,000. In Faisalabad it costs Rs 4,800. That Rs 1,200 gap is larger than the whole week's rise in most cities.

PBS does not say why wheat rose. The federal food ministry's news page had no notice on wheat prices when we checked it on 9 October. Wheat release and flour prices are set mainly by provincial food departments, so the next move may differ by province.

How to check a fair wheat or flour price

  1. Open the latest PBS weekly SPI release and download the annex workbook.
  2. Find the wheat table, Appendix B, part E, and read the 10 kg price for your nearest city.
  3. Multiply by four to get the price per 40 kg maund.
  4. For flour, check whether your district has notified a rate. Where it has, that rate is the legal ceiling.
  5. In Punjab, report overcharging on the Qeemat Punjab app or 0800-02345, as set out in reporting overcharging in Punjab.

Farmers planning this season's crop can check the recommended wheat sowing dates and seed rates for Punjab before buying seed.
