Wheat Support Price 2026-27 Not Yet Announced in Pakistan

Wheat sowing in Punjab opens on 1 November, and the government has not yet announced a wheat support price for 2026-27. We checked the Ministry of National Food Security and Research and the Press Information Department on 26 September 2026 and found no price for the coming crop.

Farmers want one before they buy seed and fertiliser. Pakistan Kissan Ittehad, a farmers' body, is asking for Rs 5,000 per 40 kg. Last season's official figure was Rs 3,500, and it was not a classic support price.

No wheat price for 2026-27 has been announced yet

As of 26 September 2026, neither the federal food ministry nor the Punjab government has published a wheat support or indicative price for the 2026-27 crop. The ministry has said a longer wheat policy for 2026 to 2030 is being prepared, but it is not out.

We read the ministry's news list, which runs to 25 September, and the federal press releases from 1 to 26 September. None announced a wheat price. The federal minister was at FAO meetings in Rome from 21 to 25 September.

The Punjab Food Department website did not load on 26 September, so we could not check it directly. We found no Punjab announcement elsewhere.

Kissan Ittehad asks for Rs 5,000 per 40 kg

Pakistan Kissan Ittehad president Khalid Khokhar asked for a support price of Rs 5,000 per 40 kg at a press conference in Lahore on Tuesday 22 September, as reported. He warned that farmers may not sow wheat if the policy comes late.

The demand is Rs 1,500 more than last season's Rs 3,500. That is about 43 per cent higher. He also said DAP fertiliser use has fallen from 2.39 million to 1.25 million tonnes, because farmers are not recovering costs. That figure is the union's claim, not an official one.

Other farmer leaders there said the government should decide before sowing, not after. A price announced in December helps nobody who had to decide in October.

Last season's Rs 3,500 was an indicative price, not a support price

For 2025-26 the government set Rs 3,500 per 40 kg under the Interim National Wheat Policy. The food ministry calls it an "illustrative wheat procurement price", not a minimum support price. It guided official buying for reserves, for one year only.

A support price, in the old system, was a floor. The government bought wheat at that rate, so the market rarely fell far below it. That system was dropped for the 2024-25 crop under commitments made to the IMF, as widely reported, and open market prices fell well below the old rate that spring.

The interim policy brought back a government number, but in a different form. The federal cabinet approved it on 19 November 2025, according to the ministry. It removed limits on moving wheat between provinces and let each province choose its own buying model.

One fact helps the government's side. The ministry's April 2026 release put the 2025-26 crop at 29.31 million tonnes from 9.385 million hectares. Big stocks mean less pressure to announce a high price.

Punjab's recommended wheat sowing window starts on 1 November

The Wheat Research Institute, Faisalabad, part of the Punjab Agriculture Department, lists sowing times for each approved variety. Newer varieties go in from 1 or 5 November to 20 November. Several older ones can be sown until 10 December.

Barani means rain-fed land. Late sowing costs grain. Punjab's agriculture advisories, as reported last season, put the loss at roughly 15 to 20 kg per acre for each day of sowing after 20 November. So waiting for a price has a real cost too.

Farmers can prepare now without waiting for the price

Most of the work before sowing does not depend on the price. Line up seed, fertiliser and credit now, and decide how many acres to sow once a figure is out.

1. Book certified seed of a variety approved for your area, such as Arooj 2022 or Akbar 2019.
2. Check your Kisan Card balance and which dealers accept it before you buy inputs.
3. Clear the rice stubble without burning it, because Punjab fines residue burning.
4. Price DAP and urea at two or three dealers and keep the receipts.
5. Plan to sow between 1 and 20 November, and decide the acreage once the price is out.

The card works only at registered Kisan Card dealers, so find your nearest one early. The fine for crop burning in Punjab applies in the same weeks as sowing.

Punjab also runs several schemes for farmers. For machinery, the Punjab Green Tractor Scheme gives a Rs 10 lakh subsidy on a tractor to farmers picked in a digital ballot.
