Short answer: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif set the wheat price for 2027 at Rs 4,500 per 40 kg (one maund) on 23 October 2026. That is Rs 1,000 more than the Rs 3,500 fixed for the last crop. It is an "illustrative" price for the crop farmers sow this November and harvest next spring.

The Prime Minister's Office announced the figure, and Radio Pakistan, the state broadcaster, carried it the same day. We read that report and checked the federal food ministry and the Press Information Department for a written notification. Below is what the Rs 4,500 means, how it compares with today's open-market wheat price, and what a farmer should do before the sowing window opens on 1 November.

The 2027 wheat price is Rs 4,500 per 40 kg

The Prime Minister set the illustrative price of wheat at Rs 4,500 per 40 kg for 2027, an increase of Rs 1,000 on the Rs 3,500 fixed last year. He said the rise reflects higher production costs, petrol prices and inflation, and aims to get farmers to sow more wheat.

Wheat illustrative price for 2027 in Pakistan is Rs 4,500 per 40 kg, up Rs 1,000 from Rs 3,500

According to the Prime Minister's Office, he took the decision with guidance from President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, and after consulting the chief ministers of Punjab and Sindh. He said Pakistan has had to import wheat in each of the last two years, and a better price should make the country more self-reliant.

The rise is 28.6 per cent. In per kilogram terms, the price moves from Rs 87.50 to Rs 112.50. It is the first government wheat figure for the 2026-27 crop. When we checked on 26 September, no price had been announced, which we reported as the wheat support price for 2026-27 not yet announced.

An illustrative price is a guide, not a guaranteed floor

An illustrative price guides official buying and tells farmers what the government expects to pay. It is not the old minimum support price, under which the state bought all wheat offered at a fixed rate. The announcement does not say how much wheat any government will buy, or when.

Timing matters here. Farmers now know the number a week before the main sowing window opens. Farmer bodies had asked for a price before sowing, though Kissan Ittehad wanted Rs 5,000 per 40 kg, as reported in September.

Today's open-market wheat is about Rs 5,517 per 40 kg

Open-market wheat averaged Rs 1,379.15 per 10 kg across 17 cities in the week ended 22 October 2026, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. That works out to about Rs 5,516.60 per 40 kg, which is about Rs 1,017 above the new 2027 price.

Comparison of Pakistan wheat prices: Rs 3,500 last year, Rs 4,500 for 2027, Rs 5,000 demanded by farmers and about Rs 5,517 in the open market

So the new figure is below what wheat sells for today. That is not unusual in October, when old stocks are running down. What matters to a grower is the price in April and May 2027, when the new crop reaches the market. The Rs 4,500 is the government's signal for that moment, not a price you can get today. Our open-market wheat price report explains how PBS collects these figures, and the maund to flour price converter shows what each wheat price means for atta.

What wheat farmers should do before 1 November

Plan your acreage now, because the price is known and Punjab's main sowing window runs from 1 to 20 November. Book certified seed, line up fertiliser and keep records of your costs. Then watch for your province's buying plan, which will decide where and how much the government buys.

  1. Decide how many acres to put under wheat, using Rs 4,500 per 40 kg as the planning price.
  2. Book certified seed of a variety approved for your area.
  3. Buy DAP and urea early, and keep the receipts.
  4. Sow between 1 and 20 November in irrigated Punjab, or by your province's dates.
  5. Watch for your provincial food department's procurement plan and registration dates.
Five steps for wheat farmers in Pakistan before the November 2026 sowing window

A rough example shows what the Rs 1,000 rise is worth. If a field gives 40 maunds an acre, the crop is worth Rs 180,000 at the new price against Rs 140,000 at last year's. Your own yield will differ, so use your past harvests. Province by province dates and seed rates are in the guides on wheat sowing in Punjab and wheat sowing dates in Sindh.

Punjab also wants wheat on all government land

On the same day, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed officials to make sure wheat is sown on all government-owned land in the province, Radio Pakistan reported. She also ordered strict monitoring of the province's borders to stop wheat and flour being smuggled out.

This follows a run of rising flour prices. A 20 kg flour bag averaged Rs 2,976.12 across Pakistan in the week ended 22 October 2026, according to PBS, up 36.49 per cent on a year earlier. A bigger 2027 crop is the government's answer to that. Whether the Rs 4,500 is enough for farmers facing higher diesel and fertiliser bills is the question the sowing figures will answer in December.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 24 October 2026. The Rs 4,500 price, the Rs 1,000 rise and the Prime Minister's reasons come from Radio Pakistan's report of 23 October 2026, citing the Prime Minister's Office, which we read in full. The Punjab directive comes from Radio Pakistan the same day. Open-market wheat and flour prices come from the PBS price tables for the week ended 22 October 2026. Last year's Rs 3,500 is from the food ministry's February 2026 release, as read for our earlier report. The per kilo prices, the 28.6 per cent rise and the per acre example are our own arithmetic. We could not find the decision on the Prime Minister's Office or food ministry websites on 24 October, and no procurement quantity has been announced.
