A small sack of flour and a bowl of wheat on a dark table, for a guide to wheat maund price to flour price per kg

Short answer: Divide the maund price by 40 to get the price per kilogram. Wheat at Rs 5,437 a maund is Rs 136 a kilo. Divide a 20 kg flour bag price by 20 to compare it. On Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) prices for the week ended 8 October 2026, the average bag worked out to Rs 143 a kilo.

A shopkeeper in Lahore says wheat is Rs 5,200 a maund. A neighbour says atta is Rs 2,200 a bag. They are both talking about the same food in two different measures. Until you put them on one scale, you cannot tell who is charging more.

This page gives the three conversions you need: maund to kilo, bag to kilo, and grain to flour. All prices are PBS weekly averages for 8 October 2026, which we read in the weekly report. None of them is a government rate.

One maund is 40 kg, and 10 kg is the PBS unit for wheat

A maund is 40 kilograms. PBS quotes wheat grain per 10 kg, so multiply its figure by 4 to get a maund price. To get a kilo price, divide the maund price by 40, or the 10 kg price by 10.

The national average for wheat grain was Rs 1,359.15 for 10 kg on 8 October. That is Rs 5,436.60 a maund and Rs 135.92 a kilo. A week earlier it was Rs 1,274.73 for 10 kg, which is Rs 127.47 a kilo.

Cotton uses a different maund. The cotton rate sheet counts a maund as 37.324 kg, so never compare a cotton maund price with a wheat maund price without converting.

A 20 kg flour bag at Rs 2,851 is Rs 143 a kilo

Divide the bag price by 20. PBS recorded the 20 kg flour bag at an average of Rs 2,851.04 in the week ended 8 October. That is Rs 142.55 a kilo. A loose kilo of fine flour was Rs 166.25.

So the three prices for the same week line up like this. Grain was Rs 135.92 a kilo. The 20 kg bag was Rs 142.55. Fine flour bought loose was Rs 166.25. The bag, not the loose flour, is the cheaper way to buy flour.

The gap between grain and bag is Rs 6.64 a kilo on our arithmetic. That has to pay for milling, packing, transport and the seller's margin. It is small, which is one reason a flour price cannot rise much unless grain does first. Our reports on the wheat price for 8 October and the flour price for the same week give the full tables.

In Lahore and Faisalabad the bag is cheaper than the grain

In some cities the flour bag costs less per kilo than the grain. In Lahore, grain was Rs 130 a kilo while flour was Rs 111. In Faisalabad, grain was Rs 120 and flour Rs 110. In Islamabad, Karachi and Peshawar the order is normal.

CityWheat grain per kgFlour per kg, 20 kg bagBag minus grain
LahoreRs 130.00Rs 110.94Rs 19 cheaper
FaisalabadRs 120.00Rs 110.00Rs 10 cheaper
IslamabadRs 145.33Rs 168.22Rs 23 dearer
KarachiRs 141.00Rs 162.85Rs 22 dearer
PeshawarRs 150.00Rs 158.53Rs 9 dearer

The PBS figures do not say why. The Lahore flour price has not moved since mid September, and Punjab approved a Rs 10 billion flour subsidy on 10 October, as our report on the Punjab flour subsidy sets out. We cannot say that subsidy explains the Lahore gap, so treat it as a lead and not a finding.

Wheat grain price against flour price per kilogram in five Pakistani cities in October 2026

What it means for you: in Lahore and Faisalabad, buying grain and paying a chakki to grind it costs more than buying a bag. In Islamabad and Karachi the grain route can be cheaper before the grinding charge, which you must add.

How to run the check for your own city

Take the grain price your local dealer quotes, divide by 40, and compare it with your bag price divided by 20. Add the chakki's grinding charge to the grain side. The lower number is the cheaper route for that week.

  1. Write down the grain price per maund or per 10 kg.
  2. Divide a maund price by 40, or a 10 kg price by 10.
  3. Write down the bag price and divide it by 20.
  4. Add the grinding charge to the grain price per kilo.
  5. Compare the two figures and buy the lower one.
Steps to convert wheat maund price to flour price per kilogram in Pakistan

One more trap is weight. A bag labelled 20 kg should weigh 20 kg. Our guide to reporting a tampered scale explains where to complain when it does not.

What the official prices mean per kilo

The 2026 harvest indicative price of Rs 3,500 per 40 kg is Rs 87.50 a kilo. A figure of Rs 5,000 per 40 kg, which a parliamentary committee reportedly recommended on 1 October, would be Rs 125 a kilo. Neither is a market price.

The open market is now above both. That gap is why the support price for the crop being sown matters so much, and why the wheat support price for 2026-27 is still the number everybody is waiting for.

Common questions

How many kilograms are in one maund of wheat?

One maund is 40 kilograms. The cotton maund on the cotton rate sheet is 37.324 kg, so do not mix them.

How do I convert a maund price to a price per kilo?

Divide the maund price by 40. For Rs 5,437 a maund that gives Rs 135.92 a kilo.

What is the flour price per kilo if a 20 kg bag costs Rs 2,851?

Divide by 20. That is Rs 142.55 a kilo, which was the national PBS average in the week ended 8 October 2026.

Why is flour cheaper than wheat in Lahore?

PBS does not say. The Lahore bag price has been steady since mid September, while open-market grain moved up. We do not know the cause.

Is the PBS price the price I will pay?

No. It is a weekly average across markets in each city. Your shop can charge more or less.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics weekly price report and city annexes for the week ended 8 October 2026, from the PBS site at pbs.gov.pk, in the notes of our earlier price reports on 9 October, and re-did the arithmetic on 12 October 2026. The next PBS weekly report is due on Friday 16 October. Check it before you decide.
