How Pakistanis on a Canada Work Permit Can Study 6 Months Without a Study Permit
Canada lets some work permit holders study up to 6 months without a study permit until 31 December 2027. See who is covered, how to check and the limits.
If you already hold a Canadian work permit, you may be able to study for up to 6 months without a study permit. Canada's immigration department announced the temporary measure on 9 September 2026. It runs until 31 December 2027 or until your work permit ends, whichever comes first. You do not apply for it. The department says it began notifying eligible workers directly.
For Pakistanis already working in Canada, this removes one form from a short course. It does not help anyone abroad. This guide explains who it is for, how to check your own position and where it stops.
Canada now lets some work permit holders study without a study permit
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says eligible work permit holders already in Canada can take short studies of up to 6 months without applying for a study permit. The measure is temporary and ends on 31 December 2027.
IRCC gave the reason in its own notice: Canada has labour gaps in key sectors, and workers can build skills while they keep working. It named tradespeople, nurses and laboratory technicians as examples of the workers it has in mind.
Before this change, a worker who wanted a short licensing course or training programme could need a study permit first. That meant a separate application, a fee and a wait. The new measure removes that step for the short courses it covers.
Who the measure covers and who it leaves out
It covers eligible work permit holders who are already in Canada. It does not cover people outside Canada, visitors, or students. IRCC states plainly that this is not a new pathway for workers to come to Canada.
We could not read a full list of the permit types that count as eligible. The notice gives trades, nursing and laboratory work as examples, and says IRCC began notifying eligible permit holders directly. Treat that notice as the test. If you have not been told, do not assume you qualify.

Canada's wider aim has not changed. The same notice repeats the government's goal of bringing temporary residents below 5 per cent of the population by the end of 2027. So this is a narrow exception, not a general opening.
Check your eligibility before you enrol
Do the checks below before you pay for any course. A wrong guess can leave you studying without permission, which can put your work permit at risk.
- Log in to your IRCC account and read your messages and email for a notice about the study measure.
- Open the IRCC notice dated 9 September 2026 on canada.ca and read it in full.
- Check the end date on your work permit. The 6 months stop when the permit ends.
- Ask the college or training body for the course length in months and whether it is part time.
- If anything is unclear, write to IRCC through your account and keep the reply.
Keep your own records too. Save the IRCC message, the course offer and the fee receipt in one folder. If a later application asks what you did while in Canada, you can show it quickly.
Know the limits on time and study type
The limit is 6 months of study, or the end of your permit, whichever is first. The measure is for short opportunities such as licensing, education or training. IRCC says full-time studies still need a study permit.
That wording matters for courses that run longer than 6 months. A one year diploma is not covered. A three month trade licence preparation course may be. Do not try to split a long programme into two short blocks to fit inside the rule. That is the kind of move that causes refusals later.

Do not pay anyone who sells this as a route into Canada
This measure helps only people already in Canada with a valid work permit. Any agent in Pakistan who promises a "6 month study visa" or a job plus study package on this basis is not describing the rule correctly.

Common questions about studying on a Canadian work permit
Can I use this measure if I am still in Pakistan?
No. It applies only to eligible work permit holders already in Canada. Someone outside Canada who wants to study needs a study permit or another visa.
Do I have to pay a fee or fill in a form?
IRCC says no application is needed. It says it began notifying eligible permit holders. We did not see any fee mentioned in the notice.
What if my course is longer than 6 months?
Then the measure does not cover the whole course. Full-time study still needs a study permit, so apply for one before you start.
Does the 6 months continue after my work permit ends?
No. IRCC says the measure lasts for up to 6 months or until the permit ends, whichever comes first.
Will this lead to permanent residence?
IRCC makes no such promise in the notice. It is a skills measure for workers already in Canada, not a pathway.
