Short answer: SBP says any subscription a bank sells, such as SMS alerts or credit shield insurance, must come with a free look period of at least 15 days. Cancel within it and the bank must reverse the fee within five working days of your request. Ask in writing and keep the reference number.

A small charge appears each month. It is a few rupees for SMS alerts, or a larger line for insurance you do not remember agreeing to. It is easy to miss and easy to ignore. SBP's rules say you can cancel it, and you can get the money back.

We read the State Bank of Pakistan's Business Conduct and Fair Treatment of Consumers Regulatory Framework on 11 October 2026. This guide covers the cancellation rights in section 3.1 and 2.3, and shows how to use them.

Every bank subscription has a 15 day free look

Section 3.1.2 says any facility offered on a subscription basis, such as SMS alert or credit shield, must have a free look period of at least 15 days. If you opt out within it, the bank must reverse any fee recovered within five working days of your request.

The rule covers the bank's own services and those of a third party sold through the bank. The framework adds that banks must provide a way to opt out or register dissent in that window. A footnote says the rule applies to every kind of subscription based product or service.

SBP rules on bank subscriptions: 15 day free look, refund in 5 working days, 30 day notice of changes

Section 3.1.1 says banks shall not bundle products or services unless you request it or give explicit, verifiable consent. If a bundle is allowed, each part must have its own disclosure. Banks may not bundle their products with a third party's, such as bancassurance.

That is the rule to quote when an insurance charge appears next to a loan or card you took. If you never gave verifiable consent, ask the bank for the record. The bank must keep the call recording for at least a year, and a call back confirmation must follow in 24 hours to 3 days when a product is converted.

A change in charges lets you leave without a penalty

Banks must give at least 30 days' notice of a change in terms, profit or charges. Section 3.1.2 says you may exit without penalty if you act within that notice period. If you do not reply in time, the notice counts as implied consent.

Read notices when they arrive. SBP says banks must send notice by a mode you agreed, and also display it in branches, on the website and in app notifications. Keep app notifications switched on, and review your SMS and alert charges from time to time.

How to cancel a subscription and claim the refund

Find the line item on your statement, call or write to the bank, ask to cancel, and request a reversal if you are within 15 days. Get a reference number and keep it. If the bank does not confirm in writing, escalate.

  1. Open your statement and note the name, date and amount of the recurring charge.
  2. Ask the bank in writing to cancel the service. State the date you first saw the charge or signed up.
  3. If you are within 15 days of sign up, ask for a reversal within five working days.
  4. Ask for a written or SMS confirmation of cancellation. The bank must confirm termination within 2 working days.
  5. If the bank refuses, file a complaint on the SBP Sunwai portal.

Auto renewals need a fresh mandate

For auto renewals, subscriptions and direct debits, banks must set up a way to get a fresh mandate from you after a set period. A standing instruction cannot run unchecked for years. If you see a direct debit you do not recognise, ask the bank when you last gave consent.

This also applies to bank account fees you did not expect. For fees on the account itself, see what SBP says about minimum balance and account charges. For the cost of a card, debit card annual fees by bank lists what banks quote.

Common questions

How long do I have to cancel a bank subscription for a refund?

At least 15 days from sign up, according to SBP's framework. Within that period the bank must let you opt out and must reverse any fee recovered within five working days of your request.

Does the rule cover SMS alert charges?

Yes. SBP names SMS alert as an example of a subscription facility. Free alerts for transactions are a separate rule, and banks must send alerts for each debit or credit.

Can a bank sell me insurance with my loan without asking?

Not without your explicit, verifiable consent. SBP says bundling needs your request or verifiable consent, and bundling with a third party's product such as bancassurance is prohibited. Insurance must be disclosed as a condition or an option.

What if the bank raises a charge without telling me?

It must give at least 30 days' notice, by a mode you agreed to. Exceptions apply where a law or SBP instruction forces the change, in which case notice is immediate. Raise a missing notice in your complaint.

Will the bank confirm that my subscription has ended?

It must. On termination of a contract, the bank must confirm to you within 2 working days that it has executed the termination. Ask for it in writing or by SMS.

Where do I complain if the bank refuses a refund?

Start with the bank's complaint unit and get a tracking number. Then use SBP Sunwai. The Banking Mohtasib is the next forum if the reply is unsatisfactory.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read SBP's BPRD Circular No. 04 of 2025 and the framework, sections 2.3, 3.1 and 5.1, on sbp.org.pk on 11 October 2026. We did not test any bank's cancellation process. Confirm timings and forms with your own bank.
