Short answer: To check a Foreign Office statement, open mofa.gov.pk, go to Press Releases, and find the same title and date. Real releases carry a dateline and a serial number such as 283/2026 for 9 October 2026. If you cannot find the statement there, or on the ministry's own social accounts, treat the screenshot as unverified.

A screenshot of a "Foreign Office statement" lands in a family group at night. It says Pakistan has shut a border, summoned an ambassador or banned a flight route. It has a letterhead and a stamp. Within an hour it has been forwarded forty times. In a crisis month with a border closed, Saudi Arabia under attack and the US and Iran in talks, these images move fast.

On 12 October 2026 we opened the ministry's website and read its latest press releases, then checked how a real one is built. Here is the five-step method, and the one thing it cannot do.

Start on the ministry's own website

The only reliable source is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, mofa.gov.pk. Its menu has a Press Releases section with sub-pages for Media Briefings, Statements and Speeches. Real releases are posted there with a title and a date.

Type the address yourself. Do not click a link inside the forwarded message. The correct domain ends in .gov.pk and reads mofa.gov.pk with nothing before or after it. A look-alike address that adds words or changes the ending is not the ministry.

The site can be slow. In our checks on 12 October the pages timed out several times before loading. A slow site is not proof of a fake. Retry later, or use the ministry's official social accounts, which the site links from its header.

Where to lookWhat you will find
Press ReleasesStatements, curtain raisers, visit summaries
Media BriefingsFull transcripts of the spokesperson's weekly briefings
StatementsShort statements by the spokesperson
SpeechesRemarks by the Foreign Minister and others
Official social accountsLinked from the website header: X, Facebook and YouTube

Match the title, date and serial number

Real releases end with a place, a date and a serial number. The release on the IAEA nuclear security mission, dated 9 October 2026, ends "Islamabad, October 9, 2026" and the number 283/2026. The release on the UN Secretary-General's visit, dated 8 October, carries 282/2026.

The numbers run in order through the year. A release dated 27 September carried 268/2026. So about fifteen releases were issued in twelve days. A forwarded image that shows a number far outside the run for its date is a warning sign. A number that cannot be matched to a posted release is a stronger one.

Check three things together: the exact headline, the date, and the number.

Read the transcript if it claims a quote

Many viral posts claim "the spokesperson said" something. The ministry posts the full transcript of each weekly briefing. Recent ones are for Thursday 1 October and Friday 9 October 2026. Search the transcript for the key words from the post.

The transcripts are long, so use your browser's find function. If the quote is not in the transcript of that date, it was not said at that briefing. Note that a spokesperson can also give answers at other events, so a missing quote is a strong hint, not final proof.

Watch for short clips cut out of context. In the 1 October briefing the spokesperson himself said a remark attributed to the ministry about Iran trade had been "taken out of context." Real statements get clipped too, so read the full answer.

Follow five steps before you forward

  1. Do not tap links inside the message. Type mofa.gov.pk yourself.
  2. Open Press Releases and look for the same headline and date.
  3. Compare the serial number with releases dated the same week.
  4. For a quote, search the weekly briefing transcript.
  5. If you cannot match it, say "unverified" and do not forward it.

What these checks cannot prove

A match proves the statement was issued. It does not prove the claim in it is true. A release is the ministry's own position, and other governments may say the opposite. Our report on the Foreign Office on overseas protesters is an example of a statement we report as the ministry's position.

No match also does not mean fake in every case. A statement can be posted late, or on a different page, such as a speech. Give it a few hours before you decide.

Finally, a foreign government's or an embassy's statement is not on this site. Look for those on that country's own official pages.

Common questions

What is the official Foreign Office website?

It is mofa.gov.pk. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs posts press releases, briefing transcripts, statements and speeches there.

Do real Foreign Office releases have numbers?

Yes. The releases we read end with a place, a date and a serial number, for example 283/2026 for 9 October 2026 and 282/2026 for 8 October 2026.

How often does the spokesperson brief the media?

Weekly. The latest transcripts on the site are for Thursday 1 October and Friday 9 October 2026.

Where are the official social accounts?

The ministry's website header links to its X, Facebook and YouTube accounts. Use those links from mofa.gov.pk rather than searching by name.

Is a missing statement always fake?

No. Wait a few hours and check the Statements and Speeches pages too. A real release can be posted late.

Does a real statement mean the claim is true?

No. It means the ministry issued it. It is the ministry's own position and other governments may differ.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We opened the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, its press releases page and the releases dated 8 and 9 October 2026 on 12 October 2026. The site layout may change, so confirm the menu names when you visit.
