Short answer: On the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) weekly price sheet for the week ended 8 October 2026, a 1 kg pouch of vegetable ghee averaged Rs 612.71 across 17 cities, a 2.5 kg ghee tin Rs 1,571.29 and a 5 litre cooking oil tin Rs 3,089.92. All three are 6 to 8 per cent dearer than a year ago.

Ghee and cooking oil are bought every month, so a shopkeeper's price matters. PBS publishes a price for each every week. This guide shows the numbers and how to use them at the shop.

We read PBS's city annex for the Weekly Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ended 8 October 2026 on 13 October. PBS lists these items by product type. We leave out brand names. The figures are average market prices, not legal rates.

Ghee and cooking oil are 6 to 8 per cent dearer than a year ago

The national average for a 5 litre cooking oil tin was Rs 3,089.92. A year earlier it was Rs 2,872.29. That is Rs 217.63 more, or 7.58 per cent. A 2.5 kg ghee tin rose from Rs 1,469.66 to Rs 1,571.29, up 6.92 per cent. A 1 kg ghee pouch rose from Rs 575.42 to Rs 612.71, up 6.48 per cent.

None of the three changed in the last week. PBS shows a weekly change of 0.00 per cent for each. Mustard oil moved a little, to Rs 567.88 a kilo, up 0.21 per cent on the week before and 5.67 per cent on the year.

The city gap is small, so an outlier stands out

Ghee and oil prices are almost the same across cities. A 1 kg ghee pouch ranges from Rs 590 to Rs 615 in the sheet, with a top of Rs 615. A 2.5 kg tin ranges from Rs 1,500 to Rs 1,580. A 5 litre oil tin ranges from Rs 3,065 to Rs 3,110.

Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta all show Rs 615 for the pouch and Rs 3,090 for the oil tin. So a shop charging well above these figures is above every market PBS sampled. That does not prove an offence, but it is worth asking about.

What a month of ghee costs now

For a family using 2 kg of ghee pouches a month, the cost is Rs 1,225.42 at the PBS average. A year ago the same two pouches cost Rs 1,150.84. The difference is Rs 74.58 a month, or about Rs 895 over a year. A household that buys one 5 litre oil tin a month pays Rs 217.63 more than it did a year ago, which is about Rs 2,612 over twelve months. These are our sums from the PBS averages, so your own bill depends on the brand and pack you choose.

Check the shop price in four steps

  1. Note the product type and pack size on the shelf price tag.
  2. Open PBS's weekly SPI release page and the "Annex" PDF. Find the matching line, such as "Vegetable Ghee, 1 kg pouch".
  3. Read the AVG and MAX columns for your city.
  4. If the shelf price is above MAX, ask the shop why and ask for a receipt.

The tax floor for these goods is covered in the report on how FBR sets a minimum sales tax value for ghee and cooking oil. The weekly picture for all 51 items is in the note on weekly inflation of 8 October.

If a shop charges above the official rate

PBS averages are not legal rates, so a higher price is not always a breach. If an official price notice exists in your province and a shop ignores it, you can complain. In Punjab, see how to report overcharging in Punjab. In Sindh, see how to report overcharging in Karachi and Sindh.
