How to Claim for Delayed or Damaged Baggage on Emirates: PIR and 21 Day Rule
Claim for delayed or damaged Emirates baggage: get a PIR number at the airport, track the bag online, fill the inventory form once, and claim within 21 days.

Short answer: If Emirates delays or damages your bag, report it at the airport to get a PIR reference number, then track it online with your last name. Contact Emirates within 21 days of getting a delayed bag back and attach receipts for essentials you had to buy.
A bag that does not come round the belt ruins the first day of a trip. For Pakistani travellers it can also mean a wedding outfit, medicine or gifts that cannot be replaced. We read the Emirates Pakistan page on delayed or damaged baggage on 14 October 2026. This guide turns it into a checklist you can follow at the carousel.
Report the problem before you leave the airport
Go to the baggage desk in the arrivals hall and register the missing or damaged bag. Emirates sends you a file reference number, called a PIR, and everything else, including tracking and compensation, uses that number.
Emirates says that in some countries local law means it cannot clear delayed baggage through customs for you. Airport staff will tell you if you have to collect it yourself. If you land in Pakistan, our general page on how to claim lost or damaged baggage at a Pakistani airport explains the local desk and papers.
Track the bag with your PIR number
Emirates has a delayed or damaged baggage tracker on its website. Enter your last name and the PIR number. The Emirates app also has a baggage tracker under notifications and My Trips.
The app shows a bag from check-in to loading, transfer and arrival on nearly all routes. If your bag is delayed, you automatically receive a PIR and can track the status. Keep the PIR safe, because the compensation form asks for it.

Fill in the Baggage Inventory Form with care
When baggage is delayed, Emirates starts tracing it and may ask you for documents. You complete a Baggage Inventory Form (BIF) that lists the contents of the bag. Emirates warns that once the form is submitted it cannot be edited or sent again.
So prepare the list first. Write the main items, their colours and brands, and any items of value. Use the last name and the PIR to open the form.
- Get the PIR at the airport and photograph the bag tag and the report.
- Write a full list of what was inside, with colours and brands.
- Open the Emirates form with your last name and PIR number.
- Check each line, because the form cannot be edited after you submit it.
- Upload receipts and photos. The form takes up to two documents of 7 MB each, and an Add Field option for more.

Claim within 21 days of getting your bag back
If your checked baggage was delayed, you may be eligible for compensation. Emirates asks you to contact it within 21 days of receiving the bag, with receipts for essential clothing or toiletries you bought during the delay.
| Situation | What Emirates says |
|---|---|
| Bag delayed | You may be eligible for compensation; contact Emirates within 21 days of receiving it, with receipts |
| Bag declared lost | Emirates reaches out to you to arrange compensation |
| Tracing time | Can take up to 21 days, because several airlines or airports may be involved |
| Flight shared with another airline | The airline on the final sector of the journey handles the claim |
We did not find a fixed amount on the page. Compensation also depends on the international rules that apply to your flight, so do not assume a number. Our page on how to claim travel insurance in Pakistan covers a second route if your policy includes baggage cover.
Use the final airline for mixed tickets
Emirates says that when your bag goes missing on a trip with more than one airline, the airline on the final sector processes the baggage claim. This applies even if your ticket was an Emirates ticket.
That matters on a Karachi to Dubai to Toronto journey with a partner airline on the last leg. Ask where to file before you leave the arrivals hall, and keep every boarding pass.
Pack so a delay hurts less
Put medicine, one change of clothes, chargers, travel papers and valuables in your cabin bag, so a late checked bag costs you little. A late checked bag then costs you little.
Photograph your checked bag and its tag before you hand it over. A photo helps staff find it, and it helps you describe it on the inventory form. Keep the baggage tag stub that the agent sticks to your boarding pass until the bag is in your hands.

How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
