To dry clothes indoors in a Pakistani winter without the damp smell, spin them twice, hang them with a hand's width of space between each piece, and keep air moving with a fan or an open window. Most loads dry in 12 to 24 hours this way. Never dry clothes on or right next to a gas heater.
From late November, the roof stops working as a dryer. Fog sits over Punjab for days, smog leaves a burnt smell on anything hung outside, and clothes that stay damp overnight start to smell sour. Most homes have no tumble dryer, so the drying has to happen inside.
Here is how to dry a load quickly indoors, which room to use, how to stop the smell, and when it is worth hanging outside after all.

Spin harder and hang wider
The less water left in the clothes, the faster they dry. Run an extra spin, or the highest spin the fabric label allows. Then hang each piece with space around it, because clothes pressed together trap damp air and that is where the smell starts.
Follow these steps for every indoor load:
- Wash smaller loads in winter, so the machine rinses and spins properly.
- Run one extra spin on cotton, towels and jeans.
- Shake each piece out hard before hanging. It removes creases and speeds drying.
- Hang shirts and kameez on hangers, not folded over a line.
- Leave a hand's width of space between pieces.
- Turn thick items such as jeans and hoodies inside out after six hours.
- Fold and put away only when fully dry, including seams and pockets.
Pick the right room and keep air moving
Moving air matters more than heat. A room with a window you can open a little and a ceiling or pedestal fan dries clothes faster than a warm closed room. Avoid bedrooms where people sleep, since wet clothes add damp to the air you breathe all night.
| Place | Good or bad | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Room with fan and open window | Best | Moving air carries the damp out |
| Covered veranda or balcony | Good | Air without fog or rain on the clothes |
| Bathroom with exhaust fan | Good for small loads | Damp goes out through the fan |
| Closed bedroom | Bad | Damp builds up, mould on walls |
| On or near a gas heater | Never | Fire risk and gas fumes |
An electric oil heater in a ventilated room speeds things up, but it costs units. Our page on electric heater cost per hour shows what that adds to the bill. A fan uses far less.
Stop the sour smell before it starts
The sour smell comes from bacteria that grow when clothes stay damp too long. Dry them within a day and it never starts. Use the right amount of detergent, since too much leaves a film that holds damp, and clean the machine once a month.

- Take clothes out of the machine as soon as it stops.
- Add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse for towels that smell.
- Run an empty hot wash with a cup of vinegar once a month to clean the drum.
- Leave the machine door open after use so the drum dries.
- Wash again any piece that still smells, rather than spraying perfume on it.
Woollens need different care: dry them flat on a towel, never on a hanger. Our guide to washing wool and cashmere at home explains why.
When to hang clothes outside in fog and smog
On a smog day, outdoor drying leaves a smoky smell and can add fine dust to the fabric. Check the air quality first. If the AQI is very high, dry inside. On a clear, sunny afternoon, two or three hours outside still beat a full day indoors.
Bring clothes in before sunset, because evening fog makes them damp again. Punjab publishes daily air quality readings, and our Punjab AQI report for 7 November shows how bad recent days have been.
Fast fixes when you need it dry tomorrow
For a school uniform or an office shirt needed in the morning, roll it in a dry towel and press hard to squeeze out water, then hang it under a fan. An iron on the right setting finishes off a nearly dry cotton shirt, and the steam also kills smells.

Never iron a shirt that is still wet through, as it can leave water marks, and never put clothes in the oven or the microwave. Our care label chart shows the iron setting for each fabric.
Common questions
How long do clothes take to dry indoors in winter?
Usually 12 to 24 hours with a fan and an open window. Thick items such as jeans and towels can take longer.
Why do clothes dried indoors smell bad?
They stayed damp for too long and bacteria grew. Spin them more, hang them with space, and keep air moving.
Is it safe to dry clothes near a gas heater?
No. Clothes can catch fire and gas heaters need fresh air. Dry clothes in another room with a fan.
Should I dry clothes outside on a smog day?
It is better to dry them inside when the AQI is very high. Smog leaves a smoky smell and fine dust on fabric.
Does vinegar remove the damp smell from towels?
Yes, half a cup of white vinegar in the rinse helps remove the sour smell. Do not mix it with bleach.
How can I dry a school uniform overnight?
Spin it twice, roll it in a dry towel to press out water, hang it under a fan, and iron it in the morning.
