You can ask the Supreme Court of Pakistan to review its own judgment by filing a review petition under Article 188, and you must deposit a cash security of Rs 10,000. The receipt goes with the petition. If the review is decided against you, the court says no further remedy is available.

We read the Supreme Court's Frequently Asked Questions page on 11 October 2026. This guide follows its answers on review, the security refund, the court fee and what to do when someone ignores a Supreme Court order.

A review petition is for the court's own judgment or order

A review is not an appeal. You file it in the same court that gave the judgment and ask it to look again. The court's FAQ says a party who is hurt by a judgment or order of the Supreme Court can file a review petition under Article 188 of the Constitution, read with Order XXVI of the Supreme Court Rules, 1980.

If your case is still in a High Court, you are looking for something else. The Supreme Court appeal time limits show the routes from a High Court order.

The Rs 10,000 cash security goes to the Federal Treasury

The court says a cash security of Rs 10,000 must be deposited in the Federal Treasury. The treasury receipt must be attached to the review petition. Without it, the petition does not meet the court's rule.

The court's page does not say how you pay in the treasury. Ask the Supreme Court's information desk or your Advocate-on-Record, the lawyer enrolled with the court, before you go to a bank.

Review petition costs in the Supreme Court of Pakistan: Rs 10,000 security and half the original fee

The court fee is half of the original fee

The court's fee table has a line for an application for review of a judgment or order. The fee is half of the fee paid on the original proceedings. A petition for leave to appeal costs Rs 250, so a review of that stage would cost half of that. Your lawyer can work out the exact figure for your case.

The court lists other small charges too. An application costs Rs 5. An entry of appearance costs Rs 2. A certified copy of a judgment costs Rs 5 in stamps, plus folio charges.

Who gets the Rs 10,000 back

The FAQ is clear on this. The security is refunded to the petitioner if the review petition is allowed. It is refunded to the respondent if the respondent contested the review and it is dismissed. If neither happens, the court's page lists no refund.

In both cases, the court says an application is required. Nobody gets the money back automatically. File the refund application after the decision, and keep the treasury receipt safe until then.

File a review petition in five steps

  1. Get the judgment or order you want reviewed, and read what the court decided and why.
  2. Meet an Advocate-on-Record or an advocate of the Supreme Court. The court says a party can also file in person.
  3. Deposit Rs 10,000 in the Federal Treasury and keep the receipt.
  4. Prepare the review petition under Order XXVI of the Supreme Court Rules, with the receipt attached, and pay the court fee.
  5. File it at the Principal Seat in Islamabad or at a branch registry, then track the case.

To follow the case after filing, checking a court case status online shows what to search. The court also runs a public facilitation portal for early hearing and video link requests.

A review is a last chance, so write it carefully

The FAQ answers a direct question here. After a review petition is decided, does the party have any other remedy before this court? The court's answer is that no such remedy is available. That is a strong reason to get the petition drafted by a lawyer and not to rush it.

The page does not say what grounds the court accepts for review, and it does not give a time limit for filing. We did not read Order XXVI. Do not assume you have unlimited time.

Contempt is a different petition

If someone does not obey a Supreme Court order, a review is the wrong tool. The court's FAQ says the hurt party can file a criminal original petition under Article 204 of the Constitution, read with the Contempt of Court Ordinance, 2003. The page states no time limit for it. This is the contempt petition people talk about on the news.

Common questions

How much is the security for a Supreme Court review petition?

It is Rs 10,000, deposited in the Federal Treasury, with the receipt attached to the petition.

Can I get the Rs 10,000 back?

Yes, in two cases. The petitioner gets it back if the review is allowed. The respondent gets it back if he contested and the review is dismissed. Both need an application.

Can I appeal again after a review is dismissed?

The court says no. No other remedy is available before it after a review petition is decided.

Do I need a lawyer for a review petition?

The court says a party can file petitions in person, and an Advocate-on-Record can also file for you. A review is a final step, so most people use a lawyer.

Is there a time limit for a review petition?

The court's FAQ page gives none. Ask a lawyer, and file as early as you can.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 11 October 2026. We read the Supreme Court of Pakistan's Frequently Asked Questions page, questions 8, 9, 14 to 16, 18, 23 and 33, on supremecourt.gov.pk. We did not read Order XXVI of the Supreme Court Rules, 1980. The page gives no review time limit and no list of grounds. Check the court's own page and a lawyer before you file.
