Every candidate for an FPSC post gets 5 extra years on the upper age limit. On top of that, you can claim one more relaxation if you fit a category: 3 years for some regions and communities, 10 years for serving government employees, up to 15 years for retired armed forces personnel, or 5 years for the family of a federal employee who died in service.

Age is one of the commonest reasons FPSC rejects people, and it often happens after they have passed the test. FPSC's General Instructions, updated on 12 August 2026, list "Underage/ Overage" and "No proof of age" among the main grounds for rejection. We read those instructions and an Establishment Division office memo on the 5-year rule to set out exactly what you can claim and how to prove it.

FPSC age relaxation categories: 3, 10, 15 and 5 years, plus 5 years for everyone

The 5-year general age relaxation applies to everyone

The upper age limit in a post's recruitment rules is raised by 5 years for every candidate. FPSC calls it "5 years general age relaxation over and above any one of the above age relaxations". You do not apply for it. It is automatic.

The rule comes from the Initial Appointment to Civil Posts (Relaxation of Upper Age Limit) Rules, 1993. In a memo dated 24 June 2010, the Establishment Division told federal ministries to show the 5 years in their adverts. It asked them to add the 5 years into the maximum age printed in the advertisement, so readers are not misled.

So read the age line in the advert carefully. Some adverts print the limit with the 5 years already added. Others state the base limit and mention the relaxation separately. If the advert is unclear, read the post's recruitment rules or ask FPSC before you pay the fee.

FPSC age relaxation categories and how many years each gives

FPSC's instructions list four categories. You can use only one of them, plus the general 5 years. If you fit two categories, pick the one that gives more years and send proof for it with your application.

CategoryExtra yearsProof FPSC asks for
Everyone5 yearsNone, it is automatic
Scheduled Castes, Buddhist community, recognised tribes of the Tribal Areas, Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan3 yearsCertificate from the Political Agent or the District Coordination Officer of the area
Serving government employees, including contract staff, with 2 years of continuous service10 years, up to age 55Service record and Departmental Permission Certificate
Retired or released armed forces officers and personnel15 years, or the years actually served if fewerDischarge or service papers
Widow, son or daughter of a federal civil servant who died in service5 yearsProof of the death in service and the relationship

The 3-year concession is only for permanent residents of those areas. Living in Gilgit for work does not count. You must belong there and have the certificate to show it.

The proof listed for the last three rows is our reading of what will settle the claim. FPSC's instructions say only that "adequate proof" must come with the application.

Serving government employees get the biggest relaxation

A government servant, including a contract employee, gets 10 extra years if they have 2 years of continuous government service on the closing date. The age cannot go past 55. Staff of banks, SBP, WAPDA and autonomous bodies do not qualify.

The exact words leave out employees of "the Nationalized Banks, State Bank of Pakistan, WAPDA, other Semi-Government and Autonomous Bodies". So a clerk in a federal ministry qualifies. A clerk in a state-owned bank does not.

Serving employees also need permission. Under the Government Servants (Applications for Services and Posts) Rules, 1966, you must get your department's permission before you apply. You enter the reference number and date of that Departmental Permission Certificate in the online form. Without it, FPSC says no admission certificate will be issued.

Work out your FPSC age on the closing date

FPSC counts your age on the closing date of the advertisement, not on the test date. It takes your date of birth from your Matric or O-Level certificate. Add the relaxations to the post's upper limit, then compare with your age on that day.

  1. Find the post's upper age limit in the advertisement or recruitment rules.
  2. Check whether the 5 general years are already included. If not, add them.
  3. Add one category relaxation if you qualify, such as 10 years for a serving employee.
  4. Work out your age on the closing date, using the date of birth on your Matric certificate.
  5. Apply only if you are within the limit. Otherwise the fee and the test are wasted.

Here is an example. A post's recruitment rules set 30 as the upper limit. With the general 5 years, anyone up to 35 can apply. A federal ministry clerk with 3 years of service gets 10 more, so she can apply up to 45. A man of 37 with no category cannot.

If your O-Level certificate has no date of birth, FPSC accepts your school leaving certificate together with a birth certificate from a hospital or municipal committee.

When FPSC age relaxation does not apply

The 1993 relaxation rules do not cover posts filled through the annual competitive examination, which is CSS. CSS has its own age rules. Departments recruiting for lower grades may also list extra categories that FPSC adverts do not.

The Establishment Division memo says the relaxations in the 1993 Rules do not apply to recruitment through the annual competitive examination. So for CSS, read the CSS 2027 rules and schedule rather than this table.

The same memo lists two more groups for posts in lower grades. Candidates from Sindh (Rural) and Balochistan get 3 years for federal posts in BPS-15 and below. Disabled persons are also listed. FPSC recruits for BS-16 and above, so these matter mainly for jobs that departments advertise themselves. The disabled persons employment quota is a separate right from age relaxation.

Beyond these, the memo says the President or Prime Minister may grant age relaxation to an individual on "extreme compassionate grounds". That is rare and personal. Do not plan around it.

Common questions

Is the 5-year age relaxation available to everyone in FPSC jobs?

Yes. FPSC's instructions give 5 years of general relaxation to every candidate, over and above any one category relaxation.

Can I claim two age relaxations together?

Only one category, plus the general 5 years. If you fit two categories, FPSC allows relaxation in one category only.

On which date is my age counted for an FPSC job?

On the closing date for applications in the advertisement. FPSC uses the date of birth on your Matric or O-Level certificate.

Do WAPDA or bank employees get the 10-year relaxation?

No. Employees of nationalised banks, the State Bank, WAPDA, semi-government and autonomous bodies are excluded from it.

Does age relaxation apply to CSS?

No. The Establishment Division says the 1993 relaxation rules do not apply to posts filled through the annual competitive examination.

What happens if I apply while overage?

FPSC may still let you sit the test, but it checks age afterwards. If you were overage on the closing date, you are rejected, even after passing.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 2 October 2026. We read paragraph 8(B) on date of birth and age relaxation, 8(D) on departmental permission and paragraph 9 on rejection in the FPSC General Instructions updated on 12 August 2026. We also read the Establishment Division office memo No. 9/2/91-R-5 dated 24 June 2010 on the 5-year general relaxation, on establishment.gov.pk. That memo is a scanned copy and parts are hard to read, so we use it only for the points stated clearly. Its table of age limits by pay scale was not clear enough to quote. The proof column for the last three categories is our guidance; FPSC asks only for "adequate proof".
