When Gemini says you have reached your limit, wait: Google says the limit refreshes every 5 hours, until you hit a separate weekly limit. You can see exactly where you stand at gemini.google.com under Settings, then Usage Limits. Paid plans raise the ceiling: Google AI Plus doubles the free limit, AI Pro gives four times, and Ultra goes higher still.

The message usually lands at the worst moment, halfway through an assignment or a long report. Below is how the five hour and weekly limits work, what each plan gets in Pakistan, what stays free, and four ways to keep working while you wait. We read Google's Gemini limits page on 27 October 2026.

Gemini's limit resets every five hours, with a weekly cap on top

Google's help page says your Gemini limit "refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit". So a limit hit at 4 pm clears at about 9 pm. If you have also used your weekly allowance, you must wait for that to reset or upgrade.

The weekly cap is the one that surprises heavy users. A student who uses Gemini for hours every day before exams can run through a week's allowance in three or four days. Google does not publish the exact number of prompts in either window, so check your own usage page rather than guessing.

Each Google AI plan multiplies the free limit

Google sets the free account at standard limits with a 32,000 token context window. AI Plus gets twice the standard limit, AI Pro four times, and Ultra five or twenty times the AI Pro limit, depending on the subscription. All three paid plans are sold in Pakistan.

PlanUsage limitContext windowVideo generation
No plan (free)Standard32,000 tokensNo
Google AI Plus2 times standard128,000 tokensYes
Google AI Pro4 times standard1 million tokensYes
Google AI Ultra5 or 20 times AI Pro1 million tokensYes

A context window is how much text Gemini can hold in mind at once, counted in tokens, small pieces of words. A 32,000 token window holds roughly a long chapter. Paste a whole thesis into free Gemini and it will lose the start.

Pakistan appears on Google's lists for both Google AI Plus and Google AI Pro and Ultra. When we last checked Google's Pakistan prices, AI Plus cost Rs 1,400 a month and AI Pro Rs 5,600 a month with 5 TB of storage, as set out in Google One prices in Pakistan.

You can check your Gemini usage in four steps

Open gemini.google.com in a browser, click Settings at the bottom left, then choose Usage Limits. The page shows how much you have used and when it resets. Do this before a long task, not in the middle of one.

  1. Open gemini.google.com on a computer or in your phone's browser.
  2. Sign in with the Google account you use for Gemini.
  3. Click Settings at the bottom left of the screen.
  4. Select Usage Limits to see your current use and reset time.

If you share one Google account across the family, everyone's prompts count against the same limit. A separate Google account for each student is free and avoids the fight.

Free Gemini still includes Deep Research, Canvas and images

Google's plan table shows Canvas, Deep Research, Nano Banana 2 images, audio overviews, slides, quizzes and music generation on the free plan, within limits. Video generation, scheduled actions and the daily brief need a paid plan.

There is a catch for free users. Google says that during high demand, people without a plan may lose access to compute heavy features such as Deep Research, and their limits may be cut before paid users' limits. So when Gemini is busy, free users feel it first.

Which model free users get changed this month. Google now lists only the Flash-Lite model for free accounts, as explained in free Gemini moving to Flash-Lite only.

Four ways to keep working when Gemini runs out

Paid users can carry on with Flash-Lite after hitting the limit. Free users can wait five hours, start a fresh chat with a shorter prompt, or switch to another free AI tool for the rest of the task.

  • Wait for the reset. Note the time on the Usage Limits page and come back.
  • Trim your prompts. Long pasted documents and huge chats use more. Ask for one section at a time.
  • Use Flash-Lite on a paid plan. Google says subscribers can continue with Flash-Lite after their limit.
  • Switch tools. ChatGPT, Claude and DeepSeek all have free plans that work in Pakistan.

Students should look at the free year of Google AI Plus for students before paying. Doubling the limit for free is the best deal on this page.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read Google's Gemini usage limits and upgrades page on 27 October 2026 at about 01:00 PKT, including its plan table, feature table and country lists. The rupee prices come from Google's Pakistan plans page as we read it on 28 September 2026 and earlier in October, and may have changed since. Google does not publish exact prompt counts for any plan, so none are given. The 4 pm to 9 pm example is our arithmetic from the five hour rule.
