How to Get IBCC Equivalence for the IB Diploma in Pakistan: Five Subjects and a Minimum Grade of 3
IBCC has registered the IBO and approved the IB Diploma. See the five subjects, the minimum grade of 3 and the Urdu and Pakistan Studies rule for equivalence.

Short answer: IBCC has registered the International Baccalaureate Organization as a qualification awarding body and approved the IB Diploma for equivalence. For an HSSC equivalence you need five subjects including English, a minimum grade of 3 in each, and the right science or maths subjects for your group. Pakistani students must also pass Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies.
An IB student in Lahore or Islamabad often learns about the equivalence rules after the results arrive. That is late. A missing Urdu or Pakistan Studies pass can hold up a university seat.
We read the IBCC notification on the IB registration and IBCC's pages on IB equivalence and international qualification FAQs on 13 October 2026. IBCC's equivalence pages did not list a fee or a processing time, so we do not give either.
IBCC has registered the IB and approved the Diploma
In a notification dated 24 February 2026, IBCC says its Regulatory Committee recommended registering the IBO as a qualification awarding body in Pakistan and approved the IB Diploma Programme under its equivalence policy. The registration runs four years from 1 October 2025.
The same notice asks the IBO to build a full external assessment system in place of the current moderation system. That is a request to the IBO, not a change to what you submit today.
IBCC's list of registered foreign boards shows the IBO as Swiss, registered on 1 October 2025 and valid until 30 September 2029. IBCC also warns that registration of a body does not mean every qualification it offers is automatically recognised.

The Diploma needs five subjects and a grade of 3
For HSSC equivalence, IBCC asks for five subjects, English in all groups, and a minimum grade of 3. The other subjects depend on your group: Pre-Medical, Pre-Engineering, Computer Science or Humanities.
| Group | Five subjects IBCC lists |
|---|---|
| Pre-Medical | English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and one overall best |
| Pre-Engineering | English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and one overall best |
| Computer Science | English, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and one overall |
| Humanities | English and four elective academic subjects |
IBCC also says it judges the Diploma by its core parts: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service. You submit transcripts and the diploma.

Pakistani students must pass Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies
IBCC says Pakistani students taking the IB MYP or Diploma in Pakistan must pass Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies at the MYP, O level or SSC level. A Diploma with excellent grades does not replace these three subjects.
This is the rule that catches families by surprise. If your school does not offer these subjects, ask in Class 9 how it plans to cover them. Fixing this after the Diploma results is far harder.
The same condition appears for students from US schools in Pakistan, as the page on IBCC equivalence for a US high school diploma shows.
MYP and Career-related routes follow different rules
The Middle Years Programme counts toward SSC. Pakistani students need eight subjects, including English, Urdu, Islamiyat, Pakistan Studies, Mathematics and three electives. IBCC accepts MYP internal assessments only for students who studied abroad, not report cards from schools in Pakistan.
The Career-related Programme counts toward HSSC. You complete the career-related study and pass at least two subjects with a grade of 3 or higher for Humanities, or three for Pre-Medical or Pre-Engineering.

The top IB grade is treated like an A star for 2026 marks
IBCC's notification of 27 July 2026 gives equivalent marks for the top grade in 2026 O and A Level exams. It adds that the highest grade in other foreign qualifications, including the IB and Advanced Placement, is treated on the same analogy.
The notice does not print a separate table for the IB. If your aggregate depends on the exact mark, ask IBCC in writing before you assume a number. How the O and A Level marks work is explained in the note on the 2026 IBCC A star marks.
Check your path before you apply for a medical or engineering seat
IBCC says IB students can apply for medical and engineering programmes in Pakistan if they get an IBCC equivalence certificate and meet the subject criteria in science and maths. Universities and admission tests set their own rules on top, so check each one.
- List your six IB subjects and note the grade in each.
- Check that five of them match your group in the table above, with English and a grade of 3 or higher.
- Confirm you have passed Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies at MYP, O level or SSC.
- Apply for the equivalence certificate on the IBCC portal with your transcripts and diploma.
- Keep the QR code on the certificate. A certificate with a QR code can be checked online, as the page on checking an IBCC QR equivalence certificate explains.
If you took A Levels instead, the route differs. The overview of university admission dates for A Level students sets out the timing.
