Gilgit-Baltistan Independence Day 2026: 79th Anniversary Falls on Sunday 1 November, Is Monday Off?
Gilgit-Baltistan marks its 79th Independence Day on Sunday 1 November 2026. Read the President's message, key dates since 1947, Monday's status and the weather.

Gilgit-Baltistan marks its 79th Independence Day today, Sunday 1 November 2026. President Asif Ali Zardari's message, released by the Press Information Department on 31 October, recalls that on 1 November 1947 the people of the region overthrew Dogra rule and then wrote to Quaid-e-Azam to join Pakistan. Because the day falls on a Sunday this year, offices and schools in Gilgit-Baltistan were closed anyway.
The anniversary is marked in Gilgit-Baltistan on the same date every year. Below is what the federal government said, the region's key dates since 1947, whether Monday is affected, and the weather for anyone heading out today.
The President's message recalls the 1947 uprising against Dogra rule
In his message dated 31 October 2026, President Zardari said that 79 years ago the people of Gilgit-Baltistan overthrew the colonial yoke of Dogra rule, declared independence and soon after sent a letter of accession to Quaid-e-Azam. He paid tribute to those who took part.
The message also listed what the region needs most. It named better roads, schools, healthcare, reliable energy and jobs, and called the area's mountains, glaciers, rivers and culture among Pakistan's greatest assets. It noted Gilgit-Baltistan's direct border with China. The Press Information Department published it as press release 490.

Gilgit-Baltistan's key dates since 1947
The President's message traces the region's main reforms: the 1972 end of the Frontier Crimes Regulation and jagirdari system, the 1974 abolition of the princely states including Hunza and Nagar, the 1994 Legal Framework Order and the 2009 self-governance order.
| Year | What happened, as the message records it |
|---|---|
| 1947 | People overthrew Dogra rule on 1 November and wrote to Quaid-e-Azam for accession |
| 1972 | Frontier Crimes Regulation and jagirdari system abolished, Agency system replaced |
| 1974 | Remaining princely states, including Hunza and Nagar, abolished |
| 1994 | Legal Framework Order set up the Northern Areas Legislative Council |
| 2009 | Empowerment and Self-Governance Order gave the name Gilgit-Baltistan, an assembly, a Chief Minister and a Governor |
The message credits these reforms to Pakistan Peoples Party governments, which is the President's own party. Read that part as a party view. The years and the steps themselves match the orders named in the message.
Monday 2 November is a normal working day so far
We found no notice of a substitute holiday on Monday 2 November. The Gilgit-Baltistan government's website had no new notification when we checked on 1 November, so treat Monday as a working day unless your department tells you otherwise.
That matters for people who planned errands in Gilgit or Skardu around the holiday. Banks, courts and government offices should open as usual on Monday. Any change for Monday would have to come from the Gilgit-Baltistan government, since the federal list does not include this day. The next national holiday is Iqbal Day on Monday 9 November, which is in the full November 2026 holiday list.
Weather for 1 and 2 November in Gilgit-Baltistan
PMD's weekly outlook, issued on 31 October, expects partly cloudy, cold weather in the north on 1 November, with light rain or snow over the high mountains. On 2 November it expects light rain and mountain snow at isolated places in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Nights are cold, so dress for it if you are attending an outdoor ceremony. Anyone driving to the high valleys should read the latest snowfall forecast for Murree, Naran and Hunza before setting out, because light snow can close a pass for a few hours.

Roads and tourism are the federal promises to watch
On 31 October, Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan said the National Highway Authority would build tourist highways in Gilgit-Baltistan on a priority basis. He also stressed the Mansehra, Naran, Kaghan, Jalkhand and Chilas road project for links towards the Chinese border.
Those statements came in a speech in Faisalabad, published by the Press Information Department as press release 489. They are plans, not funded contracts with dates, and the release gives no budget for the Gilgit-Baltistan roads. We will report a start date when one is announced.
- Treat Monday 2 November as a working day unless your office says otherwise.
- Check the PMD forecast before driving to Astore, Hunza or Skardu.
- Keep emergency numbers saved, including Rescue 1122 in Gilgit and Skardu.
- Visitors with a problem can file a tourist complaint in Gilgit-Baltistan.
