Gold Hits a Record. Three Sites Showed Us Three Different Prices.
The association rate reached Rs 456,536 a tola. We opened three price sites at the same moment and none of them matched. Here is why.

Gold in Pakistan has climbed to a record. The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association rate reached Rs 456,536 a tola, up Rs 2,200 in a day and Rs 28,600 since 5 August.
So we did what we do with any number that matters. We opened three Pakistani gold price sites within the same few minutes on the evening of 10 August, and wrote down what each one said.
They did not agree. The gap between the highest and the lowest was about Rs 9,000 a tola.
What three sites showed at the same moment
| Source | Rate shown per tola |
|---|---|
| Sarafa association rate, as reported | Rs 456,536 |
| Price site A | Rs 452,254 |
| Price site B | Rs 447,500 |
| Difference, highest to lowest | About Rs 9,000 |
A fourth site refused our automated request. That is a bot block rather than a fault, and its rate may well be perfectly current in a browser. We are not counting it either way.
On a single tola, Rs 9,000 is roughly two per cent. On a set of wedding jewellery it is real money, and it is the difference between two tabs open on the same phone at the same time.
Why the numbers differ
We want to be careful here, because there is an innocent explanation and we could not test which one applies to which site.
Pakistan's jewellers quote the rate the sarafa association publishes. That is the number the trade actually uses. Aggregator sites either republish that figure or derive their own from international spot gold and an exchange rate. Those two methods will not produce the same answer, and sites that republish do not all refresh at the same time.
So a site showing a lower number is not necessarily wrong. It may be showing an earlier figure, or a differently derived one. What it is not doing is showing you the same thing as the site next to it.
We are not naming any site as unreliable, and we are not suggesting anyone is being dishonest. We are saying that if you check one page and treat it as the price, you may be out by two per cent.
The three things to check on any gold page
- Is there a timestamp? A page with no date and time on it is not a live rate, whatever the heading says.
- Which karat is it? 24 karat and 22 karat are different numbers, and the 22 karat figure is the one most jewellery is actually sold in. Sites display both and readers routinely take the wrong one.
- Is it the association rate or a derived rate? If the page does not say where its number comes from, treat it as indicative.
What is pushing the price
The move is not a Pakistan story on its own. International gold gained 22 dollars to 4,341 dollars an ounce over the same run, and the local rate follows the international price and the rupee together.
That is why the local number can move on a day when nothing happened in Pakistan, and it is also why a weaker rupee raises the tola price even when international gold is flat. Ten gram gold rose Rs 1,887 to Rs 391,406 alongside the tola move.
We explain the tola, the karat and how the local rate is built in our guide to the gold rate in Pakistan, which is the page to read if you want the mechanics rather than today's number.
If you are buying this week
- Ask which rate the shop is applying, and for which karat, before anything is weighed.
- Check that against the association figure for the same day rather than against a random site.
- Get the weight and the making charge written separately. Making charges are where the negotiation actually is.
- Keep the receipt. Resale, exchange and any dispute all rest on it.
- Do not rush at a record. A price that has moved Rs 28,600 in five days can move back.
We are not forecasting the price and we do not give investment advice. Nobody who tells you confidently where gold goes next knows either.
This keeps happening, and it is worth saying so
This is not the first time. On 8 August, gold was reported anywhere between Rs 437,000 and Rs 456,536 a tola across outlets that were all citing a sarafa association.
Where sources disagree, our position is to publish the disagreement rather than quietly pick the one that reads best. It is the same habit behind our checking of official portals, where the address in circulation is often not the working one, set out in testing Pakistani government websites.
Jewellers themselves have gone on strike over how the market is regulated, which we covered in the piece on the gold market shutdown.
Questions readers are asking
What is the gold rate in Pakistan today?
The sarafa association rate reached Rs 456,536 a tola, up Rs 2,200. Price sites we checked at the same moment showed Rs 452,254 and Rs 447,500, so check the timestamp on whichever page you use.
Why do gold websites show different prices?
Some republish the sarafa association rate and some derive a figure from international spot gold and the exchange rate, and they do not refresh at the same time. We could not determine which method each site uses.
Which gold rate do jewellers actually use?
The rate published by the sarafa association is the one the trade quotes. Ask the shop to confirm the rate and the karat before purchase.
How much has gold risen this month?
The per tola price rose Rs 28,600 between 5 and 10 August 2026. Ten gram gold rose Rs 1,887 to Rs 391,406 in the same run.
Is 24 karat the price I pay?
Usually not. Most jewellery is 22 karat, which carries a lower rate, and the shop adds making charges on top of the metal price.
Should I buy gold now?
We do not give investment advice and we are not forecasting the price. What we would say is that a record week rewards checking the rate and the making charge carefully rather than hurrying.
