Gold Rose Rs 10,000 a Tola in One Day. Three Different Prices Explain Why Every Site Shows a Different Number.

Gold rate in Pakistan per tola and how karat purity changes what you pay

Gold jumped Rs 10,000 a tola in a single session on Wednesday 5 August 2026. The All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association put 24 karat at Rs 437,936 per tola, up from Rs 427,936, with ten grams at Rs 375,459 against Rs 366,886 the day before.

Then you check a gold rate site and it says Rs 430,500. Another says something else again. So which one is the price?

All of them, and none of them, and the difference between them is worth about Rs 7,000 on one tola. Here is how the numbers actually work.

Why the rate rose

This was not a Pakistan story. Gold moved in the international bullion market, rising $100 an ounce to $4,155 from $4,055, with a subdued US dollar making dollar priced bullion cheaper for buyers holding other currencies.

Pakistan's rate follows that, converted at the prevailing exchange rate. Which means the local price can rise on a day when nothing happened here at all, and it also means a rupee movement can shift the tola rate while international gold sits still.

It is the same transmission that governs fuel, and it fails in the same ways. We went through the mechanics of an international price arriving in rupees in why petrol prices do not fall when oil does, and gold behaves the same way in reverse: the international move arrives quickly on the way up.

There are three different gold prices, and people mix them up

Which priceWhat it isCan you buy at it

Sarafa association rateThe trade body's daily rupee rate per tola and per 10 gramsClose, but it is a reference

Most rate websites publish some version of the second one, often at different times of day, which is why two sites can both be honest and still disagree by thousands of rupees. A rate captured at 11:30 in the morning and a rate issued after the association's session are not the same number.

The practical rule: a gold rate site tells you the direction, not your bill.

The arithmetic, so you can check any rate yourself

One tola is 11.664 grams. That single conversion lets you audit whether a quoted rate is internally consistent, and we did it on Wednesday's numbers.

Ten grams at Rs 375,459 works out to Rs 37,546 per gram. Multiply by 11.664 and you get roughly Rs 437,900, which matches the quoted tola rate of Rs 437,936 to within rounding. The two figures agree, which is the check worth running on any source before you trust it.

Karat is the other half of the arithmetic, and it is simple proportion:

  • 24 karat is pure gold, the headline rate.
  • 22 karat is 22 parts in 24, so 91.67 per cent of the 24 karat rate.
  • 21 karat is 87.5 per cent.
  • 18 karat is 75 per cent.

So on a 24 karat rate of Rs 437,936, a tola of 22 karat is around Rs 401,400 of gold content. If a shop quotes you meaningfully above that for 22 karat, the gap is making charges, and making charges are negotiable in a way the gold rate is not.

How karat purity converts to the gold rate in Pakistan

The three costs that are not the gold rate

This is where the money actually goes, and none of it appears on a rate ticker.

Making charges. Charged per tola or as a percentage, for the craftsmanship. They vary enormously between shops for identical weight and purity, and they are the single largest negotiable item on a jewellery purchase.

Purity deduction on resale. When you sell back, the shop assesses purity and deducts. Jewellery bought at 22 karat rarely returns 22 karat value, because the assessment happens on their equipment and their judgement.

The spread. The price to buy and the price to sell are not the same on the same day. Gold bought as jewellery has to rise by more than the making charges plus the spread before a resale breaks even.

What to do before you buy

  1. Check the association rate the same day, not a cached number from a site that updates when it feels like it.
  2. Ask for the rate, the weight and the making charges separately. A single lump sum hides which part is negotiable.
  3. Get purity in writing on the receipt. Karat, weight and rate, itemised. This is what protects you at resale.
  4. Weigh the item in front of you. Stones and beads are weight you pay gold rates for if nobody separates them.

None of this is advice about whether to buy. Gold at a record rupee level is exactly when the pressure to decide quickly is highest, and a rate that rose Rs 10,000 in a day can fall the same way.

Worth saying once, since gold is often bought as savings rather than jewellery: the comparison is against what your money would otherwise earn, and deposit rates in Pakistan currently sit close to inflation. We covered where those accounts now live in the piece on digital banks.

Questions readers are asking

What is the gold rate in Pakistan today?

On 5 August 2026 the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association quoted 24 karat at Rs 437,936 per tola and Rs 375,459 per ten grams, up Rs 10,000 and Rs 8,573 respectively. Rates move daily, so check the association's figure for the current day.

Why do gold rate websites show different prices?

Because they capture the rate at different times and some publish a retail estimate rather than the association reference. The direction is reliable across sources; the exact figure is not.

How many grams are in a tola?

11.664 grams. That conversion lets you check whether a site's tola rate and gram rate agree with each other.

What is the 22 karat rate if 24 karat is Rs 437,936?

Around Rs 401,400 per tola in gold content, since 22 karat is 91.67 per cent pure. Anything above that in a shop quote is making charges.

Why did gold rise on 5 August?

International bullion rose $100 an ounce to $4,155 as the US dollar stayed subdued. Pakistan's rate tracks the international price converted into rupees.

Will I get today's rate if I sell my jewellery?

No. Resale is assessed on purity and comes with a deduction, and the buy and sell prices differ on the same day. Making charges paid at purchase are not recovered.
