How to Wear a Waistcoat With Shalwar Kameez in Pakistan: Fit Rules, Colours and 6 Looks for Men
How to wear a waistcoat with shalwar kameez in Pakistan: 5 fit checks, which colours match each kameez, and 6 looks for men from Jummah and office to a nikah.

To wear a waistcoat with shalwar kameez, pick one that ends just below the waist and sits flat on the chest, match it to the kameez by contrast (dark waistcoat on a light kameez, or the other way round), and keep only one of the two patterned. Close all buttons except the last one, and let the kameez fall at least a hand's length below the waistcoat.
The waistcoat is the most useful piece in a Pakistani man's winter wardrobe. It turns a plain kameez into Friday prayer wear, an office look or a wedding outfit, and it adds a warm layer over the chest without the bulk of a jacket. Getting the fit and the colour right is what separates a sharp look from a borrowed one.
Below are the fit rules, a colour guide and six ready looks, each with what goes in it.

Fit decides more than fabric or price
A waistcoat should sit flat on the chest with no pulling at the buttons, end just below the waist, and leave room to sit down. If the buttons strain, it is too small. If it hangs off the shoulders, it is too big. A tailor can take in the back seam at low cost.
- Button it up and look at the front. It should lie flat with no X shaped pulls.
- Check the length. It should cover the waistband of the shalwar, not more.
- Raise your arms. The armholes should not lift the whole waistcoat.
- Sit down. If the bottom buttons strain, go one size up.
- Look at the kameez below it. At least a hand's length should show.
Leave the last button open. It lets the waistcoat move when you sit and it is the usual way to wear one.
Match colours by contrast, and keep one piece plain
The easy rule is contrast: a dark waistcoat on a light kameez or a light waistcoat on a dark one. Only one of the two should carry a pattern or embroidery. Two busy pieces fight each other in photos.
| Kameez colour | Waistcoat colours that work | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| White or off white | Black, navy, maroon, grey, bottle green | Jummah, nikah, Eid |
| Black | Grey, mustard, off white, jamawar | Evening functions |
| Navy | Grey, camel, off white | Office, dinners |
| Olive or brown | Black, cream, dark brown | Winter daily wear |
| Grey | Black, navy, maroon | Office, family events |
Look 1: Jummah in white with a black waistcoat

A white cotton or wash and wear kameez shalwar and a plain black waistcoat. This is the safest look in Pakistan, and it works from the mosque to a lunch. Black Peshawari chappals finish it.
Look 2: the office in grey and navy

A light grey kameez with a navy waistcoat looks as formal as a suit at most offices, and it is warmer than a shirt alone. Brown loafers suit it better than chappals for a working day.
Look 3: winter daily wear in olive khaddar

An olive or brown khaddar suit with a black wool waistcoat is warm enough for most of December in the plains. Add a shawl on foggy mornings. More khaddar ideas are in our guide to styling khaddar for winter.
Look 4: a dinner in black with a jamawar waistcoat

A black kameez with a woven jamawar waistcoat in gold and maroon. The kameez is plain so the waistcoat can be the statement. This works for a dinner, a mehndi or a qawwali night.
Look 5 and 6: nikah in cream, and a casual look with jeans

For a nikah, a cream kameez with a velvet waistcoat in bottle green or maroon. Velvet catches the light and keeps you warm. Our men's winter wedding outfits cover the other functions.

For a casual day, a short white kurta with jeans and a grey waistcoat. Keep the kurta short here, around mid thigh, so it does not look like a mismatch. Prices for waistcoats at the main brands are in our men's sweater and waistcoat price list.
Care keeps a waistcoat sharp for many winters
Most waistcoats are lined and stiffened at the front, so they should not go in a washing machine. Dry clean a wool, velvet or jamawar waistcoat once or twice a season. Between wears, hang it on a wide hanger and brush off dust with a soft clothes brush.
Air it for an hour after a dinner or a wedding before you put it back in the cupboard, so food and smoke smells fade. Steam velvet from the inside rather than pressing it, as our guide to ironing embroidered and velvet clothes explains. Store it away from the wall in damp houses, and keep a sachet of silica gel or a few cloves in the cupboard to keep moths off wool.
If you own only one waistcoat, buy it in black or navy in a plain wool blend. It will match nearly every kameez on this page, from Jummah to the office.
Common questions
What colour waistcoat goes with a white shalwar kameez?
Black is the safest. Navy, maroon, grey and bottle green also work well with white.
How long should a waistcoat be over a kameez?
It should end just below the waist and cover the shalwar's waistband. At least a hand's length of kameez should show below it.
Should I button the last button of a waistcoat?
Usually no. Leaving the last button open lets it sit better when you sit or move.
Can I wear a waistcoat with jeans and a kurta?
Yes. Choose a short kurta and a plain waistcoat in grey, navy or black.
Which waistcoat fabric is warmest?
Wool and velvet are the warmest. Jamawar is heavy and formal. Cotton waistcoats are lighter and suit autumn.
Can a patterned waistcoat go on a printed kameez?
It is better not to. Keep one piece plain so the look stays clean.
