Men's Winter Wedding Outfits in Pakistan: 6 Looks for Mehndi, Nikah, Barat and Walima
Men's winter wedding outfits in Pakistan: 6 looks for mehndi, nikah, barat, walima and dholki, what guests and close family wear, and how to stay warm outdoors.

For a winter wedding in Pakistan, men do best with one rule per event: a kurta with a waistcoat or shawl for the mehndi, a white or cream kameez with a waistcoat for the nikah, a sherwani or prince coat for the barat if you are close family, and a dark suit or a kameez with a jacket for the walima. Warmth comes from the waistcoat, a shawl and the right fabric, not a puffer over formal wear.
A winter wedding week can mean four functions in five days, two of them outdoors on a lawn after dark. Most men own one good suit and one sherwani at best. The trick is to build six looks from a few pieces that mix, and to stay warm without looking like you came straight from the car park.
Here are six looks, what each one is made of, and how to dress them up or down for your place in the wedding.

Match the outfit to the function and your role
The groom and close family dress one level above guests. A brother of the groom can wear a sherwani at the barat. A colleague should not. As a guest, a kurta with a waistcoat works for almost every function, and a dark suit covers the walima.
| Function | Guest | Close family |
|---|---|---|
| Mehndi | Coloured kurta, plain waistcoat | Embroidered kurta, shawl or waistcoat |
| Nikah | White or cream kameez, waistcoat | Same, with a jamawar or velvet waistcoat |
| Barat | Kameez with waistcoat, or a suit | Prince coat or sherwani |
| Walima | Dark two piece suit | Three piece suit or tuxedo |
| Dholki at home | Khaddar kurta, sweater or shawl | Same, a brighter colour |
Look 1: mehndi in a mustard kurta and black waistcoat

Mustard, green or rust kurta, white shalwar and a black or charcoal waistcoat. Mehndi is the one function where colour is expected. For an outdoor mehndi, pick a khaddar or cotton silk kurta rather than thin lawn, and wear a vest under it. Brown Peshawari chappals or khussas finish it.
Look 2: nikah in cream with a velvet waistcoat

A white or cream kameez shalwar with a maroon, bottle green or navy velvet waistcoat. Velvet is warm and photographs well under mosque or hall lights. Keep the waistcoat plain if the kameez is embroidered, and the other way round.
Look 3: barat in a prince coat

A prince coat is a fitted long coat that sits shorter and plainer than a sherwani. It suits brothers, cousins and close friends at the barat. Black, navy or deep green over an off white kurta pajama is safe. The full sherwani is for the groom, and our sherwani and prince coat price guide lists what the main brands charge.
Look 4: the groom's winter sherwani

Ivory, gold or champagne sherwani with a churidar and khussas, and a shawl over one shoulder for the outdoor part. A sherwani is lined and heavy, so it is already warmer than it looks. A thin thermal top underneath is enough for a cold night in Lahore or Islamabad.
Look 5: walima in a dark suit

A charcoal, navy or black two piece in a wool blend, a white shirt and black oxfords. Wool blend is warmer than polyester and creases less. If you are close family, add a waistcoat for a three piece. Our list of men's formal shoe prices covers the shoes.
Look 6: dholki and family dinners in khaddar and a shawl

Olive, brown or grey khaddar kameez shalwar with a wool shawl. This is the warmest look on the list and the least formal. Ways to drape it are in our guide on how to wear a shawl.
Stay warm at an outdoor function without spoiling the look
Warmth should be hidden. Wear a thin thermal or a cotton vest under the kameez, pick velvet, khaddar or wool blend over thin cotton, and carry a shawl rather than a jacket. Warm feet matter too: wear socks with khussas if the night is cold.
- Wear a thin thermal or vest under every formal look.
- Choose a waistcoat in velvet, jamawar or wool for an extra layer.
- Carry a plain shawl in black, brown or grey. It goes with everything.
- Keep a dark sweater in the car for the drive home.
- Book the tailor at least three weeks before the first function.

Common questions
What should men wear to a winter wedding in Pakistan?
A kurta or kameez with a waistcoat works for most functions. Add a prince coat or sherwani for the barat if you are close family, and a dark suit for the walima.
Can a guest wear a sherwani to a barat?
It is better not to. The sherwani is the groom's outfit. Close family can wear a prince coat, which looks formal without competing with the groom.
What colour waistcoat goes with a white kameez?
Black, navy, maroon, bottle green and grey all work. Velvet in maroon or green looks best in winter.
How do I stay warm in a kurta at an outdoor mehndi?
Wear a thermal or vest underneath, choose khaddar or cotton silk, add a waistcoat and carry a shawl.
Is a suit or shalwar kameez better for a walima?
Both are fine. A dark suit is the more common choice for the walima, while a kameez with a jacket or waistcoat suits families who prefer eastern wear.
Which shoes go with a waistcoat and kameez?
Peshawari chappals, khussas or plain leather loafers. Keep oxfords for suits.
