Candidates for Islamabad's local government elections now have until Sunday 8 November 2026 to file nomination papers with their Returning Officer. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) extended the deadline by two days on 5 November and issued a revised programme. Polling day stays the same: Sunday 20 December 2026, from 8am to 4pm.
The elections are for the general seats of union councils in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT). We read the ECP's original programme of 21 October, the revised programme of 5 November and the ECP's press releases of 2 and 5 November on the commission's website on 6 November 2026. Below is every date in the new schedule, what moved, and what voters and candidates should do this week.
Nomination papers can be filed until 8 November 2026
The ECP's revised programme lets candidates file nomination papers with Returning Officers from 2 November to 8 November 2026. The original programme had closed filing on 6 November. The ECP says Returning Officers' offices stay open on public holidays when a schedule activity falls on that day.
The ECP's Urdu press release of 5 November asks every intending candidate to submit papers with complete documents before the deadline to avoid difficulty. An earlier ECP release, dated 2 November, said 16 Returning Officers had issued 1,847 nomination forms. It rejected a claim made on television that the offices had been closed and papers not issued.

The revised Islamabad schedule moves every step by two days except polling
The extension pushed every middle step back by two to three days. Scrutiny, appeals, withdrawal and symbol allotment all move. Polling on 20 December 2026 and result consolidation from 21 to 24 December did not change, so the gap between symbols and polling shrinks from 23 days to 21.
| Step | Original, 21 October | Revised, 5 November |
|---|---|---|
| Filing of nomination papers | 2 to 6 November | 2 to 8 November |
| Names of nominated candidates published | 7 November | 10 November |
| Scrutiny by Returning Officers | 9 to 13 November | 11 to 16 November |
| Appeals against acceptance or rejection | 14 to 18 November | 17 to 20 November |
| Appeals decided | 19 to 23 November | 21 to 25 November |
| Revised list of candidates | 24 November | 26 November |
| Last date to withdraw | 25 November | 27 November |
| Symbols allotted, final list published | 26 November | 28 November |
| Polling day | 20 December (Sunday) | 20 December (Sunday) |
| Consolidation of results | 21 to 24 December | 21 to 24 December |
Scrutiny and appeal periods exclude Sundays, according to the programme. Polling hours are 8am to 4pm.

Candidates should file complete papers with their own Returning Officer
A nomination paper goes to the Returning Officer for the union council where you want to stand. The ECP notified a District Returning Officer, Returning Officers and Assistant Returning Officers for ICT on 23 October 2026. Papers are checked at scrutiny from 11 November, and the ECP's release asks candidates to file them with complete documents.
Here is a simple order of work for a candidate this weekend.
- Confirm your own vote and union council by sending your CNIC number to 8300.
- Get the nomination form from the Returning Officer for that union council.
- Collect the documents and signatures the form asks for, including your proposer and seconder.
- File the paper in person with the Returning Officer by 8 November 2026, and keep the receipt.
- Check the list of nominated candidates on 10 November and attend scrutiny from 11 November.
We have not listed a nomination fee or a full document list here. The ECP's programme does not print them, and we could not read the ICT local government election rules on an official page on 6 November. Ask your Returning Officer for the exact list when you collect the form.

Voters in Islamabad can check their union council by SMS
Every registered voter in Islamabad can confirm their electoral area by sending their CNIC number to 8300. The reply shows the electoral area, block code and serial number. That is also how you will find your polling station before 20 December.
Our guide to checking your vote with 8300 explains the reply. If the ECP has your old address, our page on voter registration in Pakistan covers how to transfer your vote. A change made now may not count for this election once the list is frozen, so ask the District Election Commissioner's office before you rely on it.
The ECP is also preparing security and ballot papers
At a briefing on 2 November 2026, the Chief Election Commissioner was told that all election material had been bought and arrangements for printing ballot papers were complete. The ECP has written to the Interior Secretary, the Islamabad police chief and the Deputy Commissioner about arrangements. A security meeting was called for 10 November 2026.
The ECP has also told the Deputy Commissioner to give Returning Officers offices, staff, equipment and transport. The original programme bars any executive authority from announcing development projects or using state resources to influence the election. Punjab's local elections are on a separate track; our report on the Punjab first phase on 7 February 2027 has that decision.
