The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided that the first phase of local government elections in Punjab will be held on Sunday 7 February 2027. The decision came at a hearing in Islamabad on 5 November 2026, after the Punjab government asked for polls in January or February 2027. The ECP has not yet published the full election programme, the list of districts in the first phase or the nomination dates.

We read the ECP's own press release of 5 November 2026, which is in Urdu, on the commission's website on 6 November. This page sets out what the ECP decided, how the date moved over the past three months, and what a voter or a would-be candidate in Punjab can do now. Our earlier report on the ECP rejecting Punjab's April 2027 plan covers the October round of this dispute.

The ECP fixed 7 February 2027 for the first phase in Punjab

The ECP's press release says the commission decided that the first phase of local government elections in Punjab will take place on 7 February 2027. It took the decision after considering the Punjab government's request, which said the weather improves in February. Later phases were not dated.

A four-member bench of the commission heard the case. Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja headed it. The Chief Secretary of Punjab appeared and briefed the commission on the province's position.

Local government means the bodies closest to your street: union councils, municipal committees and district councils. They deal with local roads, drains, markets and birth and death registration. So the date matters to almost every household in the province.

Punjab's dates changed three times before the ECP decided

The press release gives the history in its own words. Punjab first agreed to hold the polls between 15 December 2026 and 15 January 2027. A Punjab cabinet committee then recommended April 2027. Now the province has asked for January or February 2027, and the ECP chose 7 February.

Here is the sequence as the ECP's 5 November release records it.

School teachers matter because they usually serve as polling staff. The release says the province had argued they would not be available during the smog, fog and Ramazan period. The ECP did not say how it will handle the later phases around Ramazan.

How Punjab's local election dates moved from December 2026 to April 2027 and then to 7 February 2027

The full Punjab election programme is still to come

The 5 November decision fixes one date only. The ECP has not yet issued the formal election programme, which is the notice that lists dates for nomination papers, scrutiny, appeals, withdrawal, symbols and polling. Until it does, nobody can file papers for the first phase.

Three things are not in the ECP's release, so we do not state them as fact:

  • Which districts or divisions vote in the first phase.
  • How many phases there will be and when the others fall.
  • When nomination papers open for the first phase.

For comparison, the ECP's programme for Islamabad's local elections gave about seven weeks between the first day for nomination papers and polling day. If Punjab follows a similar pattern, its programme would need to appear by about mid December 2026. That is our estimate from the Islamabad timetable, not an ECP statement. Our page on the Islamabad local government election schedule has those dates.

Voters in Punjab can check their entry now

You do not need to wait for the programme to make sure you can vote. Send your CNIC number to 8300 and the ECP replies with your electoral area, block code and serial number. If anything is wrong, the correction has to be made before the voter list for the election is frozen.

  1. Type your 13-digit CNIC number without dashes in a new SMS.
  2. Send it to 8300 from any network.
  3. Read the reply: electoral area, block code and serial number.
  4. If your address or name is wrong, go to your District Election Commissioner's office with your CNIC.
  5. Keep the reply. You will need the block code to find your polling station later.

Our step-by-step guide to checking your vote with 8300 covers the reply format. If your name or address is wrong, our guide on correcting voter list details with ECP forms lists the forms.

What candidates in Punjab should prepare before the schedule

Anyone planning to stand for a union council seat can get papers ready now. A candidate usually needs a valid CNIC, an entry on the voter list of the area, and a proposer and seconder who are voters there. The exact forms, fees and deadlines will be in the ECP's programme and Punjab's local government election rules.

We have not stated a nomination fee here, because the ECP has not published one for Punjab's 2027 polls on its website. Check the programme when it appears, and file papers only with the Returning Officer named in it.

What we checked and sources

We read the ECP's press release on the conduct of local government elections in Punjab, dated 5 November 2026, on 6 November. It is in Urdu; the English wording above is our translation. We also read the ECP's revised election programme for Islamabad, dated 5 November 2026, for the comparison of timelines. The ECP had not published a Punjab election programme, phase list or nomination fee on its website when we checked.
