Meezan Is Pakistan's Best Bank, According to Three Different Awards
Three separate bodies have named Meezan the best bank. What each award actually is, when it was given, and the numbers behind the latest one.

Meezan Bank holds the title of best bank in Pakistan. It holds it three times over, from three separate bodies, given on three different dates.
That is worth untangling, because the titles get quoted as though they were one thing, and the most recent of them is three months old rather than new this week.
The three titles
| Awarded by | When | The actual title |
|---|---|---|
| Global Finance Magazine | May 2026 | Best Islamic Financial Institution, Pakistan |
| Pakistan Banking Awards | November 2025 | Best Bank, its third win |
| CFA Society Pakistan | November 2025 | Best Bank of the Year, Large Size Banks |
| CFA Society Pakistan | November 2025 | Best Islamic Bank of the Year |
Notice that only one of these is called best bank of Pakistan without qualification, and that is the Pakistan Banking Awards title from November 2025.
The Global Finance award, which is the newest, is specifically for the best Islamic financial institution in Pakistan. That is a real distinction, not a technicality, because it is judged against Islamic banks rather than the whole sector.
What the newest award actually said
Global Finance published its World's Best Islamic Financial Institutions 2026 list on 20 May 2026. Its citation for Meezan is short, and it is the only one of the three that sets out numbers.
It credits a strong 2025, in which:
- Total deposits rose 28 per cent to 17.2 billion dollars, helped by a large branch and ATM network.
- Mobile app users grew 40 per cent to more than 4.3 million.
- Financial transactions through the app grew 40 per cent to 553 million.
- WhatsApp Banking was named as a channel the bank had strengthened.
Those are checkable claims about scale and growth, which is more than most award citations offer. A 28 per cent rise in deposits in a single year is the substantial one. Deposits are the raw material of a bank, and growing them faster than the sector is the clearest sign that customers are choosing you.
The app figures are worth reading together rather than separately. Users up 40 per cent and transactions up 40 per cent means the new users are actually transacting at roughly the same rate as the existing ones, rather than downloading the app and abandoning it.
What the awards do not tell you
Here is the honest limit, and it applies to all three.
We looked for the judging criteria behind each award and did not find them published. No scoring method, no weighting, no list of what was measured.
We are stating that as a limit of our search, not as an accusation. Award panels can be perfectly rigorous without publishing a rubric, and we have no evidence of anything improper about any of these three.
But it does mean something practical for a reader. Nobody outside the panel can check the reasoning, so a best bank title is an opinion held by a credible body rather than a measurement you can reproduce. The deposit and app figures above are the part you can actually verify.
Meezan was not the only winner
Award coverage tends to report the top prize and stop, which makes a single bank look dominant across everything. The November 2025 Pakistan Banking Awards spread the categories widely.
- Bank of Punjab took three: agriculture inclusion, women's inclusion and SMEs.
- Bank Alfalah took digital excellence and customer engagement.
- Faysal Bank was named best mid-sized bank.
- HBL took best bank for ESG.
- Kashf Foundation was named best microfinance institution.
So if you are choosing a bank for a specific need rather than in general, the category winners are more useful than the headline. A bank that wins on SME lending is telling you something narrower and more actionable than one that wins on everything.
The State Bank Governor, Jameel Ahmad, presented the top award to Meezan's chief executive Irfan Siddiqui, and was reported as appreciating the institution's performance and commitment to excellence. No further reasoning was given in the reporting we read.
Nothing new was announced this week
We should be plain about this, because it is the sort of thing that circulates without a date attached.
We searched for a best bank announcement in August 2026 and did not find one. The newest award we could verify is the Global Finance listing from 20 May 2026. The two titles that use the words best bank most directly are both from November 2025.
Bank awards recirculate constantly, in marketing, in social posts and in articles that carry no date. If you have seen this described as breaking, that is probably why.
None of that makes the awards less real. It just means they are not news today, and we would rather tell you that than dress up a nine month old ceremony as a fresh development.
What we could not verify
We read the Global Finance award page directly, and Dawn's report of the Pakistan Banking Awards ceremony. The CFA Society details come from reporting rather than from the society's own page.
Meezan's own awards and recognition page did not render for us when we tried it, so we could not cross check the full list against the bank's own record.
We have not stated Meezan's profit, its market share, or its ranking against other Pakistani banks by size. Those figures exist but we did not verify them for this piece, and a bank's ranking is exactly the sort of number that should not be repeated second hand.
We could not establish the judging criteria for any of the three awards.
If you are choosing where to keep your money, an award is a weak signal next to the things you can check yourself: what the account costs to run, what the charges are, and whether complaints get resolved. Our guides to bank SMS charges and complaining to the Banking Mohtasib cover both, and the digital banks explainer covers the newer entrants.
