New Car Registration Cost in Punjab 2026-27: Fee, Token Tax and Advance Tax Worked Out
Punjab charges 1% to 4% of a new car's value to register it, plus token, advance tax and CVT. See the full 2026-27 cost for an Alto, Yaris and Corolla here.

Registering a new car in Punjab costs 1% of its value up to 1000cc, 2% from 1001cc to 2000cc and 4% above 2000cc, before token tax, advance income tax and the Rs 1,300 smart card. For a Suzuki Alto VXR, a filer pays about Rs 66,400 in all. For a Toyota Corolla 1.6 MT, about Rs 324,700.
Those totals surprise most first-time buyers, who budget for the showroom price and little else. We took every rate from the Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department's own motor vehicle tax page and worked out three popular cars line by line.
The registration fee is a percentage of the car's value
Punjab charges a one-time registration fee of 1% of the value for cars up to 1000cc, 2% for 1001cc to 2000cc and 4% above 2000cc. Motorcycles pay flat amounts from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 up to 150cc.
| Engine size | Registration fee |
|---|---|
| Car up to 1000cc | 1% of value |
| Car 1001cc to 2000cc | 2% of value |
| Car above 2000cc | 4% of value |
| Motorcycle up to 70cc | Rs 1,000 |
| Motorcycle 101cc to 125cc | Rs 2,000 |
| Motorcycle above 150cc | 2% of value |
"Value" here means the invoice value on your sales papers. The excise office works from the original sales invoice and sales certificate, which the maker or dealer gives you.

Token tax for 2026-27 is 0.3% of the invoice price above 1000cc
For 2026-27, Punjab's token tax is Rs 20,000 for cars up to 1000cc, 0.3% of the invoice price for 1001cc to 2000cc and 0.4% above 2000cc. The first year's token is paid at registration.
The Rs 20,000 for small cars works as a lifetime token. The department's page says that if a car up to 1000cc is transferred within ten years, Rs 20,000 is charged with a 10% rebate for each year passed, which only makes sense for a one-time payment. For bigger cars, the 0.3% or 0.4% is due every year. How the rates rose from last year is set out in paying Punjab token tax online.
The same table also lists a Rs 200 professional tax for every car category, so we have added it to each total below.
Advance income tax is the biggest extra for most buyers
Under section 231B of the Income Tax Ordinance, advance tax is collected on a new car. Punjab's page lists it as a share of value, from 0.5% up to 850cc to 12% above 3000cc for filers, and three times that for non-filers.
| Engine size | Filer | Non-filer |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 850cc | 0.5% | 1.5% |
| 851cc to 1000cc | 1% | 3% |
| 1001cc to 1300cc | 1.5% | 4.5% |
| 1301cc to 1600cc | 2% | 6% |
| 1601cc to 1800cc | 3% | 9% |
| 1801cc to 2000cc | 5% | 15% |
| 2001cc to 2500cc | 7% | 21% |
A filer is a person on the FBR's Active Taxpayers List. If the maker already collected this tax when you bought the car, the excise office should not collect it again. Carry the invoice that shows the tax. The rules on that are in advance tax when you buy or transfer a vehicle.

Cars above 1300cc also pay 1% capital value tax
Punjab charges capital value tax (CVT) of 1% of value on cars above 1300cc at new registration, if it was not already paid. It applies again on each transfer for five years, with the value cut by 10% a year.
That line catches people buying a 1.3 litre car, because many models sit just above the limit. The Toyota Yaris 1.3 is 1329cc, for example, so it pays CVT while a 1300cc car does not.
Three popular cars, worked out line by line
We used the makers' October 2026 list prices as the value. Your invoice may differ slightly, so treat these as close estimates. Every rate is from the Punjab excise page.
| Item | Alto VXR (Rs 2,994,861) | Yaris 1.3 GLi MT (Rs 4,649,000) | Corolla 1.6 MT (Rs 6,099,000) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registration fee | 29,949 (1%) | 92,980 (2%) | 121,980 (2%) |
| Token tax, first year | 20,000 | 13,947 (0.3%) | 18,297 (0.3%) |
| Professional tax | 200 | 200 | 200 |
| Capital value tax | Nil | 46,490 (1%) | 60,990 (1%) |
| Smart card | 1,300 | 1,300 | 1,300 |
| Advance tax, filer | 14,974 (0.5%) | 92,980 (2%) | 121,980 (2%) |
| Total, filer | 66,423 | 247,897 | 324,747 |
| Total, non-filer | 96,372 | 433,857 | 568,707 |

Number plates are extra. The department lists them as a charge but showed no amount on the page when we read it. The list prices themselves are in car prices for October 2026 from the makers' own lists.
The lesson is plain. On a Corolla, being a non-filer costs about Rs 244,000 more at registration alone. Filing a return costs far less than that.
How to register a new car in Punjab
Since Punjab's rule that a new car must be registered before delivery, the dealer usually starts the process for you. You still need to know what is being paid in your name. The background is in Punjab's no number plate, no delivery rule.
- Get the original sales certificate and sales invoice from the dealer.
- Fill in Form F, the application for registration, with your CNIC copy.
- Pay the registration fee, number plate fee, token tax and other taxes on the challan.
- Complete biometric verification of the owner.
- Collect the number plates and wait for the smart card by courier.

If the card takes a while, you can track it through the Punjab vehicle smart card status check. Electric cars get 95% off both the registration fee and the motor vehicle tax, which changes the sums entirely; see registering an electric car in Pakistan.
Common questions
What is the registration fee for a new car in Punjab?
It is 1% of the value up to 1000cc, 2% from 1001cc to 2000cc and 4% above 2000cc.
Is token tax paid at the time of registration?
Yes. The first year's token tax is paid with the registration fee. Cars up to 1000cc pay Rs 20,000, and larger cars pay 0.3% or 0.4% of the invoice price.
Do non-filers pay more to register a car in Punjab?
Yes. The advance income tax for a non-filer is three times the filer rate in every engine band.
Does a 1300cc car pay capital value tax?
No. CVT applies to cars above 1300cc, so a car of exactly 1300cc does not pay it.
How much does an electric car pay to register in Punjab?
Electric vehicles get a 95% exemption from both the registration fee and the motor vehicle tax.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked on 9 October 2026. The registration fee, token tax, professional tax, capital value tax, advance tax, smart card fee, lifetime token rule and electric vehicle exemption are from the Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department's motor vehicle tax page. The documents are from its vehicle registration page. The car prices are the makers' October 2026 list prices, and every total is our own arithmetic.
