Short answer: A foreign journalist who is not based in Pakistan gets a 3 month multiple stay visa for Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad, if the name is not on the negative list. Long stays or extra cities need the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. DGIP says security agencies must reply within 4 weeks.

A reporter from Dubai wants to cover a cricket series in Lahore and a trade fair in Karachi. She asks the Pakistan mission for a visa and is told the city list matters. The visa she gets depends on whether she is based in Pakistan or only visiting.

We read the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGIP) visa categories page on 13 October 2026. It shows a last modified date of 14 September 2026. The journalist visa now sits inside the Work Visa category after DGIP merged 18 visa types into 11.

Journalists based in Pakistan get a visa for the assignment

Pakistan missions abroad can grant a visa to journalists accredited and based in Pakistan for the duration of the assignment, after consulting the press attaches and link offices. The visa covers Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. Indian journalists are excluded from this arrangement.

A journalist who wants to travel to other cities must apply through the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. That rule matters for reporters who plan to file from Peshawar, Quetta or the north. Ask your editor to plan the route before the visa is applied for, not after.

Visiting journalists get 3 months for three cities

For a journalist not based in Pakistan, DGIP says that if the name is not on the negative list, the mission grants 3 months validity and stay, with multiple entries, for Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. The mission verifies the journalist's credentials first.

That is the fast route. It suits a reporter who covers one event and leaves. A person who wants a longer visa, or a visa for more cities, follows the longer route in the next section, which involves the information ministry and the security agencies.

Long stays go through the information ministry

For an extension or a long term visa, DGIP says the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting provides a list of journalists, and the security agencies are bound to give clearance or refusal within four weeks. Missions then grant 3 months multiple stay for Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi after checking credentials.

Short visits also have a rule. Non-based foreign journalists on short visits can get a one month extension with two re-entries from a Regional Passport Office, on the recommendation of the information ministry. Requests to visit extra places are decided case by case.

Apply in five steps

The page does not print a form list for journalists. These steps are our reading of the process, so confirm each one with the mission before you buy a ticket.

  1. Confirm you are not on the negative list by asking the Pakistan mission.
  2. Prepare proof of your employer, your assignment and your past work.
  3. Apply at the Pakistan mission and name only the cities you must visit.
  4. If you need other cities or a longer stay, ask the information ministry to recommend you.
  5. Extend any short stay at the Regional Passport Office before it ends.
Five steps for a foreign journalist to get a Pakistan visa

Plan the route before you apply

Plan every city before you apply. The standard visa names only three cities, so a story in Peshawar or Skardu needs a separate request. Send that request early, because the information ministry and the security agencies have up to four weeks, and a late request can cost you the assignment.

Keep your editor's letter, your press card and your return ticket in one folder. The page does not list them as required, but they answer the first questions an officer is likely to ask. Ask the mission before you report on any other visa type.

A journalist who stays past the visa pays the overstay surcharge, covered in the page on the overstay surcharge for foreigners. Foreigners from some countries must also report to the police, as explained in how to register a foreigner with Islamabad Police.

Visiting reporters often buy a local SIM. The rules are in the guide for a foreigner who wants to buy a SIM in Pakistan. For a plain holiday, use the tourist e-visa route and not a press visa.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 13 October 2026. We read the DGIP visa categories page. We could not read the name of any negative list, which DGIP does not publish on that page, or the journalist fee. We did not apply for a visa.
