Pakistan Railways Emergency Until 31 December 2026: Officers' Leave Cancelled, What It Means for Passengers
Pakistan Railways declared a safety emergency on 24 October 2026 until 31 December: leave cancelled, Sunday inspections, daily reports. Trains run as normal.

Pakistan Railways is under a safety emergency until 31 December 2026, declared on 24 October on the orders of Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi: field officers' leave is cancelled for three months, officers must inspect on Sundays too, and chief engineers and the head of safety must send daily reports. Trains are running as normal. The emergency is about checks behind the scenes, not about cancelling services.
The order was announced through state media on 24 October 2026. When we checked that evening, neither the Pakistan Railways website nor the Ministry of Railways website had posted it. It comes eleven days after the Rehman Baba Express derailed near Multan on 13 October. The announcement does not link the two, so we do not either. Below is what the emergency requires, what it means if you have a ticket, and how to report a safety problem you see on a train or at a station.
The railway emergency runs from 24 October to 31 December 2026
The emergency was declared on 24 October 2026 and stays in force until 31 December 2026, about ten weeks. It was ordered by the Railways Minister "to ensure safe train operations". No train, route or booking was suspended as part of it.
The minister said the government wants passengers to have the safest possible journey. In practice, the order puts officers on the track and in the yards more often, and makes the engineers who look after track, bridges and rolling stock report to the ministry every day.

Officers lose leave for three months and must inspect on Sundays
All field officers' leave is cancelled for three months. Officers must visit the field on Sundays as well. Civil and mechanical chief engineers, and the head of safety, must submit daily reports to the ministry. Officers travelling for duty must go by train.
| Rule in the emergency | Who it applies to | Why it matters for safety |
|---|---|---|
| Leave cancelled for three months | All field officers | Keeps inspection staff on duty through the winter fog season |
| Field visits on Sundays too | Railway officers | Track and yards are checked seven days a week |
| Daily reports to the ministry | Civil and Mechanical Chief Engineers | Track, bridges, coaches and engines are reviewed every day |
| Daily safety report | Head of Safety | One officer answers for safety across the system |
| Travel by train on duty | Officers going to other cities | Officers see train conditions first hand |
The civil chief engineer looks after track and bridges. The mechanical chief engineer looks after coaches, wagons and engines. Those are the two areas where most derailments start, so it makes sense that their reports go up daily.
Trains, tickets and timings do not change for passengers
Nothing in the order cancels a train or changes a fare. Your booked ticket is valid as before, and timings stay as published. If extra inspections slow a train on a stretch of track, you may see a delay, but no route-wide change has been announced.
That is worth saying plainly because "emergency" sounds alarming on a WhatsApp forward. It is an internal order for staff. If you are travelling this week, check your train's timing on the day, as you would anyway.
If your train runs very late, Pakistan Railways' own FAQ says a refund is due for the untravelled part of a journey when a train runs more than six hours late. Keep your ticket and ask at the booking office of the station where you get off.

Report a safety problem to 1333, 117 or the station master
If you see a safety problem on a train or at a station, tell the guard or the station master first. The Railway Police helpline is 1333, and the railway inquiry number is 117. Pakistan Railways lists a printed complaint book with every station master and guard.
- Tell the conductor guard, the train in-charge or the station master straight away, and note the train number and coach.
- For a police matter, such as theft, harassment or a threat, call the Railway Police on 1333.
- For train running and timing questions, call the inquiry number, 117.
- For an e-ticket problem, call Pakistan Railways on 042-99070011, or your payment provider: JazzCash on 4444 from a Jazz number, Easypaisa on 3737 from a Telenor number.
- Write your complaint in the station complaint book and keep a photo of the page.
- If nothing happens, use the Suggestions and Complaints form on the Pakistan Railways website.
Pakistan Railways publishes the time it takes to deal with each kind of complaint. Delays in arrival and departure, food quality, and train lighting and air conditioning are each set at one week. Cleanliness and new train requests take two weeks, and the same timetable applies to every Pakistan Railways complaint you file.
Signalling upgrades are under way at Lahore stations
Separately from the emergency, Pakistan Railways is replacing manual track points with a computer-based interlocking system in the Lahore division. Lahore Cantt station began trial operations on the new system on 21 October 2026, a railway official was reported as saying.
Computer-based interlocking sets a train's route by computer and blocks any route that would clash with another train. If something fails, the signals go to a stop. The same official was reported as saying Shahdara, Raiwind and Okara Cantt already have it, and Lahore's main station will get it in the next couple of months. We could not find this on an official Pakistan Railways page, so treat the dates as reported.
The upgrades and the emergency both follow a hard month for the railway. The Rehman Baba Express derailment near Multan on 13 October went to a departmental inquiry on 17 and 18 October.

How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked 24 October 2026. The emergency, its end date and its five rules come from the Railways Ministry's announcement as carried by state media on 24 October 2026; we checked the Ministry of Railways website and Pakistan Railways' press release page that evening and found it not yet posted. The helpline numbers, the six hour refund rule and the complaint times come from the Pakistan Railways FAQ, its Contact Us page and its Complaints Resolution Time page, all read on 24 October 2026. The Lahore Cantt signalling trial is reported, not confirmed on an official page. We could not verify whether the emergency was triggered by the 13 October derailment.
