Pakistan lost 4-0 to Thailand on Saturday. The Philippines lost 1-0 to Vietnam a few hours later, on the same ground, to a 25th minute goal from Nguyen Dinh Bac.

The match starts at 2:00 pm PKT on Tuesday 29 September at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium, Bandung. FIFA lists the Philippines as the home side. It is Pakistan's second of three Group B games, and the one they have the best chance of winning.

That is 4:00 pm local time in Bandung, which runs two hours ahead of Pakistan. The same stadium hosted both of Saturday's Group B games, so neither side has to travel.

The Philippines are coached by Carles Cuadrat. Pakistan are coached by Nolberto Solano, who started captain Abdullah Iqbal and goalkeeper Yousuf Butt against Thailand. FIFA had not named a referee for Tuesday when we checked.

Vietnam beat the Philippines 1-0 on Saturday

Vietnam beat the Philippines 1-0 in Bandung on Saturday 26 September. Nguyen Dinh Bac scored in the 25th minute. FIFA's data lists the kick-off at 6:00 pm PKT, and the Philippines' Amani Aguinaldo was booked in the 57th minute.

A one-goal defeat to Vietnam is a respectable result. Vietnam, coached by Kim Sang-sik, are one of the stronger sides in Southeast Asia. It also tells you the Philippines kept the score tight for 65 minutes after going behind, which is more than Pakistan managed against Thailand.

So Pakistan should not treat Tuesday as an easy game. It is the most even match in their group, and that is about all you can say for sure.

Pakistan are bottom of Group B after the first round

Thailand and Vietnam lead Group B with three points each. The Philippines and Pakistan have none. Pakistan are fourth because a 4-0 defeat leaves them with a goal difference of minus four, three worse than the Philippines.

The order in this table uses goal difference only as a simple guide. FIFA's rules put head-to-head results first when teams finish level on points, and that only matters once the group is complete.

Pakistan need to beat the Philippines to stay in the race

Only the Group B winner reaches the final, and the runner-up plays for third place. Two wins would give Pakistan six points and at least second place in almost every case. A defeat on Tuesday would leave them relying on a tie-break.

FIFA's regulations for the tournament set out the tie-break. If teams finish level on points, the first test is points in the games between those teams, then goal difference in those games, then goals scored in them. Overall goal difference comes only after that, then goals scored, then a fair play score based on cards.

That order helps Pakistan in one way and hurts them in another. Beating a rival counts for more than the 4-0 against Thailand. But Thailand already hold the head-to-head over Pakistan.

Here is how the maths works, applying FIFA's rules to the four results still possible for Pakistan:

1. Beat the Philippines and Vietnam: Pakistan reach six points and finish at least second, unless Thailand and Vietnam also finish on six, when goal difference between the three teams decides.
2. Win both, and Thailand fail to win either of their last two games: Pakistan top the group and play in the final.
3. Draw one and win the other: four points, and Pakistan need Thailand or Vietnam to drop points elsewhere.
4. Lose to the Philippines: Pakistan can reach three points at most, and only a tie-break could lift them to second.

The realistic target is second place and a third-place match. That would still mean a fourth game on Monday 5 October, which is more than most people expected for a guest team.

Pakistan's last group game is against Vietnam on 2 October

Pakistan play Vietnam on Friday 2 October at 2:00 pm PKT at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta. Thailand play the Philippines at the same time in Bandung, so the final round is played side by side.

Tuesday evening's Thailand against Vietnam game matters to Pakistan too. A Vietnam win would keep Thailand on three points, which is the only way Pakistan could still top the group.
