Short answer: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned in its 10:30 am forecast on Tuesday 13 October 2026 that moderate to isolated heavy rain in Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Abbottabad, Murree, Galiyat, Neelum and Muzaffarabad may cause landslides. Rain, wind and thunderstorms are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday across the north and upper and central Punjab.

We read the PMD's daily forecast page on 13 October 2026. This warning is new. It names more districts than the PMD's earlier landslide warning for Murree, Naran and Hunza, which ran from 10 to 13 October. You can read that one in our report on the PMD landslide warning for Murree, Naran and Hunza.

The PMD names ten upper districts for landslide risk

The PMD says moderate to isolated heavy rain in Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Buner, Abbottabad, Murree, Galiyat, Neelum and surrounding areas may cause landslides. Muzaffarabad is also on the list. A landslide is a slope of earth or rock that slides down, often onto a road or house.

The warning does not give a time window or a rainfall amount. It also does not say which roads may close. The PMD describes the risk as "may cause", which is a warning, not a report of landslides that have already happened.

Rain, wind and thunderstorms are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday

The PMD expects rain, wind and thunderstorms in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad and upper and central Punjab on Tuesday and Wednesday. Isolated hailstorms are also likely. Sindh and lower Balochistan stay mostly dry.

For Wednesday 14 October, the PMD says the upper parts stay partly cloudy, with more rain, wind and thunderstorms likely in the north and in central Punjab. The south stays hot and dry.

NDMA also issued an advisory for rain and hail from 10 to 15 October. See the details in the report on the NDMA rain and hail alert.

Temperatures stay mild in the plains and cool in the hills

The PMD forecasts Lahore at 26 to 28 degrees Celsius on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Islamabad is at 27 to 29 on Tuesday and 26 to 28 on Wednesday. Karachi stays hot at 34 to 36.

Lahore26 to 2826 to 28
Karachi34 to 3634 to 36
Peshawar28 to 3027 to 29

These are the PMD's figures in degrees Celsius. The morning of 13 October was cooler in the hills. Murree recorded 11 degrees and Gilgit 14 degrees.

What to do if you live or travel in the named districts

If you are in one of the named districts, do not wait for a second warning. Slopes loosen quickly in rain, and landslides can come without notice. Follow the steps below.

  1. Check the road status with the local district administration before you leave.
  2. Do not travel on hill roads during heavy rain or at night.
  3. Do not park or stop under steep slopes or loose rock.
  4. Move away from houses built on or below a steep bank if cracks appear.
  5. Call Rescue 1122 or the NDMA helpline 051-111-157-157 if you need help.
Five steps to stay safe in the districts under a PMD landslide warning

Warning signs are worth knowing. New cracks in the ground or a wall, a tilting tree or pole, small stones rolling down a slope and muddy water in a stream can all mean a slope is moving. Leave the area at once if you see them. Do not go back to collect belongings until the local administration says it is safe. Families with children or older relatives should move early, because they need more time to walk out.

We could not check live road closures on 13 October. The guide to getting NDMA alerts, the helpline and the app shows where to find official updates. For what the emergency service does, see what Rescue 1122 actually does.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 13 October 2026, about 2 pm Pakistan time. We read the PMD's daily forecast page, issued at 10:30 am on 13 October, for the warning, the storm areas and the temperatures. The morning temperatures for Murree and Gilgit come from the PMD's early bulletin of the same day. The helpline number comes from NDMA's page as recorded in our earlier guide. We did not test it. The PMD gives no end date for the landslide warning, so check the page again for updates.
