Short answer: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a weather advisory on 9 October 2026. It warns of rain, wind, thunderstorms and isolated hail from Saturday 10 October to Thursday 15 October. Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Peshawar and much of Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are on the list. Sindh and most of Balochistan stay hot and dry.

We read the full eight page advisory on NDMA's own site. It is based on a forecast from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), which says a westerly wave enters the upper parts of the country from Saturday. A westerly wave is a weather system that moves in from the west and brings cloud, rain and cooler air.

NDMA expects storms and hail across upper Pakistan until 15 October

NDMA's advisory dated 9 October 2026 says rain, wind and thunderstorms, with hail in isolated places, will hit upper and central Pakistan from 10 to 15 October. The rain will come in spells with gaps. The main rain days in Punjab and Islamabad are 10, 11, 13 and 14 October.

The advisory is signed by NDMA's Acting Director (Response) and marked "most immediate". It went to every provincial disaster authority, the provincial chief secretaries, the National Highway Authority, WAPDA and the dam authorities.

This is the second advisory in a week. NDMA issued one on 5 October for the rain and hail of 6 and 7 October in Lahore and Islamabad. The new one runs longer and names more districts.

Lahore and 22 other Punjab places are named for 10, 11, 13 and 14 October

In Punjab, NDMA names 23 places for rain and possible hail on 10, 11, 13 and 14 October. Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Sialkot are among them. Nine southern districts, including Multan and Bahawalpur, get rain on 10, 11 and 13 October only.

Here is how the advisory splits the country. We copied the place names as NDMA wrote them.

SindhNone; mainly hot and dryNo rain expected

PMD's daily forecast, issued at 5:30 pm on 9 October, fits this. It expects storms in Lahore, Kasur, Faisalabad, Multan and other Punjab districts on Saturday evening and night, with hail in isolated places. So the first spell in the plains is likely after dark, not during the day.

Hail can damage roofs, solar panels, cars and standing crops

NDMA warns that wind, hail and lightning may damage kacha roofs and walls, electric poles, billboards, vehicles and solar panels. Hail may also damage standing crops in the plains of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Light snow is expected on high mountains and glaciers.

Kacha houses are homes built of mud or unfired brick. Their roofs are the first to go in a strong storm. If you live in one, the advisory says to move to a concrete building, such as a school or government building, during heavy rain.

Farmers are told to plan crop work around the weather and to look after livestock. This lands in the middle of wheat sowing, so a hailstorm on a freshly sown or ready field is a real cost. If a crop financed by a bank loan is damaged, the claim route is set out in getting a crop loan insurance claim after hail.

Day temperatures will drop by 2 to 4 degrees

NDMA says day temperatures are likely to fall by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius during the forecast period. That is a welcome break in Punjab, where PMD gave Lahore a high of 33 to 35 degrees on Saturday and Faisalabad 34 to 36.

Sindh gets no relief. PMD expects Dadu at 42 to 44 degrees and Nawabshah at 41 to 43 on Saturday, with dry weather across most of the province.

Rain also matters for Lahore's air. Lahore's AQI on 9 October was in the "unhealthy for sensitive groups" band on Friday evening. Rain washes dust and smoke out of the air, so a wet weekend could bring some relief. We will not promise it, because a short storm often clears the air for only a day.

What to do when hail or a thunderstorm starts

NDMA's advice is to get indoors fast, stay away from glass and keep off the road in heavy hail. Do not shelter under trees or poles during lightning, and keep away from drains and ponds. The steps below come from the advisory, in the order you will need them.

  1. Go inside a strong building or a car as soon as hail starts.
  2. Stay away from windows. Hail can break glass, so a room without windows is safest.
  3. If you are caught outside, cover your head and neck with a bag, jacket or helmet.
  4. If you are driving, pull over under a bridge or roof, or off the road, and stay in the car with your seat belt on.
  5. Do not stand under trees or electric poles, and keep off open fields and hilltops in lightning.
  6. Do not use wired appliances during the storm, and do not touch or repair any electrical equipment with exposed wires.
  7. Cover cars, motorbikes and outdoor equipment with a tarp or blanket if there is time.
  8. Wait for the all clear before going out again.

This monsoon, electrocution killed more Pakistanis than drowning. Keep children away from wet poles and fallen wires.

Tourists heading north are told to plan around the rain

NDMA tells tourists to check the weather and traffic before driving to hill stations, to avoid hiking or camping in heavy rain, and to stay at least 20 feet from rivers and nullahs. It also asks them to choose hotels on higher ground, away from water.

The advisory warns against self driving on unfamiliar hilly roads in the rain. It suggests a local driver who knows the terrain. It also says just 6 inches of moving water can knock a person off their feet, so never walk or drive through a flooded road.

PMD has separately warned of possible landslides at Murree, Naran, Kalam, Gilgit and Hunza over the same days, which we covered in PMD's landslide warning for the northern tourist spots.

Common questions

Will it rain in Lahore this weekend?

NDMA names Lahore for rain, wind and possible hail on 10, 11, 13 and 14 October. PMD expects the first storms on Saturday evening or night. Rain will come in spells, not all day.

Will it rain in Karachi?

No. NDMA says Sindh will stay mainly hot and dry. PMD expects only partly cloudy weather in Karachi on Saturday, with a high of 31 to 33 degrees.

When will the rain stop?

NDMA expects the westerly wave to last until 15 October. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan may get rain on every day from 10 to 15 October. Punjab's last named day is 14 October.

Is hail certain in my area?

No. NDMA says hail is expected only at isolated places. That means a few pockets will get it and most will not. Treat it as a risk, not a certainty.

Where can I check the latest forecast?

On PMD's official site, weather.gov.pk, which updates the daily forecast twice a day. We explain each page in where to get the official weather forecast in Pakistan.
