Short answer: SBP says a bank must work out savings profit on your average monthly balance and credit it within seven working days after the profit period ends. It must also send a free statement once or twice a year. If either is late, ask the bank in writing and complain if it stays silent.

Savings profit arrives quietly, a few lines on a statement. Most people never count the days. A late credit costs little once, but across a year and many accounts it adds up, and the rule exists so you can ask.

We read the State Bank of Pakistan's Business Conduct and Fair Treatment of Consumers Regulatory Framework on 11 October 2026. This guide covers its profit and statement rules, the dates to check, and what to do when your bank misses them.

Profit must be credited within seven working days

Section 3.2.1 of the framework says banks must apply the profit rate on the average monthly balance of saving deposits. They must credit the profit to your account within seven working days once the profit period ends.

The framework gives the rule in one line, so it does not say what the profit period is. That is set by your bank's terms and conditions, and many banks pay monthly or half yearly. The bank must state the frequency in the terms it gives you when you open the account.

ItemWhat the framework says
Base for profitAverage monthly balance of saving deposits
Credit deadlineWithin 7 working days after the profit period ends
FrequencyMust be disclosed in the terms and conditions
Method of calculationMust be disclosed in the terms and conditions
Delay in relief after a complaintBank must compensate for the period of delay

You can check the rate against what banks currently pay

Before you chase a missing credit, work out what you should have received. Take your average balance for the month, apply your bank's published rate, and divide by the days in the year. Compare the rate with the savings profit rates banks pay in October 2026.

Rates change when the policy rate changes, and banks must give you at least 30 days' notice before a change in profit or charges, with an exception for changes forced by a law or SBP instruction. If the rate fell without notice, say so in your complaint.

Free statements arrive on fixed dates

The framework says banks must send a free statement of account to depositors. Balances of Rs 50,000 or more on average get it twice a year, by 31 July and 31 January. Balances below that get it once a year, by 31 January. Simplified due diligence accounts get it once a year.

You choose paper or digital delivery. Digital banks and e-money institutions always deliver digitally. If your bank also lets you download a statement from the app, see how to get a bank statement online in Pakistan.

What a statement must show for each transaction

The framework says a statement must show the opening and closing balance, the amount and date of each credit or debit, any cheque number, the other party for card or automatic payments, any fee, and the contact details for reporting errors.

Use that list as a checklist. A line with no date, or a fee with no label, is a reason to write to the bank. A bank may not give your statement to an unauthorised person and may not send one to a dormant account until it is reactivated.

How to chase a late profit credit or missing statement

Note the date the profit period ended, count seven working days, then write to the bank's complaint unit with your account details and ask for the credit or the statement. Keep the tracking number and escalate through SBP if there is no reply.

  1. Find the profit period and rate in your account terms or Key Facts Statement.
  2. Count seven working days from the end of the period.
  3. Write to the complaint unit, state the date and amount you expect, and ask for a tracking number.
  4. Expect an acknowledgement within 48 hours, and a reply within 3 to 7 working days for a small issue.
  5. Use SBP Sunwai if the bank misses its own deadline.

The 3 and 7 working day targets for non-fraud complaints come from SBP's complaint handling rules, and the full complaint deadlines are listed separately.

Common questions

How soon must my bank credit savings profit?

Within seven working days once the profit period ends, according to SBP's framework. The framework does not fix the period itself, so check whether your account pays monthly, quarterly or half yearly.

On what balance is savings profit calculated?

On the average monthly balance of your saving deposits. A balance that drops late in the month does not wipe out profit earned earlier, because the average is used.

Do I have to pay for a bank statement?

Not for the scheduled ones. Banks must send a free statement once or twice a year. A duplicate copy on request can carry a minimal fee.

What if my bank never sends the statement?

Ask for it in writing. The framework says banks must try to update your address or email when a statement is returned undelivered. Ask the bank to confirm which address it holds.

Does a dormant account earn a statement?

Not until you reactivate it. The framework says banks must then provide statements from the date the account was marked dormant. Learn how to wake it in how to reactivate a dormant account.

Can the bank change the profit rate without telling me?

No. It must give 30 days' notice of changes in terms, including profit and charges, unless the change is forced by a law or an SBP instruction, in which case notice is immediate.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read SBP's BPRD Circular No. 04 of 2025 and the framework, sections 2.3, 2.5, 3.2.1 and 5.1, on sbp.org.pk on 11 October 2026. We did not check any bank's actual profit credit dates. Profit rates and frequencies are set by each bank, so confirm yours with the bank.
