Upwork Identity Verification in Pakistan: CNIC, Video Call and Every Fix for a Failed Check

Upwork identity verification in Pakistan works with your original CNIC, passport or driving licence: open the link in Upwork's email on a computer, scan the QR code with your phone, photograph the ID and finish within seven days. Miss the seven days and Upwork puts a hold on your account. Below are the documents it accepts, the photo rules that cause most rejections, how long a review takes, and what to do when the check fails.
We read four Upwork help pages on identity verification on 27 October 2026. Upwork names the "National ID card (NIC/CNIC)" directly in its list of accepted documents, so a Pakistani CNIC is a valid first choice.
Upwork accepts a CNIC, passport or driving licence
Upwork accepts any valid government photo ID showing your picture, signature, name, date of birth and address. A passport does not need the address. It rejects student, employee and library cards, photocopies, temporary and handwritten IDs, military and health cards, and anything expired.

If your card has expired, Upwork will not take it. Start the expired CNIC renewal before you apply for jobs, because the seven day clock does not wait for NADRA.
If you have no accepted ID, or Upwork asks for more proof, its government ID page lists extras: a utility bill, a bank or credit card statement, tax registration papers, college enrolment papers, a long-term visa or a residence permit.
Verify in six steps, on a computer and a phone
Upwork sends an email when verification is due. The link stays active for 30 days, but you must finish within seven days or your account goes on hold. Start on a computer and switch to your phone camera when Upwork asks.
- Open the most recent verification email from Upwork. If you received several, only the latest one counts.
- Start the process on your computer and keep a phone with a working camera nearby.
- Scan the QR code with your phone when the screen shows it.
- Allow camera access in your phone browser. On Chrome for Android, tap the three dots, then Settings, Site settings, Camera.
- Photograph your ID and, if asked, take a selfie or join a short video call.
- Wait for the result by email. Most checks finish within minutes.
Your Upwork profile photo must clearly show you as you look today, because Upwork compares it with the ID. An old photo, a logo or a cartoon avatar invites a failed check.
Photo rules that stop most rejections
Upwork wants a clear, unedited, full colour picture with all four corners of the ID visible. Lay the card flat, shoot from directly above in natural light without flash, and do not crop, rotate or filter the image. Files must be PNG, JPEG, PDF or BMP.
- No glare. A CNIC has a shiny surface. Daylight from a window works better than a ceiling bulb.
- Leave margins. All four corners must show, with space around the card.
- Quality. Upwork asks for at least 200 dpi. Use the phone camera directly, not a forwarded WhatsApp copy, which is compressed.
- Both sides when needed. Upwork asks for the back when key details sit there. On a CNIC the address is on the back, so keep that side ready.
Your name and country must match everywhere
Upwork says the country on your ID must match your profile country, and the name on your ID becomes your verified name. That name must then match your withdrawal account and tax form, so one spelling has to run through all three.
Pakistani names often change order between documents. If your CNIC says one thing and your bank account another, fix the bank side before you add it to Upwork. For a name mismatch inside Upwork, its help page says to contact support.
For an address check, Upwork may ask for a bank statement, credit card statement or utility bill dated within the last six months. The name must match your verified name and the address must match your Upwork profile. Most banks let you download a bank statement online from their app.
If you live in one country with an ID from another, Upwork adds a location check. You can change your profile country to match your ID, or upload a document proving you live where your profile says.
Review takes minutes, or three to five business days
Upwork says most people are verified within minutes. When the system cannot decide, a person reviews it manually, which typically takes three to five business days. The ID and address check can take up to 48 hours.

Do not panic if Upwork asks again later. Its pages say re-verification happens periodically and does not mean something is wrong.
Skipping verification freezes proposals and withdrawals
If you do not verify, Upwork says you cannot send proposals, accept direct offers or withdraw earnings. Your profile may turn private, active proposals are deleted without refunding Connects, and your account may be suspended.
The lost Connects hurt. Each one costs money, as the Upwork Connects price in Pakistan shows. Verify before you send a batch of proposals, not after.
When the process stalls or times out, Upwork suggests clearing your browser cache and cookies, checking all four corners are visible, and trying a different browser or device. Also close any app using the camera and restart the phone.
A warning: Upwork verifies identity through its own site and emails. Never send your CNIC photo to anyone on WhatsApp who claims to be "Upwork support". A CNIC picture in the wrong hands can be used to open fake online accounts in your name.
