How to Verify an App Is Official Before You Install It in Pakistan

Spot a fake bank, wallet or NADRA app before you install it. Check the developer, downloads and package name, with the real details we read on 9 October 2026.

Before you install a bank, wallet or government app in Pakistan, check three things on the Play Store page: the developer name, the download count and the package name in the web address. NADRA's Pak Identity app, for example, is published by "National Database & Registration Authority" and has 10M+ downloads. If any of the three looks wrong, do not install it.

Fake apps copy the logo, the colours and even the screenshots of real ones. What they cannot copy is the developer account. A fake JazzCash app is not published by JazzCash. A fake NADRA app is not published by NADRA. That one line on the store page does most of the work, and it takes ten seconds to read.

We opened the Google Play listings of four widely used Pakistani apps on 9 October 2026 and noted exactly what each shows. Use them as a model for any app you are about to trust with your money or your CNIC.

Check these four things before you tap Install

Read the developer name under the app title, the download count, the review count, and the package name in the page address. A real national app has the organisation's own name as developer and millions of downloads. A copy usually has an odd developer name and few downloads.

Five checks to confirm an app is the official one before installing it in Pakistan
  1. Developer name. It sits right under the app name. It should be the bank, wallet or government body itself.
  2. Downloads. A national app used by millions shows 1M+ or more. A copy rarely does.
  3. Reviews. Look at the number of reviews, not just the stars. Thousands of reviews are hard to fake.
  4. Package name. On a computer, the Play Store address ends in id= followed by the package name. It should match the one the organisation uses.
  5. Developer contact. Scroll to App support. Google says every developer must show a verified email, and organisations must also show a verified phone number.

The fifth check comes from Google's Play Console Help page on developer verification. It says the legal name, address and developer email are shown on Google Play so users can learn who made the app. A bank's email should end in the bank's own domain, not a free email service.

What the real listings showed when we checked

On 9 October 2026, Pak Identity listed National Database & Registration Authority as developer, 10M+ downloads and a Government label. Pakistan Citizen Portal listed National IT Board, Government Of Pakistan. Easypaisa listed Easypaisa Bank Limited and JazzCash listed JazzCash, both with 100M+ downloads.

Developer names and download counts of four official Pakistani apps on Google Play

Two of them, Pak Identity and Pakistan Citizen Portal, also carried a small Government label next to the rating. Google's policy page for government apps says developers must declare government links in Play Console, and Google works with agencies to check them. Not every real government app may show the label, so treat it as a plus, not a test.

Notice the easypaisa package name still starts with "telenor". That is normal. A package name is fixed when an app is first published, so old names stay even after a company is renamed. It is one more reason to copy a link from the official website rather than guess.

The safest way to install is to open the organisation's own website, find its app link there, and follow it to the store. Never install from a link sent by SMS, WhatsApp, Facebook or a caller. Scammers send links to copies on purpose.

Government bodies in Pakistan use addresses ending in .gov.pk. Banks use their own domain. If a message says "download the new NADRA app" or "update your wallet app from this link", close it. Open the Play Store yourself and search, then run the checks above.

Be most careful with APK files. An APK is an Android app file installed from outside the Play Store. Fake loan apps, fake prize apps and "GB" versions of WhatsApp are usually spread this way. The steps for checking Google Play Protect and app permissions show how to see what an installed app is allowed to do.

Signs an app is a copy

A copy usually has a developer name that is not the organisation, a few thousand downloads or fewer, very new reviews, spelling mistakes in the description, and permissions it has no reason to need. Any one of these is a reason to stop. Two together mean it is almost certainly fake.

Warning signWhy it matters
Developer is a person's name or a random brandThe real app is published by the organisation
Low downloads for a "national" appReal wallet and NADRA apps have millions
Words like "pro", "new", "2026" or "update" in the titleReal apps rarely add these
Asks for SMS or accessibility access at onceLets it read your OTP codes or control the phone
Link came in a messageThe way most fakes spread

Google's Misleading Claims policy does not allow apps that falsely claim a link with a government body. So when you find one, report it. Copies still slip through, which is why the developer check matters more than the store's own screening.

If you already installed a fake app

Turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi, uninstall the app, and change your wallet MPIN and bank passwords from a different, safe phone. If money has gone, call your bank or wallet helpline at once and file a complaint, because the first hours matter most for blocking a transfer.

  1. Disconnect the phone from the internet.
  2. Uninstall the app. If Android will not let you, check whether it has device admin rights in Settings and remove them.
  3. Run a Play Protect scan.
  4. Change your wallet MPIN, bank app password and email password.
  5. Call your bank or wallet's own helpline from the number on its website or card.

After that, report fraud on your bank's mobile app in writing, and escalate to the State Bank if the bank does not answer. For a wallet transfer you did not make, the steps to get your money back from Easypaisa or JazzCash cover the complaint and the regulator's time limits.

Common questions

How do I know an app is official on the Play Store?

Check that the developer name under the title is the organisation itself, the downloads are in the millions for a national app, and you reached the listing from the organisation's own website.

Who is the developer of the real NADRA Pak ID app?

On 9 October 2026, the Play Store listing for Pak Identity showed National Database & Registration Authority as developer, with 10M+ downloads and the package name pk.gov.nadra.pakid.

Is it safe to install an APK sent on WhatsApp?

No. Apps sent as APK files skip the Play Store's checks. Fake loan, prize and banking apps often spread this way. Install only from the Play Store or App Store.

What does the Government label on Google Play mean?

Google says developers must declare government links and that it works with agencies to verify them. The label is a good sign, but still check the developer name.

What should I do if I installed a fake banking app?

Go offline, uninstall it, change your PINs and passwords from another phone, and call your bank's official helpline at once.

Can a fake app have good ratings?

Yes, ratings can be faked in small numbers. Millions of downloads and hundreds of thousands of reviews are much harder to fake, so look at the counts.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 9 October 2026. We opened the Google Play listings for Pak Identity, Pakistan Citizen Portal, easypaisa and JazzCash on that date and recorded the developer names, download counts and package names shown. Google's policy sources: Play Console Help pages Requirements for apps that communicate government information and "Verify your developer identity information". Download counts change over time, and we did not check the Apple App Store listings.
