You can check a Gilgit-Baltistan vehicle registration for free on the GB Excise and Taxation Department's vehicle verification portal. You need three things: the district where it was registered, the registration number and the exact registration date. Goods and passenger vehicles can also be checked for a route permit on the same portal.

We ran searches on the portal on 3 October 2026. Both the vehicle search and the route permit search returned answers within seconds, and the route permit search showed a full record for a sample permit. A wrong date or a mistyped number gives a flat "No vehicle record found". That is not proof the car is illegal, but it is a reason to slow down.

Buying a used car in Gilgit, Skardu or Hunza without this check is a gamble. The department lists "a check on the activities of car smuggling mafias" among its own functions, and it has run crackdowns on vehicles with fake registration marks and tampered chassis numbers. Those vehicles are confiscated, whoever owns them now.

What the GB vehicle verification portal checks

The portal looks up a registration in the department's MVRTMS database, its computerised motor vehicle record. It confirms the vehicle is on the record for that district, number and date. The department says it is for verification only, so it is not a transfer or ownership certificate.

The page is titled "Vehicle and Route Permit Verification Portal" and has two searches. The vehicle search confirms a registration. The route permit search shows whether a commercial vehicle's permit is valid or expired.

What the Gilgit-Baltistan vehicle and route permit verification portal checks

Ten districts appear in the vehicle search list. The route permit list has nine, because Shigar is not on it. A vehicle registered in Shigar may still have its permit under another district, so try the neighbouring district if the first search finds nothing.

How to verify a vehicle in Gilgit-Baltistan online

Open the vehicle search, pick the registration district, type the number exactly as it is on the registration book, and enter the registration date. If the record exists, the portal shows it. If any field is wrong, it says no record was found.

  1. Ask the seller for the registration book, or a clear photo of it, before you agree a price.
  2. Open gbexcise.gov.pk and click Vehicle Search, or go straight to the verification page.
  3. Choose the district of registration from the list, such as Gilgit or Skardu.
  4. Type the registration number with its letters and hyphen, such as GLT-1222.
  5. Enter the registration date from the book and press Search Vehicle.

The date is the field that catches people. It must be the original registration date, not the date the seller bought the car or the date of the last transfer. The portal's own examples show the number styles in use, including AA-103, GLT-1222, GLTA-1222, BLN-12222 and DMR-12.

Then match what you see against the metal in front of you. The chassis and engine numbers stamped on the car must match the registration book. The portal confirms the paperwork, but only your own eyes on the car confirm the car is the one in the papers.

How to check a route permit in Gilgit-Baltistan

The route permit search needs only the district and either the vehicle number or the permit number. A found record shows the status, permit serial, owner's name, a masked CNIC, the vehicle class, the route, the expiry date and the renewal date, with a print option.

This matters for anyone buying a truck, a coaster or a taxi, and for anyone hiring one for a long trip. A permit marked EXPIRED means the vehicle should not be carrying goods or passengers for hire on that route until it is renewed.

We tested it with the sample permit number shown on the search page, 4847, in Gilgit district. It returned a goods truck with a laden weight of 30,000 kg on a goods transport route, with the status EXPIRED. The page says validity is calculated from the expiry date.

One small trap: the example vehicle number printed on the same page, GILTA-1549, returned nothing. The record is stored as GLTA-1549. So type the number exactly as the registration book shows it, not as you would say it aloud.

What to do when no record is found

First check your typing: district, number with the right letters, and the exact registration date. If it still fails, call or visit the Excise and Taxation Office for that district before you pay anything. Do not hand over money on a promise that the record will appear later.

Some records may not be on the computer system yet. In November 2023 the department told the GB Finance Department it was computerising its record database, and the Finance Department asked it to finish during that financial year. We could not confirm from the department's website that every older file is now online. So a missing record can mean an old file that was never entered, a typing slip, or a real problem.

The office can tell you which. These are the numbers the department lists on its contact page:

OfficePhone
Deputy Director Excise, Gilgit05811-920990
Manager MIS (computer records)05811-920988
ETO Gilgit05811-920989
ETO Skardu05815-920990
ETO Ghizer05814-920990
ETO Diamer05812-920192
ETO Hunza-Nagar05811-990989

The head office is the Excise and Taxation Complex near the Commissioner Office in Jutial, Gilgit. The contact form on gbexcise.gov.pk also has a "Vehicle Registration" option for written queries.

If the car was registered outside GB, this portal will not find it. Use the home province's own system, listed in vehicle verification for every province, and plan the paperwork for transferring a vehicle from another province before you buy.

Why a clean GB vehicle record matters now

Your vehicle record is now linked to fuel relief. In Gilgit-Baltistan, the department runs the eligibility portal for the Prime Minister's fuel relief tokens. Registration by SMS asks for your vehicle number, the province code G and the registration date.

The subsidy portal at subsidy.gbexcise.gov.pk says the SIM must be registered on the same CNIC as the vehicle. For cars, the vehicle must be in the owner's name and the owner must be present when the token is used. A car still in the old owner's name will not qualify, which is one more reason to finish the transfer after you buy. The SMS format and token limits are set out in getting petrol relief with code 9771.

A clean record also protects you on the road. GB Excise staff have run road checks, and the department has said vehicles with fake registration marks or tampered chassis are confiscated under the GB seizure and disposal rules. If a car is ever stolen, a verified record also makes it easier to report a stolen car and prove it is yours.

Common questions

Is the Gilgit-Baltistan vehicle verification free?

Yes. The portal on gbexcise.gov.pk asked for no payment and no login when we used it on 3 October 2026.

Why does the GB portal say no vehicle record found?

Usually one field is wrong: the district, a letter in the number, or the registration date. If all three are right, ask the district Excise and Taxation Office, because some older records may not be computerised.

Can I check a GB vehicle without the registration date?

No. The vehicle search will not run without the registration date, and it must match the record. The route permit search does not need a date.

Does the portal show the owner's name?

The route permit search shows the owner's name and a masked CNIC. Treat it as a check, not as proof of ownership; the department says the portal is for verification only.

Can I verify a Punjab or Islamabad car on the GB portal?

No. It covers only vehicles registered in the ten GB districts. Cars from other provinces are checked on their own province's system.

What does an expired route permit mean?

The permit is past its expiry date and has not been renewed. The vehicle should not carry goods or passengers for hire on that route until the permit is renewed.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 3 October 2026. The vehicle and route permit searches, the ten district list, the number examples, the "no vehicle record found" message, the MVRTMS database and the verification-only disclaimer are read on the Gilgit-Baltistan Excise and Taxation Department's verification portal at gbexcise.gov.pk, where we ran test searches. The sample route permit result was returned by the same portal; we do not publish the owner's details. The department's functions, its crackdown on fake registration marks and tampered chassis, the November 2023 computerisation note and the office phone numbers are read on gbexcise.gov.pk. The fuel relief eligibility rules for GB, including province code G, are read on subsidy.gbexcise.gov.pk. Transfer fees and registration fees in GB are not covered here, because the department does not publish a fee schedule on its website.
