Check Any Vehicle in Pakistan: The Working Portal for Every Province

Before you buy a used car in Pakistan, you check the vehicle record. The problem is that half the addresses being shared for that do not exist.

We opened every provincial vehicle portal we could identify. Five work. Five widely circulated addresses do not resolve at all. And one region appears to have no portal we could find.

The addresses that work

The one that matters most is the first: you check the province where the vehicle is registered, not the one you live in. A Karachi number plate is not on Punjab's system, however convenient that would be.

Five addresses that do not exist

Each of these is shared in guides, forums and forwarded messages. None of them resolve.

• mtmis.punjab.gov.pk, the most widely shared vehicle verification address in Pakistan
• mtmis.sindh.gov.pk
• mtmis.kpexcise.gov.pk
• excise.ict.gov.pk and mtmis.ict.gov.pk for Islamabad

The pattern is the same everywhere: someone assumed the portal would live at an obvious address, that address got copied, and it kept being copied long after it turned out not to be real.

One more caution. For Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, excise.kp.gov.pk returned a near empty response and then failed on a second attempt. We would not rely on it. kpexcise.gov.pk returned a full page consistently and is the one we would use.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir

We could not find a working online vehicle verification portal for AJK.

We are saying that rather than quietly leaving the region off the list. It does not mean none exists, only that we could not reach one. For an AJK-registered vehicle, the excise office is the route, and that is worth knowing before you plan around an online check.

What to actually check before buying

1. Use the right province's portal. Registration province, not your own.
2. Match the engine and chassis numbers against the vehicle, physically, not against the documents the seller hands you. This is the check that catches the serious problems.
3. Match the owner name to the seller's CNIC. If they differ, ask why before anything else.
4. Ask about outstanding token tax. Unpaid dues follow the vehicle, not the person who ran them up.
5. Note the year of first registration, not the model year the seller quotes.

If the record and the metal disagree on the engine or chassis number, stop. That is not paperwork to tidy up later.

What a portal check will not tell you

Being clear about the limits matters as much as the addresses, because people treat a clean record as a clean car.

• It is not an accident history. Pakistan has no equivalent of a full vehicle history report, so a rebuilt write-off can show a perfectly normal record.
• It is not proof the car is not stolen. A clean record is useful, but a mismatch between the record and the engine or chassis number is the real signal, and that only appears if you physically check.
• It does not value the vehicle or tell you what it should cost.
• It reflects the record, not reality. If a previous transfer was never filed, the portal still shows an earlier owner, and that is precisely the situation you want to find before paying rather than after.

The last point is the common one. A seller who is not the registered owner is not automatically a fraud, but you need to know who is, and why, and you need it resolved before money moves.

If a search returns nothing

It is usually the format, not the car. Punjab's portal tells you so itself, suggesting combinations like lxz 123, lxz 0123, lxz 1111 and lxz-07-1111. Work through the variants before concluding a vehicle is unregistered.

Why we tested this

We found the dead Punjab address while correcting our own guide, which had been sending readers to it. That raised an obvious question about the other provinces, and the answer turned out to be that most of the commonly shared addresses are wrong too.

This is the fourth time this exercise has produced something. The others are forty government websites tested and every electricity company's site tested.

As always: one machine, one day, automated requests. A portal that answered us may be down when you try, and one that failed may work.
