You can wash most puffer jackets at home: close every zip, wash on a gentle cycle in cold water with a small amount of mild liquid detergent, rinse twice, spin on low, and dry it slowly while breaking up the clumps of filling every hour. Read the care label first. If it shows a crossed tub, do not wash it at home. A puffer that dries in a heap or stays damp inside will smell and go flat, so the drying matters more than the washing.

Puffer jackets are now the standard winter coat in Pakistan, from school children in Islamabad to riders on Lahore's morning roads. A dry cleaner may charge a good sum for one, and many cleaners handle them roughly. A careful wash at home is cheaper and often kinder to the filling.

Seven steps to wash a puffer jacket at home

Check the filling and the care label first

Puffers are filled with either down (duck or goose feathers) or a synthetic fibre such as polyester. The label tells you which, and how to clean it. Synthetic filling is easier to wash and dries faster. Down needs more patience in drying but can usually be washed too.

A tub with a number means machine washing is allowed up to that temperature. A hand in the tub means hand wash only. A circle with a letter is a sign for dry cleaners. Puffers with fur trims, leather patches or a "do not wash" tub belong at a professional cleaner.

Wash a puffer jacket in a machine in seven steps

Use a front-loading machine if you can, on a gentle, wool or delicate cycle in cold water. Close zips, empty pockets, use only a small amount of liquid detergent, and add an extra rinse. Then spin on the lowest setting.

  1. Prepare it. Empty every pocket, close all zips and press studs, and remove a detachable hood or fur trim.
  2. Spot clean first. Rub a little liquid detergent on the collar and cuffs with a soft brush. These carry most of the dirt.
  3. Wash it alone. One jacket per load, so it can move freely.
  4. Choose gentle and cold. A wool or delicate cycle at 30 degrees at most.
  5. Go light on detergent. About half a normal dose of mild liquid. Never powder, bleach or fabric softener, which coat the filling.
  6. Rinse twice. Leftover soap makes the filling stick together.
  7. Spin on low. A high spin can tear the inner baffles that hold the filling in place.

Top-loading machines with a central pole (agitator) twist and rub a puffer hard. If that is your machine, hand washing is safer.

Down and synthetic puffer filling compared for washing and drying

Hand wash a puffer in a tub or bucket

Hand washing works well in homes with semi-automatic machines. Soak the closed jacket in cold water with a little mild liquid detergent, press it gently, rinse in clean water twice, and press out the water. Never wring or twist it.

  • Fill a large tub or bath with cold water and dissolve the detergent before adding the jacket.
  • Push the jacket under and press it gently with your palms for a few minutes. Puffers float, so keep pushing them down.
  • Soak for 15 to 20 minutes, then press again around the collar and cuffs.
  • Drain, refill with clean water and press again. Repeat until no foam appears.
  • Roll the jacket in a big towel and press to take out more water.

The spin basket of a semi-automatic machine can be used for a short, low spin after hand washing. Keep it to a minute or two.

Dry a puffer properly, even without a dryer

Drying is where puffers are saved or ruined. With a tumble dryer, use low heat and add two or three clean tennis balls to break up the filling. Without one, which is most Pakistani homes, lay it flat or hang it in an airy shaded place and shake and squeeze the panels every hour.

  1. Lay the jacket flat on a clean drying rack, or hang it on a wide plastic hanger.
  2. Keep it in shade with good air, under a fan if possible. Strong rooftop sun can fade the shell.
  3. Every hour or two, pat the panels, squeeze the clumps apart with your fingers and turn the jacket over.
  4. Keep going until no clumps remain and the filling feels evenly light, not just the outer shell.
  5. Bring it indoors at night. Cold, damp winter nights slow drying and can leave a musty smell.

Down can take one to two days to dry fully in open air in November. Do not put it on a heater, iron it, or hang it right next to a gas heater. The shell is often nylon, which melts at a heat that wool would survive.

If the jacket smells damp after drying, the filling is still wet inside. Keep drying. A quick fix is to wear it only once it smells clean.

How often to wash and how to store it

Most puffers need a full wash only once or twice a season. Spot clean the collar and cuffs in between, air the jacket after wear, and wash it fully before storing it for the summer. Store it hanging or loosely folded, never squashed in a vacuum bag for months.

Frequent washing wears out the filling and the water-resistant coating. Wipe mud off with a damp cloth, and hang the jacket on a balcony for an hour after a smoky day to air it. In smog season, the outer shell picks up dust quickly, but a brush and a damp cloth often handle it.

For storage, make sure the jacket is completely dry. Put it in a breathable cotton cover in a cupboard away from damp walls. Squeezing a down jacket flat for months stops it puffing up again in winter. If you also have sweaters and shawls to put away, the steps to wash wool and cashmere at home cover moth protection too.

Common questions

Can I put a puffer jacket in the washing machine?

Yes, if the care label allows machine washing. Use a gentle cycle in cold water, a small amount of mild liquid detergent, an extra rinse and a low spin.

Why did my puffer go flat after washing?

The filling clumped while wet. Keep drying it and squeeze the clumps apart every hour until it is light and even again.

Can I use fabric softener on a puffer jacket?

No. Softener coats the filling and stops it fluffing up. Use only a mild liquid detergent.

How long does a puffer jacket take to dry without a dryer?

About a day for synthetic filling and one to two days for down, in shade with good air.

Can I iron a puffer jacket?

No. The shell is usually nylon or polyester, which can melt, and heat flattens the filling.

Should I dry clean a down jacket?

Only if the care label says so. Many down jackets are labelled for home washing, and harsh dry cleaning can strip the natural oils in down.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

This is a general home care guide written on 5 November 2026. The care label meanings follow the international care symbol system published by GINETEX (ginetex.net), which we read on 5 November 2026. The washing and drying steps are standard care practice for down and synthetic jackets, not a test we ran on a particular jacket. Always follow your jacket's own care label, which takes priority over anything here.
