A woman who works in Punjab and lives away from her home city can apply for a bed in a Women Development Department working women hostel. The department's FAQ lists a monthly rent from Rs 800 to Rs 1,500 a person in the major cities, before utilities. Apply through the department's hostel web portal or its mobile app.

The hostels are for women who work, not for students. Government employees get preference, but women in private jobs can apply too. This guide gives the rules, the fees, the cities and the steps, as the department lists them.

Check the five eligibility rules first

You can apply if you are a working woman, aged 18 or more, and you are not a resident of the city where the hostel stands. Government employees get preference. Students and children are not accommodated.

The department also asks for an employer verification certificate. It must include character verification and your job details, such as pay, posting and duty timings. Admission is first come, first served, subject to vacancies.

Each woman can stay for up to three years, according to the department's FAQ. After that the bed goes to the next applicant.

Know the fees before you apply

The department FAQ gives these fees for the major cities. Rent depends on how many women share the room. The fees leave out electricity, gas, water, telephone and internet, so budget for those on top.

ItemFee (major cities)
Admission fee (not refundable)Rs 1,000
Security deposit (refundable)Rs 5,000
Monthly rent, single roomRs 1,500
Monthly rent, double room, per personRs 1,000
Monthly rent, triple or four bed room, per personRs 800
Guest chargeRs 100 a day, up to 2 days a month

We read these figures on the department FAQ page on 8 October 2026. The page says "major cities", so rates in smaller cities may differ. Ask the hostel office for its own rate card before you pay.

Find the hostel in your city

The department runs hostels in Lahore (four), Rawalpindi (two), Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan, Sahiwal, Sargodha and Vehari. Its hostel page lists a street address for each.

The department's own pages count the cities slightly differently: one says 12 cities, another says 14 districts. We list the names exactly as they appear, and we could not read capacity or vacancy numbers for any hostel.

Choose the hostel nearest your workplace, because rules on timings and visitors are set by each hostel. Ask about gate times when you apply if you work night shifts. Our guide to women, night shifts and working hours explains the legal side of late work.

Before you pay anything, visit or call the hostel and ask three things. Is a bed free in your room type? What are the gate and visitor timings? How is the security deposit returned, and when? Keep every receipt, and ask for the rules in writing so there is no dispute later.

Apply online in four steps

The department lists a web portal and a mobile app for hostel registration. A department announcement from December 2024 says an online management system with PITB was introduced for merit based allocation of beds. We could not open the portal from our computer, so we cannot describe each screen.

  1. Get your employer verification certificate, with character verification and job details.
  2. Keep your CNIC and a recent photo ready.
  3. Register on the department's hostel portal or app, and choose your city.
  4. Submit the form and wait for a vacancy and confirmation from the hostel.
Four steps to apply for a working women hostel in Punjab

If the portal does not work for you, ask the hostel office or call the Punjab helpline. Our guide to the Punjab women's helpline 1043 shows how to reach it.

Plan for the three year limit and other rules

The three year limit means a hostel is a bridge, not a home. Use the time to save for a rented flat. Our guide to a rent agreement on stamp paper helps when you move out.

If you are leaving an unsafe home and need a place to stay, a hostel for working women is not a shelter. The better route is a Dar-ul-Aman shelter home.

Common questions about Punjab working women hostels

Can a student live in a working women hostel?

No. The department says students and children are not accommodated. The hostels are for women who work.

Do private sector workers qualify?

Yes. The FAQ says women working in the government or private sector can apply. Government employees get preference when beds are short.

Is the security deposit returned?

The FAQ says the Rs 5,000 security is refundable and the Rs 1,000 admission fee is not. Ask the hostel office for the conditions of the refund in writing.

Can I live in the hostel in the city where my family lives?

No. Only non-local women can apply, so the hostel in your home city is not open to you.

How long can I stay?

Up to three years, according to the department's FAQ.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 8 October 2026 on the Women Development Department Punjab pages for working women hostels, eligibility and the FAQ, and its December 2024 announcement on the online hostel system. We could not open the hostel portal from our computer, so the steps follow the department's description. Fees are from the FAQ and apply to major cities only. We could not confirm current vacancies.
