How to Open an Asaan Digital Account in Pakistan From Your Phone
Open an Asaan Digital Account in Pakistan from your phone with a CNIC, your own SIM and a selfie. Banks that offer it, SBP limits, biometrics and papers.

You can open an Asaan Digital Account in Pakistan from your phone with only your CNIC, a mobile number registered in your own name and a live selfie. Meezan Bank, UBL and Bank AL Habib all offer one. The account has no minimum balance, and State Bank rules cap it at PKR 3 million in balance and PKR 1 million a month in withdrawals.
We read the State Bank of Pakistan's Consolidated Customer Onboarding Framework and three banks' own Asaan Digital Account pages on 28 September 2026. The framework, issued as BPRD Circular No. 01 of 2025 on 25 July 2025, is the rulebook every bank follows when it opens an account through an app.
The short version: no branch visit, no salary slip, and no paper form. The one thing that stops people is the SIM. If your number is registered on a parent's or spouse's CNIC, the app will not let you through.
What an Asaan Digital Account is
An Asaan Digital Account is a basic rupee bank account for resident Pakistanis, opened through a bank's app or website instead of a branch. "Asaan" means easy: it asks for less paperwork than when you open a bank account in Pakistan at a branch, and in return it carries balance and withdrawal limits set by the State Bank.
It is a full bank account, not a mobile wallet. You get an account number, a debit card if you want one, and a cheque book at the banks we read. Money sits with a bank, not a branchless banking operator.
Three rules in SBP's framework shape it:
- It is for resident Pakistanis only, in rupees only.
- You can hold only one Asaan account in a single bank.
- You make a self-declaration about your income, residency and who owns the money, instead of showing documents.
Overseas Pakistanis use a different product, the Roshan Digital Account, which is built for non-residents and foreign currency. A fully digital bank is different again: an Asaan Digital Account is opened by an ordinary bank that also has branches.
Documents you need to open it from your phone
You need a valid CNIC, a mobile number registered on that same CNIC, and your biometric check through NADRA. The banks we read ask for no salary slip or income proof: a self-declaration covers income. The app also takes a live photo to match against your CNIC picture.
| What you need | Why | Where we read it |
|---|---|---|
| Valid CNIC (or SNIC) | Identity, checked with NADRA | SBP framework, all three banks |
| Mobile number registered on your CNIC | The bank must match your SIM to your CNIC | UBL, SBP framework |
| Live photo or selfie | Matched with the picture on your CNIC | SBP framework, Meezan |
| Biometric verification | Fingerprint or face check with NADRA | SBP framework, all three banks |
| Self-declaration of income | Replaces a salary slip or tax papers | SBP framework, UBL, Bank AL Habib |

UBL says this plainly. Asked whether you can apply if your number is not registered in your name, its answer is "Unfortunately, no", because the State Bank requires the match. Check whose name your SIM is on before you start, using the SIMs registered on your CNIC check.
How to open an Asaan Digital Account, step by step
Download your chosen bank's app or open its account page, verify your mobile number by OTP, enter your CNIC details, give your occupation, do the biometric check and take a selfie. Meezan lists exactly these steps. UBL says you can use the account once it emails your account number.
- Download the bank's app, for example Meezan Digital, or open the bank's online account form. Turn on location if the app asks.
- Enter your mobile number and the one-time code (OTP) the bank sends.
- Type your CNIC number, issue date and other ID details.
- Add your occupation and accept the self-declaration about your income.
- Do your biometric verification, then take a live selfie, review and submit.

Biometric verification means the bank checks your fingerprint or face against NADRA's record. SBP says it can be done in the app, in a branch or by another authenticated method. Bank AL Habib has a separate Biometric Verification app for this. Meezan builds it into the account opening flow.
If the fingerprint check fails, the framework has a fallback. The bank can run a NADRA Verisys check with your SIM and an OTP instead. Failing that, it can open the account with withdrawals blocked until you verify. Older people whose fingerprints do not read well may find the NADRA face and iris check easier.
Do not leave it pending. UBL says an account without biometric verification stays active for 60 days only, and is then blocked.
Which banks offer it, and what they say
We checked three banks' own pages: Meezan Bank, UBL and Bank AL Habib. All three let you apply without a branch visit, and Meezan and Bank AL Habib say there is no initial deposit. Faysal Bank has a page for one under its Burraq digital account, but it blocked our reader, so we could not confirm the details.
| Bank | How you apply | What its page says |
|---|---|---|
| Meezan Bank | Meezan Digital app | Islamic current or savings account, no initial deposit, free cheque book on current accounts, one per customer, new customers only |
| UBL | UBL Digital website or app | Free debit card issuance, 60 days to complete biometrics, new customers only |
| Bank AL Habib | Online application, plus AL Habib Biometric Verification app | No minimum balance or initial deposit, Visa debit cards, no other account at the bank alongside it |

Pick the bank you would actually walk into if something went wrong. A digital account still needs a branch for some jobs, like a disputed transaction or a cheque book problem. Check the bank timings in Pakistan for that branch before you go, since Friday and Saturday hours differ.
Limits and fees on an Asaan Digital Account
SBP's framework caps an Asaan account at a maximum balance of PKR 3,000,000 and withdrawals of PKR 1,000,000 a month. The banks we read ask for no initial deposit. Debit cards, cheque books and transfers follow each bank's schedule of charges.
| Item | Rule or figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum balance | PKR 3,000,000 | SBP framework, Meezan |
| Monthly withdrawals and payments | PKR 1,000,000 | SBP framework, Meezan, UBL |
| Initial deposit or minimum balance | None | Meezan, Bank AL Habib |
| Number of Asaan accounts | One per bank | SBP framework |
| International payments | Restricted, unless the card allows them within limits | SBP framework |

Two banks describe the balance limit differently from the framework. UBL's page still says a maximum balance of PKR 1,000,000, and Bank AL Habib lists PKR 1 million a month in credits. SBP's 2025 framework says PKR 3,000,000. Ask your bank which figure its system uses before you move a large sum in.
Some money does not count against the limit. SBP lets profit on your deposit and foreign remittances take you above the balance cap. It also says banks cannot charge you for going past a limit.
Outgrow the limits? SBP tells banks to let you convert an Asaan Digital Account into a regular account once you give the extra documents. You do not need to close it and start again.

What is the limit on an Asaan Digital Account?

At UBL, the account stays active for 60 days and is then blocked. Complete it in the app or at a branch.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked on 28 September 2026. The rules on identity checks, biometric verification in-app or in branch, the Verisys fallback and debit block, the live photo, the self-declaration, the PKR 3,000,000 balance and PKR 1,000,000 monthly debit limits, one account per bank and conversion to a regular account were read in the State Bank of Pakistan's BPRD Circular No. 01 of 2025, the Consolidated Customer Onboarding Framework dated 25 July 2025. Bank details were read on Meezan Bank's Digital Asaan Account page, UBL's Asaan Digital Account page on ubldigital.com, and Bank AL Habib's digital account page. Faysal Bank's page did not load for us, and we did not open an account ourselves. Debit card and transfer fees change with each bank's half-yearly schedule of charges, so check that before you order a card.
