How to Open a Bank Account in Pakistan

The Asaan Account is the simple route. What to take to the branch, why the source of funds answer matters, and the charges to ask about.

How to open a bank account in Pakistan

For most people the simplest route is an Asaan Account. It is the basic account category introduced to let ordinary customers open an account on a simplified form with a small opening deposit, rather than the paperwork a full commercial account expects.

The core requirement either way is a valid CNIC in your own name. Almost every failed account opening in Pakistan traces back to that document, either because it has expired or because the details on it do not match what is being declared.

Two routes, and most people need the simpler one

FormSimplified, one page in practiceFull account opening form

Income proofUsually a self declarationOften documented

The trade off is the limits. An Asaan Account is designed for ordinary personal use, so if you expect large or frequent inflows, particularly business receipts or foreign remittances at volume, discuss the right product with the bank rather than opening the simplest one and hitting a ceiling.

What to take to the branch

Documents needed to open a bank account in Pakistan
  1. Your original CNIC, valid and not expired, plus a copy.
  2. Your mobile number, since it becomes the account's contact and security channel.
  3. The opening deposit in cash, if the product requires one.
  4. Proof of income or occupation if you are opening a standard account.
  5. Next of kin details, which most banks ask for at opening.

Expect biometric verification against the NADRA record. That is normal and it is why the CNIC has to be current. If yours has expired, deal with that first, and our guide on renewing an expired CNIC sets out the routes.

Answer the source of funds question properly

What blocks a bank account opening in Pakistan

Banks ask what you do and where the money comes from. This is not intrusiveness for its own sake, it sets the expected activity on the account, and an account that behaves very differently from its declared profile gets restricted later.

So describe your actual situation. If you are a student with family support, say so. If you freelance, say so, because freelance inflows into an account declared as a salaried one is a common cause of an account being frozen for review months afterwards. Getting this right at opening avoids the harder conversation later.

Read the charges before you sign

Every bank publishes a schedule of charges. The entries that matter for an ordinary account are the minimum balance requirement if any, the debit card issuance and annual fee, SMS alert charges, cheque book cost, and the fee for a statement or a certificate.

Ask for the schedule rather than a verbal summary, because these are the amounts that quietly reduce a small balance over a year. Ask specifically whether the account has a minimum balance penalty, since that is the one that surprises people who leave an account lightly used.

Protect the account from the first day

Set the mobile number to one you control and keep it active, because it is the channel for one time passwords and alerts. Turn on transaction alerts if they are optional.

Never share a PIN or a one time password, including with someone claiming to be from the bank, because banks do not ask for them. If a card is lost, block it immediately rather than waiting, and our guide to blocking an ATM card covers the fastest route. Keep the bank helpline numbers somewhere you can reach without your phone.

One last habit worth forming. Use the account at least once a year, because an account left untouched is marked dormant and the card stops working at the moment you need it.

Common questions about opening an account

Can I open an account without a CNIC?

Not as an adult in your own name. The CNIC is the identity document the system is built around, and biometric verification runs against the NADRA record.

How much money do I need to open one?

An Asaan Account is designed for a small opening deposit, while other products vary. We could not read a current figure on an official page, so ask the branch rather than relying on a number from elsewhere.

Can students open an account?

Yes, and the simplified category exists partly for exactly that. Take your CNIC, and explain your situation honestly on the source of funds question.

Can I open an account online?

Several banks offer digital opening for some products, usually with a video or biometric step. Availability differs by bank, so check with the one you want.

What if my account gets restricted later?

Restrictions usually follow a mismatch between declared and actual activity, or an out of date document. Contact the bank, ask what is required in writing, and update the record.

Last checked and sources

Last checked 26 August 2026. The State Bank website responded to us on that date and its own pages reference the Asaan Account category, but the State Bank circular annex we downloaded to read the detailed requirements was a scanned file with no text layer, so we could not read the criteria at source. The description of the two routes, the documents and the biometric step is therefore drawn from how banks publish their own account opening requirements and from reporting, and no rupee figure is quoted anywhere on this page for that reason, including the opening deposit and the schedule of charges. Requirements and amounts differ between banks and change, so confirm with the branch you intend to use.
