Pakistanis need a visa for Austria, and the Austrian Embassy in Islamabad says Pakistani passport holders also need an airport transit visa (category A) just to change planes at Vienna airport. A tourist or family visit visa is the Schengen visa C, booked through VFS Global in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi. Apply no earlier than six months and no later than 15 days before you travel, or the application is rejected.

We read the embassy's visa page, its how to apply page and the European Commission's Schengen visa page on 7 November 2026. Below are the visa types, the fee, the documents, and the one transit rule that catches travellers flying through Vienna to somewhere else.

Austria issues three visa types to Pakistanis

The embassy describes three categories. Pick the right one before you book, because each is applied for differently.

A Vienna connection needs an airport transit visa on a Pakistani passport

Most travellers who stay inside the airport transit zone during a stopover do not need a visa. Austria makes an exception for 13 nationalities, and the embassy lists Pakistan among them, with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Sri Lanka and others. Their nationals need a category A visa even to stay in the international transit zone of an Austrian airport, unless an exemption covers them.

This matters for anyone booking a cheap ticket to North America or another part of Europe with a change in Vienna. If you do not hold the airport transit visa or an exemption, the airline can refuse to board you in Pakistan. The embassy points to Austria's Federal Ministry of the Interior for the list of exemptions, and we did not find the list itself on the embassy page. Ask the embassy or your airline before you pay for a Vienna routing.

The same rule exists in other countries. Our guide to the UK transit visa for Pakistani passports covers Heathrow connections.

The Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children

The European Commission lists the standard Schengen visa fee as €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 12. A visa service centre such as VFS can add its own service fee. The embassy says VFS only receives applications and returns passports, and that every decision is made by the Austrian Embassy alone.

The Commission says the normal processing time is 15 days, which can stretch to 45 days if more checks or documents are needed. The embassy itself warns of longer processing times at present and asks applicants to apply early, up to six months ahead.

Book a VFS slot and bring these documents

Follow these steps for a Schengen visa C to Austria:

  1. Confirm Austria is your main destination. If you visit several countries with no main one, apply to the country whose border you cross first.
  2. Book an appointment on VFS Global for the Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi centre.
  3. Fill and sign the visa application form.
  4. Attend the appointment for fingerprints, unless yours were taken in the last 59 months.
  5. Pay the visa fee and the VFS service fee, then track the passport return through VFS.

The embassy's document list includes:

  • A passport not older than 10 years, with two free pages, valid for three months after the visa ends
  • A colour ICAO photo, 35 by 45 mm, and a copy of the passport data page
  • Copies of earlier Schengen visas
  • A flight reservation or booking; a paid ticket is not required
  • Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel reservation
  • Travel medical insurance for the Schengen area with at least €30,000 cover
  • Proof of your ties to Pakistan: property, a job, studies, pension or family
  • For a family visit, an informal invitation letter, and if your host pays, the eight digit number of their electronic declaration of sponsorship

English documents do not need a German translation, the embassy says, though the consulate can ask for one in other cases. Bank statements are a common weak point. Our guide to getting a bank statement online in Pakistan shows how to download one from the main banks.

Key Austria Schengen visa rules for Pakistani applicants

Work, study and long stay visas are booked by email, not VFS

For a D visa, a student residence permit or a Red-White-Red Card, the embassy says appointments must be requested by email directly with its consulate, using the form attached to its page. It warns that demand is very high and waits may be longer. If your residence permit has already been approved, the embassy will contact you, so you do not need to write in.

The embassy also states the fee for a residence permit application as €218 in its consular fees table.

The embassy warns of fake phone numbers on Google

The embassy says false information about it is circulating in Google search, including a fake phone number and misleading appointment offers. Its correct number is +92 51 8770 700, and its address is 7 A, Street 21, F 8-2, Islamabad. It says it does not work with intermediaries or agencies. Never pay anyone who offers an Austrian appointment by phone or WhatsApp. Our guide to checking a real embassy phone number explains how to spot these listings.
