For a UK visa you need a Secure English Language Test, or SELT, from a Home Office approved provider. Duolingo is not on the approved list. The list names IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert, Skills for English UKVI and Trinity tests. Results stay valid for 2 years. Book the wrong version of a test and you lose both the fee and the time.

Most Pakistani applicants make this mistake with the plain IELTS or plain PTE. Those are not the same product as the UKVI versions. This guide shows how to check the exact test name before you pay.

The UK accepts only Secure English Language Tests for these visas

A SELT is a test the Home Office approves for visa use. The GOV.UK page, last updated on 5 October 2026, lists the approved test names and providers. If your test is not on that page, it will not satisfy the visa rule.

Outside the UK, the page names these approved providers: PSI Services (UK) Ltd, the IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT and Pearson. A downloadable list of approved test centres outside the UK is on the same page. We could not confirm from the page text which Pakistani cities appear on that list, so check it before you book.

Check that your route needs a four skills test

The routes that need a full four skills SELT include Skilled Worker, Student, Health and Care Worker, High Potential Individual, Scale-up Worker, Start-up and Innovator Founder. Partner, parent and settlement routes need speaking and listening only.

Routes that need all four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) are listed on the page as Health and Care Worker, High Potential Individual, Innovator Founder, Minister of Religion, Scale-up Worker, Skilled Worker, Start-up, Student and Temporary Work under an international agreement.

Routes that need only speaking and listening are Citizenship, International Sportsperson, parent, partner, Representative of an Overseas Business and settlement. Read your own visa page for the score you need. The guides to the UK student visa from Pakistan and the UK Skilled Worker visa from Pakistan cover the route rules.

Follow these steps before you book any English test

Match the test name on the booking page with the GOV.UK list, word for word. The name must include UKVI or SELT where the list does. If a centre cannot show you that exact name, do not pay.

  1. Open the GOV.UK page on secure English language tests and read the approved list.
  2. Check whether your visa route needs four skills or speaking and listening only.
  3. Pick a provider from the list and find its booking page for Pakistan.
  4. Confirm the booking says the exact approved test name, such as IELTS for UKVI.
  5. Check the fee on the provider's own page. Our guides to the IELTS fee in Pakistan and the PTE fee in Pakistan list what we found.
  6. After the test, save the result reference. It is the proof you will use in your application.
Six steps to check an English test is approved for a UK visa before booking

Remember that results are valid for two years and one test can run out

The page says test results are valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded. If you pass in October 2026 and apply after October 2028, you must test again. Plan your test date close to your application.

One recent change is worth knowing. The page notes that the LanguageCert ESOL SELT four skills test was replaced by two new tests from 6 July 2025. Earlier results remain valid for two years. If a friend took the old LanguageCert test, ask which version it was.

Rule that English test results are valid for two years from the date awarded

Treat university and visa English rules as two different things

A university can set its own English rule for admission. The visa has a separate rule set by the Home Office. Passing a test that a university likes does not mean it satisfies the visa.

Ask both questions in writing: does this test meet your admission rule, and is it a SELT on GOV.UK? Fake agents often confuse the two. The advice on how to check a study abroad agent in Pakistan applies here. Another route to study in the UK is described in the guide to the UK Graduate visa.

Common questions about UK English tests from Pakistan

Is the Duolingo English Test accepted for a UK visa?

No. Duolingo is not listed as an approved provider on the GOV.UK page for secure English language tests.

Is plain IELTS enough for a UK visa?

Not unless it is the approved version. The page lists IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills. Check the booking says the UKVI name.

How long is a SELT result valid?

It is valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded, according to the GOV.UK page.

Can I take the test in Pakistan?

The approved providers run tests outside the UK, and the page links a list of centres. We could not confirm Pakistani cities from the page text, so check the list.

Do I need a SELT for a student visa?

The page lists the Student route among those needing a four skills SELT. Confirm the exact rule on your visa page and with your sponsor.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 8 October 2026 on GOV.UK: the guidance page on proving your English language ability with a secure English language test, last updated 5 October 2026. We did not confirm test centre cities in Pakistan, fees, or score requirements. Always check the visa page for your route.
