FIR Against Your CNIC: How to Check If a Case Is Registered Against You in Pakistan (Every Province)

No police site in Pakistan shows FIRs by CNIC. A police character certificate makes police check your record: Rs 1,000 in Islamabad, station checks in KP.

No police force in Pakistan lets you type a CNIC and see FIRs registered against it. The legal way to check is to apply for a police character certificate, which makes the police search their records for your name at every station where you have lived. In Islamabad that costs Rs 1,000 and takes 3 working days; in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the SHO and DSP of each station verify your record on the back of an affidavit.

People search "FIR against CNIC" after a threat in a family dispute, a warning from a business partner, or a strange call claiming "a case has been registered". Websites offering an instant CNIC lookup are not official. We checked the police websites of Punjab, Islamabad and KP on 24 October 2026, and none has that service.

Below are the routes that do work, what each costs where the police publish it, and what to do if a case turns up.

Police keep FIR records, but only officers can search them

FIRs are stored in police record systems that officers can search by name, but the public cannot. Islamabad Police says only the complainant can apply for a copy of an FIR. So an outsider, or the accused, cannot simply look one up.

Punjab Police says every FIR in the province is entered into its Police Station Record Management System, which shows supervisory officers the accused, witnesses and hearing dates. That is an internal tool. The Islamabad Police copy of FIR form asks for the FIR number, year and police station, details you only have if you lodged it.

That is a privacy protection, not a gap. A public CNIC search would let anyone check anyone. The character certificate route makes you prove who you are before the police tell you about your own record.

A police character certificate is the official record check

Applying for a character certificate, also called a police clearance certificate, makes the police check their records against your name, parentage and addresses. If they find a case, it shows up in the process. If they find nothing, you get a certificate saying so.

Each province runs it differently. Here is what we could read on 24 October 2026:

How each province in Pakistan checks police records for a character certificate

KP's method checks every police station you have lived under

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police asks you to get your criminal record verified by the beat officer, the Moharrar, the SHO and the circle DSP of your local police station, on the back of a stamp paper affidavit. With several addresses, you verify at every station.

KP Police's instructions, read on 24 October 2026, list the rest:

  1. A 10 point affidavit on stamp paper, attested by an Oath Commissioner.
  2. Unattested photocopies of your CNIC, your passport if you are overseas, and two passport size photos.
  3. Apply in the districts of both the permanent and present addresses on your CNIC.
  4. Collect the certificate in person at the PAL office, where you sign and give fingerprints.

This is slow, but it answers the question directly. The officer who keeps the station's registers, the Moharrar, is the person who would know about a case at that station. If you lived in another district for years, verify there too.

Steps to check for an FIR against your CNIC in Pakistan

An old FIR follows you into visa and job paperwork

A past case does not vanish from the record when it ends. The National Police Bureau's checklist for its Spain clearance certificate asks anyone with a criminal record for the FIR copy, court-attested acquittal orders, and an affidavit giving the FIR number, sections and outcome.

That is a useful reminder for anyone who was named and later cleared. Keep the court-attested copy of the acquittal or discharge order from the court's copy branch. The NPB checklist says a photocopy is not acceptable. Embassies and employers who receive a certificate showing a past case will usually want the same proof.

If you plan to travel, a case can also lead to travel restrictions through separate lists run by the federal government. Read the FIA travel rules before you book.

If the record check shows an FIR against you, find out the FIR number, year, police station and offence. Then speak to a lawyer the same day. Whether you need bail before arrest depends on the offence and the facts, which a lawyer must judge.

Once you are named as accused and the case moves to court, you are entitled to copies of the FIR and witness statements. We explain how to get free copies of the FIR before trial. If you believe the FIR is false, there are four legal routes to have it cancelled, from a police cancellation report to the High Court.

Two warnings. First, never pay someone who calls claiming an FIR exists and offering to "settle" it. Ask for the FIR number and police station, then verify yourself at that station. Second, do not type your CNIC into lookalike "FIR check" sites. Your CNIC is the key to SIMs, bank accounts and loans, and these are the checks that protect your CNIC from misuse.

Common questions

Can I check an FIR against my CNIC online?

No official police website in Pakistan offers this. We checked Punjab, Islamabad and KP Police on 24 October 2026. The character certificate process is the legal way to have your record checked.

Will a police character certificate show a pending case?

The police search their records when they process it. NPB's Spain affidavit, for example, asks applicants to declare any case pending in any police station or court, with its FIR number and status.

How much is a police character certificate in Islamabad?

Rs 1,000, payable at the counter, with 3 working days standard processing, according to Islamabad Police's character certificate page on 24 October 2026.

Can I get a copy of an FIR someone filed against me?

Islamabad Police says only the complainant can apply for a copy through its service. As an accused, you get copies through the court process, or a lawyer can obtain them.

Is there an FIR check by name in Punjab?

No public one. Punjab Police offers copies of FIRs to the person who reported them, through a Police Khidmat Markaz. Our FIR check for Punjab covers every route the province offers.

What should I do if someone threatens to file a false FIR?

Keep the messages or recordings, and tell a lawyer. Section 182 of the Pakistan Penal Code punishes a deliberately false case with up to six months in prison or a fine, according to Punjab Police's FAQ.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read Islamabad Police's character certificate page and copy of FIR page, the KP Police character certificate instructions, Punjab Police's home page, FAQs and record system page, and the National Police Bureau's Spain clearance checklist, all on 24 October 2026. Punjab's Khidmat Markaz site, Sindh Police's record verification portal and the Balochistan Police site did not load or blocked us that day, so we have not given fees for those provinces.
