Check If a Router, Modem or Wi-Fi Device Is PTA Type Approved Before You Buy in Pakistan
PTA says approved devices must show an approval number and Approved by PTA. See which devices need approval, which are exempt and how to check the list.

Short answer: PTA says every type approved device must carry a sign that shows its PTA Type Approval number and the words "Approved by PTA". You can match that number against PTA's Approved Equipment lists. Phones, tablets, dongles, SIM-based routers and two-way radios need approval. Switches, firewalls and non-SIM laptops are exempt.
A seller says an imported 4G router is "PTA approved". The box shows a sticker with no number. You have no way to know if it is true unless you know where to look. PTA publishes the register.
We opened PTA's Type Approval page, its FAQ sheet and the Approved Equipment page on 12 October 2026. Phone registration through DIRBS is a different check, and we cover it separately.
Type approval is a legal condition for connecting a device
PTA's page says that under section 29 of the Telecom Act, 1996, no terminal equipment may be connected directly or indirectly to the public network unless PTA has type approved it. Approval shows the device suits Pakistani networks and may be sold in the open market.
Type approval is not the same as a Certificate of Compliance. PTA's FAQ says type approval is for makers and importers before sale, while the Certificate of Compliance is what an importer needs to clear type approved goods through customs. A buyer deals only with the first.
On 8 September 2026 PTA also announced that the Telecommunication Equipment Standards Regulations had been notified in the Gazette as S.R.O. 1110(I)/2026. It says a Certificate of Compliance is mandatory before import, deployment or use. Our guide on the new PTA rules for phones and devices covers that notice.
Which devices need approval and which are exempt
PTA's FAQ lists devices that need type approval: mobile handsets, tablets, dongles, two-way radios, IP phones, PABX systems, satellite terminals, SIM-based tracking devices and IoT modules. It exempts switches, firewalls, servers, storage, laptops without SIM and GPS-only devices.
| Device | Type approval, per PTA's FAQ |
|---|---|
| Mobile phones, tablets, USB dongles | Required |
| SIM-based trackers and IoT modules | Required |
| Walkie-talkies (VHF, UHF, HF) | Required, and some bands need a licence too |
| Network switches, firewalls, servers | Exempt |
| Laptops and desktops without a SIM | Exempt |
| GPS-only devices | Exempt |

A plain home Wi-Fi router is in neither list. The FAQ's frequency table names routers and says they need no PTA licence when they stay within the allowed bands. Because we cannot say from the text whether a given router counts as terminal equipment, ask the seller for an approval number and check it.
A 4G or 5G router or MiFi that takes a SIM is different. It falls under SIM-based equipment and is a device that needs approval.
How to check a device in five steps
Ask for the PTA Type Approval number printed on the box or shown in the device's settings, then search PTA's Approved Equipment files for the brand and model. If the model is not listed and the number does not match, do not take the seller's word for it.
- Look on the box, label or in the device's software for a mark that says "Approved by PTA" with a number.
- Open PTA's Type Approval page and choose "Type Approved Equipment".
- Pick the right category, such as Mobile Device, Fax Data / DSL Modem or Wireless Radio Transceiver.
- Search the downloaded file for the brand and model name.
- Match the number on the box to the number in PTA's list, and keep a photo of both.

What PTA's Approved Equipment page holds
The page splits the register into nine main categories and eight other categories. The main ones include Wireless Radio Transceiver, IP Phone and VoIP, Mobile Device, PABX, Satellite, Repeaters and SIM Based Other Equipment. The other list includes Fax Data / DSL Modem and Printers.
Each model needs its own approval. PTA's FAQ says a different variant, or a hardware change such as a new board or memory option, needs a fresh certificate. A software update alone does not. So a seller who says "same brand, same approval" is not enough: match the model.
For signal boosters the rule is stricter: a repeater needs a No Objection Certificate from the Frequency Allocation Board. Read whether a mobile signal repeater is legal to use before you buy one, and the legal fixes for weak signal at home if that is why you are shopping.
If the device is not on the list
Ask the seller for the approval number in writing and for a receipt that names the model. Do not insert a SIM or connect the device to a network until it matches. Without a number or a listing, treat the claim as unproven.
PTA's FAQ names its type approval division email as typeapproval@pta.gov.pk, and the consumer helpline on its site is 0800-55055. Our guide on checking a phone bought online before inserting the SIM covers the separate DIRBS step for handsets, and router placement tips help once your device is sorted.
PTA also says it does not issue type approval for jamming equipment such as anti-drone or GPS jammers. It sends such cases to an inter-ministerial committee, so a seller who offers a "PTA approved jammer" is not describing a real PTA certificate.
Common questions
Does every Wi-Fi router need PTA approval?
PTA's FAQ does not name home routers in its list of devices that need approval or its list of exemptions. A SIM-based router does need approval. Ask the seller for a number and check it.
Where is the PTA approval number shown?
PTA says each approved device must carry a paper label or an electronic mark with the unique approval number and the words "Approved by PTA". Retailers must make sure it is there.
Is type approval the same as PTA registration for phones?
No. Type approval clears a model for sale. DIRBS registration ties a specific handset's IMEI to a SIM. Our IMEI check guide covers the second.
Do laptops need type approval?
PTA exempts laptops and desktops that do not use a SIM. One with a built-in SIM slot falls under the rule for SIM-based devices.
Can a walkie-talkie be used without a licence?
Not always. PTA's FAQ says two-way radios need type approval, and devices on bands such as HF and UHF may need further licences or authorisations.
Whom do I ask about a type approval query?
PTA's FAQ gives the email typeapproval@pta.gov.pk for its type approval division. For general help, PTA's consumer helpline is 0800-55055.
