Bought a Phone Online in Pakistan? Check PTA Status Before You Insert the SIM
A phone counts as activated once a SIM or Wi-Fi is on, and returns get harder. Check every IMEI on 8484 first. Six checks for phones bought online in Pakistan.

If you bought a phone online in Pakistan, check its PTA status before you put a SIM in it. Dial *#06# to see every IMEI, then send each one by SMS to 8484 from another phone. Daraz treats a phone as "activated" once a SIM goes in or it connects to Wi-Fi, and after that it accepts a return only through the seller or the brand.
That one rule matters a lot during a big sale. Daraz's 10.10 sale went live on 10 October 2026, and its flash sale page listed phones such as a Samsung Galaxy S26 FE when we checked that day. We read Daraz's own return and warranty policies and PTA's DIRBS FAQ the same day. DIRBS is the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System, PTA's register of every phone allowed on Pakistani networks.
Why the order of the checks matters
Daraz's return policy says a mobile phone counts as activated once a SIM card is inserted or it joins Wi-Fi. For phones, Daraz takes returns directly only if the device is dead on arrival, meaning it does not switch on at all.
So the normal habit of putting in your SIM first is the wrong move. Do every check you can with the phone offline, and only then insert the SIM. If something is wrong, you still have the cleanest route back.
| Situation | What Daraz's policy says |
|---|---|
| Return window | Raise a request within 14 days of delivery |
| Change of mind on phones | Not accepted |
| Dead on arrival | Return directly with Daraz |
| Already activated | Go to the seller or brand warranty |
| Activated means | SIM inserted or connected to Wi-Fi |
Six checks to do before the SIM goes in
Film the unboxing, match the IMEI on the box with the phone, check every IMEI on 8484 and confirm the model shown by PTA matches the phone in your hand. Then check the warranty card before you activate anything.
- Record a video as you open the parcel, with the seal visible.
- Dial *#06# on the new phone. This works without a SIM.
- Compare those IMEIs with the ones printed on the box.
- Send each IMEI by SMS to 8484 from another phone, or use PTA's DVS app.
- Check that the model in PTA's reply matches the phone.
- Read the warranty card and note who gives the warranty.
Check every IMEI, not just the first. PTA's FAQ says a dual SIM or eSIM phone can have more than one, and each one must show as compliant. If the two IMEIs do not belong to the same device, PTA says the phone is subject to blocking. The full set of replies is explained in how to check an IMEI and PTA status.
What PTA's 8484 reply means for a new phone
A brand new, officially imported phone should come back as compliant with the right model name. Any reply saying "not registered", "duplicated", "stolen" or "fraudulent activity" is a reason to return the phone at once, while it is still unactivated.
Watch for one subtle reply. If PTA says the phone is registered under an individual CNIC or passport, it was registered by a person who paid the tax, not by the official importer. PTA's FAQ says such phones are bought and sold "at your own risk", and advises getting the PSID and customs duty receipt from the seller. A new phone in a sale should not need that.
Be wary of listings that say "patched", "lifetime patched" or "CPID approved". PTA's FAQ calls patching an illegal change to a phone's IMEI. It says such phones can be blocked at any time and that the FIA can act under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016. If a phone you already use has been blocked as a copy, the steps to fix a duplicate or cloned IMEI apply.
Brand warranty, seller warranty or international warranty
Daraz lists three kinds of warranty, and they are not equal. Brand warranty is honoured at the maker's own service centres in Pakistan. Seller warranty depends on that one seller. International warranty may mean shipping the phone abroad for repair.
Check the "Return and Warranty" section of the listing before you pay, and again on the card in the box. For a phone, brand warranty from the official Pakistani distributor is the one you want. You can confirm it by IMEI on the maker's site, as shown in how to check phone warranty by IMEI.
What to do if a check fails
Do not insert the SIM. Raise a return request in the Daraz app within 14 days, attach your unboxing video and a screenshot of the 8484 reply, and keep the phone switched off.
If the seller refuses and the phone is already activated, you still have your rights as a buyer. The rules on online return and refund rights in Pakistan set out the next steps, including a consumer court complaint. For the sale itself, bank card offers and fake sale messages are covered in the Daraz 10.10 sale details.
Common questions
Can I check PTA status without a SIM?
Yes. Dial *#06# on the new phone to see the IMEIs, then text them to 8484 from any other phone or use PTA's DVS app.
Does connecting to Wi-Fi count as activating the phone?
Yes, under Daraz's return policy. Inserting a SIM or joining Wi-Fi both count.
Can I return a phone because I changed my mind?
No. Daraz does not accept change of mind returns on phones, tablets, chargers or earphones.
What if PTA says the phone is not registered?
A new phone sold as PTA approved should be registered. Return it unactivated, or you will have 60 days from first use on a network to register it and pay the tax yourself.
Is a "Like New" phone covered?
Daraz says Like New phones carry its own 3 month warranty for defects, and change of mind does not apply.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked 10 October 2026. We read Daraz's return policy and warranty policy pages on daraz.pk, which give the 14 day return window, the dead on arrival rule, the definition of an activated phone, the three warranty types and the 3 month Like New phone warranty. We saw the 10.10 sale and flash sale live on daraz.pk the same day. We read PTA's DIRBS FAQ document, updated 14 October 2025, for the pre-purchase checks, the 8484 and DVS replies, the individual registration warning, the 60 day rule and the description of patched phones. We did not buy a phone in the sale. Daraz can change its policies, so read the product page's Return and Warranty section before you pay.
