Short answer: The Sindh Excise, Taxation and Narcotics Control Department keeps a public list of insurers at excise.gos.pk/insurers. On 12 October 2026 it showed 36 records, of which 29 were marked Active and 7 were marked Cease Operation. Before you buy vehicle insurance in Sindh, find the company on that list and check its status.

Picture a driver in Karachi who gets a policy through an agent at the registration counter. The paper carries a company name he has never heard of. A two-minute look at the department's list tells him whether the name is there and whether that company is still operating.

We opened the insurer registry on the Sindh Excise website on 12 October 2026 and read both pages of it, 36 records in all. We did not test any insurer's claims service and we do not rank them. The registry is a status list, not a review.

The Sindh Excise registry lists 36 insurers and their status

Each record gives the company name, its address and phone numbers, a status of Active or Cease Operation, whether it has Window Takaful authorisation, and a link to its website. The page counts 36 total records, 29 active companies and 22 with Takaful authorisation.

Takaful is Islamic insurance. "Window Takaful" means a conventional company is authorised to run a Takaful window. "Dedicated Takaful Operator" means a company that does only Takaful.

Sindh Excise insurer registry counts: 36 records, 29 active, 7 cease operation, 22 Takaful authorised

Seven companies are marked Cease Operation

The seven are Continental Insurance, Pak-Kuwait Takaful, PICIC Insurance, Progressive Insurance, Silver Star Insurance, The Asian Mutual Insurance Company and The Pakistan Mutual Insurance Company. The registry shows no website link for these records.

A policy from a company marked Cease Operation is a warning sign. We do not know from the registry what happens to existing policies, so ask the company or the regulator before you pay anyone using such a name.

Two active records, The Cooperative Insurance Society of Pakistan and TRAFCO Insurance, also show no website link. That is not a problem by itself, but be careful that the phone number you call is the one printed on the registry.

How to check an insurer on the registry

Open the page, search the company name exactly as it appears on your policy, and read the status. The page lets you filter by name, contact detail, status or Takaful authorisation. Match the address and phone number to the paper in your hand.

  1. Open excise.gos.pk/insurers in your browser.
  2. Type the company name from your policy or quote in the search box.
  3. Read the status column: it must say Active.
  4. Match the address and phone number to your paper.
  5. If you want Takaful, check the Takaful authorisation column.
  6. Use the website link on the record to confirm the policy on the company's own page.

Third party insurance in Sindh: what we could and could not confirm

The department's news page carries an item titled "Sindh govt amends motor vehicles law: Third-party insurance made mandatory". The page is dated 7 March 2026 on the department's list. It gives no further detail, so we cannot tell you the rule, the date it starts or any penalty.

Third party insurance pays for harm you cause to other people or their property, not for damage to your own vehicle. Our guide on insuring a motorcycle in Pakistan explains the difference between third party and comprehensive cover.

The registry is only one check. It does not tell you a company's claims record or a policy's terms. For the national licence status of a company or broker, use the steps in checking an insurance company or broker is SECP licensed.

After you buy: keep the proof and check your vehicle record

Keep the policy document and the payment receipt. If you buy a car and the seller hands you an old policy, the cover may not carry over, so ask the insurer. For a Sindh vehicle, our guide on checking which vehicles are registered on your CNIC in Sindh shows how to confirm what the department holds.

If you need to claim, how to file a car insurance claim in Pakistan lists the documents and steps. Report the accident to the insurer soon after it happens, and keep photographs.

Common questions

Where is the list of approved insurers in Sindh?

It is on the Sindh Excise website at excise.gos.pk/insurers. It lists 36 records over two pages, with status, contact details and a website link.

How many insurers on the list are active?

The registry counted 29 active companies out of 36 records when we read it on 12 October 2026. Seven were marked Cease Operation.

Does being on the list mean a company is licensed?

The registry describes itself as a record of insurers and their status. We could not confirm from the page that it is a licence register, so check licensing with the national insurance regulator as well.

Is third party insurance compulsory in Sindh?

The Excise Department's news list carries a notice that third party insurance was made mandatory by an amendment to the motor vehicles law. The notice has no detail, so we cannot give the start date or penalty.

What does Takaful authorisation mean on the list?

It shows whether the company is authorised to offer Islamic insurance. It does not rate the company's service. A dedicated Takaful operator offers only Takaful.

What if my insurer is marked Cease Operation?

Contact the company at the number on the registry and ask in writing what happens to your policy and any open claim. Do not renew with that company.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read the insurer registry and the news list on the Sindh Excise website on 12 October 2026, at excise.gos.pk. The registry shows no date of its last update. We did not verify the third party insurance rule's details, claims records or whether any company's status changed after we read it.
