Dow Lab is the short name for the Dow Diagnostic Research and Reference Laboratory (DDRRL), run by Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) in Karachi since October 2007. DUHS says its rates are about 30 per cent of private rates and that it has more than 50 labs and collection points across Sindh and Balochistan. Dow Lab's most requested tests cost Rs 370 to Rs 2,100

The routine tests a family doctor writes most often all sit between Rs 370 and Rs 2,100 on Dow Lab's list. A blood count with ESR is Rs 900, a full lipid profile Rs 1,100 and a three-month sugar average (HbA1c) Rs 950.

Notice the two random sugar entries. The list has "RBS (random blood sugar test)" at Rs 110 and "Blood glucose random" at Rs 370. The page does not say how they differ. Ask the counter which one your doctor's slip needs before you pay, because the cheaper line may be a quick screening test rather than the lab method.

Thyroid, vitamin and hormone tests cost Rs 720 to Rs 2,100

A thyroid profile is Rs 2,100 at Dow Lab, while TSH on its own is Rs 720. Vitamin D (25-OH) is Rs 2,100 and vitamin B12 Rs 1,270. Ferritin, the iron store test often ordered with a blood count, costs Rs 1,250.

If your doctor only wants to screen the thyroid, TSH alone saves Rs 1,380 against the full profile. That is a question worth asking before the sample is drawn, not after.

Fever tests: dengue NS1 is Rs 1,600 and malaria ICT Rs 890

For a fever in dengue season, Dow Lab charges Rs 1,600 for the dengue antigen (NS1) test and Rs 1,250 for dengue IgG and IgM antibodies. A malaria parasite smear is Rs 550 and the rapid malaria antigen test Rs 890.

Timing matters more than price with dengue. NS1 works best in the first days of fever and antibodies later, which is why the dengue test price and timing in Pakistan is worth checking before you choose. Platelets, at Rs 450, may be repeated if your doctor wants to watch the count, so budget for more than one.

Hepatitis screening starts at Rs 450, and viral loads cost Rs 9,000

The quick HBsAg strip test costs Rs 450 and the HCV strip Rs 460 at Dow Lab. The fuller lab versions are Rs 1,100 for HBsAg and Rs 1,450 for the hepatitis C antibody. A hepatitis B or C viral load costs Rs 9,000.

Book Dow Lab home sampling on 021-111-362-273

You can walk into any Dow Lab collection point or ask for a home sample. DUHS lists 021-111-362-273 for home sampling and an online booking form that asks for name, phone, address, date, time and tests, and shows the total cost.

1. Open the Lab Sample Collection page on duhs.edu.pk, or call 021-111-362-273.
2. Enter the patient's name, contact number and full address.
3. Pick a suggested date and time.
4. Select the tests; the form adds up the total in rupees.
5. Submit and wait for the lab's call to confirm the visit.
