Short answer: England have 0 points after two defeats and can only reach the 31 October final if they beat Pakistan on 25 October and Sri Lanka on 29 October. Even then, the second spot may be settled by net run rate, which is England's weak point at about minus 0.89.

England lost to Pakistan by 87 runs on 20 October and to Sri Lanka by 2 wickets on 22 October, after scoring 429 for 4. Four points is the most they can reach. These scenarios are our own sums from the results and the fixture list, with 2 points a win assumed because the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) conditions page did not load for us.

England need to win both of their last two matches

England play Pakistan on Sunday, 25 October and Sri Lanka on Thursday, 29 October, both in Lahore. Two wins would give them 4 points. One win leaves them on 2, which works only in one case: Pakistan win both of their matches and England and Sri Lanka finish level on 2, with net run rate deciding.

England must beat Pakistan on 25 October and Sri Lanka on 29 October to stay alive for the final

A single win is a long shot because Pakistan already have 4 points. If Pakistan win either of their last two games, they reach 6 and England need Sri Lanka to stay level with them on 2.

Even two wins may not be enough

If England beat Pakistan and Sri Lanka, they reach 4 points. Pakistan are then on 4 or 6, depending on 27 October. If Pakistan beat Sri Lanka, England go second on 4. If Sri Lanka beat Pakistan, three teams are level on 4 and net run rate decides.

PakistanSri LankaAny0 or 2No

In the first row Pakistan win on 27 October, so they have 6, Sri Lanka 2 and England 4. England go second on points alone. That is England's cleanest path, and it needs Pakistan to beat Sri Lanka.

Net run rate is a problem for England

By our sums England's net run rate is about minus 0.89 after two matches, the lowest of the three. Their 87 run loss to Pakistan cost them the most. In a three-way tie on 4 points, they would start behind.

Net run rate after three matches: Pakistan plus 1.24, Sri Lanka minus 0.35, England minus 0.89

England can change that with big wins. Our page on how net run rate works shows why a 100 run win moves the figure more than a 2 wicket one. The rates are in the points table after 22 October.

Brook's double hundred did not earn a point

Harry Brook scored 202, but England bowled badly and lost. Sam Curran took 2 for 103 and Josh Tongue 3 for 79. Read the report on Brook's innings. The runs count for nothing in the table, and only for run rate.

England's possible points total: 4 with two wins, 2 with one, 0 with none
  1. Beat Pakistan at Lahore on 25 October.
  2. Hope Pakistan beat Sri Lanka on 27 October.
  3. Beat Sri Lanka on 29 October.
  4. Qualify second on 4 points, ahead of Sri Lanka on 2.

Where England have gone wrong

England's batting is not the problem. They scored 429 for 4 against Sri Lanka, with Brook making 202, Root 69, Jacks 66 not out off 30 balls and Banton 50. A team that scores like this can beat anyone on a flat pitch.

The problem is bowling. Against Pakistan on 20 October, England were 91 without loss after 14.3 overs and were bowled out for 215, losing ten wickets for 124 runs. Against Sri Lanka, they conceded 430. In two matches they have conceded 732 runs in about 99.8 overs by our sum, which is 7.3 an over.

That is the number England have to fix before 25 October. Pakistan's batters, including Hasan Nawaz and Faheem Ashraf, scored well on 20 October. The Pink Day match at Gaddafi Stadium is therefore a test of whether England's bowling plans change.

We cannot predict a result, and we do not. The sums above only tell you what each outcome would mean for the table.

What the table cannot tell you

These sums treat every match as a win or a loss with 2 points. If the board uses a different rule, or if rain ends a match without a result, the numbers change. We have said where we could not read the board's rules. Check its page before you rely on any scenario here.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

On 22 October 2026 we read the ICC story on the match and a full match report, plus our earlier fixture list from pcb.com.pk. We could not read the playing conditions, so 2 points a win and the tie-break order are assumptions. The scenarios and net run rate are our arithmetic.
