FBR Extends the Tax Return Deadline to 15 October 2026
FBR has extended the tax year 2026 income tax return deadline from 30 September to 15 October 2026 by Circular No. 3 of 2026-27. Who it covers and what to do.

FBR has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns for tax year 2026 to 15 October 2026. The order is FBR Circular No. 3 of 2026-27, dated 30 September 2026, issued under section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001. It covers everyone whose return was due on 30 September: salaried people, other individuals and associations of persons.
We read the circular on FBR's own website on the night of 30 September 2026. It says the date "is hereby extended up to October 15th, 2026 in view of the requests from various trade bodies and tax bar associations".
This is the official order. Earlier on 30 September, FBR's spokesperson had been reported as saying there would be no extension, and a fake extension circular was also shared online. The document linked below is the real one, posted on fbr.gov.pk.

The new deadline is 15 October 2026
The extension moves the last date by 15 days. It applies to the persons "who are required to file their returns by September 30th, 2026", in the circular's words. That means individuals, including salaried people, and associations of persons. Companies have their own later dates and are not affected.

You can read the circular yourself on FBR's download site. It is linked from the fbr.gov.pk home page under "Extension in Date of Filing of Income Tax Returns for Tax Year 2026".
Why FBR extended the deadline
The circular gives one reason: requests from trade bodies and tax bar associations. Several of them had asked for more time this month, citing problems on the IRIS portal. Their requests ranged from 31 October to 3 December, as reported. FBR gave 15 days.
IRIS was slow for many people on the last day, as we covered in what to do when IRIS is down on deadline day. The circular does not mention IRIS.
This is the same pattern as last year. For tax year 2025, FBR also extended on 30 September, first to 15 October and then to 31 October. The record of FBR deadline extensions from 2016 to 2025 shows an extension in every year we could check.
What the extension means for your penalty and filer status
If you file by 15 October 2026, you are treated as filing on time. That matters in two ways.
- No late filing penalty. Under section 182, a late return costs Rs 1,000 a day or 0.1% of tax payable a day, whichever is higher, with a Rs 10,000 minimum for mainly salaried people. That now applies only from 16 October.
- No ATL surcharge. A return filed by the due date puts you on the Active Taxpayers List. A late filer has to pay a surcharge of Rs 25,000 as an individual to get on it. See the Rs 25,000 ATL surcharge for how it works.
Section 182 itself refers to the "due date or extended due date", so 15 October is the date that counts.

What to do before 15 October
- File early, not on 15 October. The last day is always the busiest on IRIS. Aim for the first week.
- Complete both forms. The return and the wealth statement must both move to Completed Tasks. Our guide to checking your return was filed on IRIS shows how to confirm it.
- Pay any tax due first. Make a payment slip (PSID) on IRIS and pay it through your bank app.
- Use the step by step guide. The full process is in how to file your income tax return for 2026.
- Keep screenshots of any IRIS errors, with the time showing.
Common questions
Has FBR extended the tax return deadline for 2026?
Yes. FBR Circular No. 3 of 2026-27, dated 30 September 2026, extends it to 15 October 2026.
Who does the extension cover?
Everyone whose return was due on 30 September 2026. That includes salaried people, other individuals and associations of persons.
Is the extension real or a fake circular?
It is real. We read it on FBR's own website, linked from the fbr.gov.pk home page. Check any circular there before you trust it.
Will FBR extend again after 15 October?
No one can say. In tax year 2025, FBR extended a second time, to 31 October. But there is no rule that it will do so again. Plan to file by 15 October.
I already filed. Do I need to do anything?
No. If your return and wealth statement are in Completed Tasks on IRIS, you are done. If you made a mistake, you can revise the return under section 114(6).
What if I miss 15 October?
The late penalty under section 182 and the ATL surcharge under section 182A apply from 16 October. Filing within a month of the due date cuts the penalty by 75%.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Sections 182, 182A and 214A are from FBR's consolidated Income Tax Ordinance 2001, amended to 30 June 2026. The extension requests from trade bodies and the reported fake circular are from press reports.
