Google published two studies on 3 November 2026 showing that students who used Gemini's Guided Learning mode learned more. In a University of Tokyo trial with more than 300 students, scores rose 8.1 percentage points with Guided Learning against 5.3 points without it. Students in Pakistan can open the same tool free at gemini.google.com, under More tools, then Guided Learning.

We read Google's announcement and Gemini's own help page on 4 November 2026. The news also includes a second change for schools: Google says it is rolling out teacher-led Guided Learning in Google Classroom around the world. Below are the results, how to use the tool step by step, and what is and is not available in Pakistan.

Guided Learning gave 1.5 times the learning gain in one study session

In Google's University of Tokyo trial, students using only normal web resources improved by 5.3 percentage points on a statistics lesson. Students who also had Guided Learning improved by 8.1 points. Google calls this 1.5 times higher learning gains in a single study session.

The trial was a randomised controlled trial, which means students were split into two groups by chance so the groups could be compared fairly. More than 300 students took part. All of them studied a statistics topic on their own for half a day. Half of them also had Guided Learning in the Gemini app.

Google says students did not mainly ask for quick answers. They asked for practice quizzes, step by step help and custom visual aids. That matters for anyone worried that AI just does the homework. In this trial, the tool was used more like a tutor.

Teachers in the UK pilot got time back for one to one help

The second study was a four week pilot in three UK secondary schools across four subjects. Teachers said Guided Learning handled students' first questions during independent work. That gave teachers more time for targeted one to one help with students who needed it most.

Most surveyed students said they felt comfortable asking Gemini for help when stuck. Teachers also asked for two things: more visibility into how students used the materials, and ways to keep students focused on the assignment. Google says it has now added educator insights on student interactions and the option to anchor a conversation on curriculum the teacher uploads.

These are Google's own studies, published on Google's blog. We could not read the full research papers, so the figures above are as Google reported them.

Google Classroom is getting teacher-led Guided Learning worldwide

Google says it is rolling out teacher-led Guided Learning globally in Google Classroom. Teachers can assign guided lessons and track student progress. Google did not give a date for Pakistan, so schools here should check their Classroom account rather than assume it is already switched on.

For a Pakistani school already using Google Classroom, the practical difference is control. A student using Gemini at home picks any topic. A teacher-led lesson keeps the student on the topic the teacher set, and the teacher can see the progress. Schools using Google Workspace for Education can also read our guide to Gemini for Education for teachers and schools in Pakistan.

How to use Guided Learning in Gemini from Pakistan

Gemini's help page gives the steps for a computer: go to gemini.google.com, open the menu, choose More tools, then Guided Learning, type your question and submit. You must be signed in. On the mobile app the feature is being released gradually, so use the website if you cannot see it.

  1. Open gemini.google.com in Chrome or any browser and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Click Add Files, next to the prompt box.
  3. At the bottom, click More tools, then Guided Learning.
  4. Type your topic or question, for example "Explain photosynthesis for class 9 step by step". You can also upload your notes or a photo of a textbook page.
  5. Click Submit, then answer Gemini's questions as it walks you through the topic.
Steps to open Guided Learning in Gemini on a computer

Google's release notes say Guided Learning was opened to all users in August 2025, and the help page asks only that you are signed in. If Gemini itself does not open on your phone, the minimum phone requirements are listed in our guide on why Gemini is not available on some phones.

OpenStax textbooks inside Gemini do not work in Pakistan

The same help page lists OpenStax textbooks as a learning source you can call by typing @OpenStax. That feature is available only in English and only in the United States. It is also blocked for users under 18 and for work or school accounts. Guided Learning itself is not limited this way.

The page also says Gemini may add YouTube videos to a lesson, but only when Gemini Apps Activity is turned on. If you turned activity off for privacy, you will still get text, diagrams and practice questions, just without videos.
