A plain wooden block on a dark wooden table, for a guide to sports quota admission at Quaid-i-Azam University

Short answer: Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) in Islamabad keeps 2% of its undergraduate seats for sports, with no more than one seat in any department. You are scored out of 100: 50 marks for your sports certificates and 50 for a trial in your game. You need at least 45 marks in total, and you must bring original certificates.

Most students think a sports seat means a sports trial alone. At QAU the certificate is half the score. A player with a strong trial but a weak certificate can still fall short.

We read the university's "Admissions Rules for Sports Quota" page and its "Reserved Seats" page on 14 October 2026. Both are official QAU pages. The sports rules on the page are dated 2014. We found no 2026 trial dates on those pages, so check the QAU announcements before you plan.

QAU keeps 2% of undergraduate seats for sports

The Reserved Seats page lists sports based admission as 2% of admitted students in the university, with a maximum of one seat in a department. It says you need sports certificates issued by the concerned authority and a pass in the trial of your game.

The sports rules on the QAU page apply to the morning programme. The page notes that the evening undergraduate programme admits on a self-finance basis only. The Syndicate approved the 2% reserved seats at its 163rd meeting on 27 September 2014.

One seat per department means competition is tight. A department with a very popular programme may give the sports seat to only one player, however many apply. You also still have to meet the department's own eligibility rules, because the admission committee checks them first.

Your certificate marks depend on the level you played at

QAU gives 50 marks for a national championship, 40 for a position at a university or board level, 30 for taking part at that level, and 20 for a position at district, tehsil, school or club level. The page lists the exact events for each band.

Here is how the four bands work in plain words. Playing in a national or national junior championship, or an under-16 or under-19 national championship, scores the full 50. A position holder at an inter-varsity championship, the Pakistan Inter Board games, the PM Youth Sports Festival, under-15, 17 or 19 regional academy events, or the under-16 Pakistan Sports Board event scores 40.

  1. National championship, national junior, under-16 or under-19 national: 50 marks.
  2. Position holder at inter-varsity, Pakistan Inter Board, PM Youth Sports Festival, under-15, 17 or 19 regional academy, or under-16 Pakistan Sports Board: 40 marks.
  3. Participation at those same events, or at an inter-collegiate championship or the Football League (A) Islamabad: 30 marks.
  4. Position holder at inter-district, inter-tehsil, inter-school or inter-club tournaments: 20 marks.

Our guide to finding your national sports federation can help you reach the body that issues national certificates. A club or district certificate alone gives you at most 20 of the 50 certificate marks.

Certificate marks by level of achievement for the QAU sports quota

The trial tests basic technique for 50 marks

The trial is held in your game by experts, and the university sports committee makes the final list. The page gives volleyball as an example: service, reception, setting, smash, blocking and game fitness. The whole trial is marked out of 50.

The committee decides the priority of games. The trials are held as per the HEC sports calendar.

Prepare for the basics of your game, not tricks. A strong trial can lift a player with only a district-level certificate over the 45 percent mark, because the two parts are added together. For example, 20 certificate marks and 30 trial marks make 50, which passes.

Bring originals because photocopies are not accepted

The page is clear on this. Candidates must show original merit sports certificates or medals at the trial, and photocopies are not accepted. QAU also verifies each certificate with the authority that issued it.

Keep your documents in order before you travel. A fake or doubtful certificate can end your claim. Do not rely on a scan on your phone.

  • Original sports certificates and medals for each event you claim.
  • Your admission form and the roll number slip once you apply.
  • Your CNIC or B-Form and your matric and intermediate results.
  • The kit for your game.

The process at another large university is similar. Our page on getting a sports quota seat at Punjab University shows how its trials and shortlist work. If you do not yet have certificates, the PSB talent identification system is one route to be noticed.

Check the dates on the QAU announcements before you apply

The sports rules page has no trial dates, fee or deadline. QAU posts admission announcements and circulars on the home page. Read the undergraduate admission advertisement for the current session, and look for the sports trial notice.

Apply for your programme first. Without a regular application for a department, the sports committee cannot place you. We did not find an application for the sports quota on its own, so assume you apply to the programme and then claim the sports seat.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 14 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read the QAU Admissions Rules for Sports Quota page and the QAU Reserved Seats page. The sports rules cite an Academic Council meeting on 22 September 2014 and a Syndicate meeting on 27 September 2014, so a newer rule may exist. We did not find current trial dates, fees or a deadline. We did not attend a trial. Confirm with the QAU admissions office before you travel.
