KP National Curriculum 2026 for Classes 9 to 12: 8 Subjects Change From 2027
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa adopts the National Curriculum 2026 for classes 9 to 12 from 2027 in 8 subjects, with new textbooks and board exams. What changes for you.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has adopted the National Curriculum of Pakistan 2026 for classes 9 to 12, starting from academic year 2027, in eight subjects: English, Urdu, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and General Science (classes 9 and 10 only). New textbooks will follow, and all eight KP boards must set exams to the new curriculum. Private schools and publishers need approval before using their own books.
The notification is from the Directorate of Curriculum and Teacher Education (DCTE) in Abbottabad, dated 9 September 2026. The provincial Elementary and Secondary Education Department posted it on its website on 22 October. We read it there on 6 November 2026. If your child is in class 8 or class 10 now, this is the curriculum their next board years will run on.
KP notified the National Curriculum 2026 for classes 9 to 12
DCTE Khyber Pakhtunkhwa notification No. 4031-45, dated 9 September 2026, notifies the National Curriculum of Pakistan 2026 for grades 9 to 12 with effect from academic year 2027. It follows a 4 September meeting chaired by the Secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education.
The legal basis is the KP Supervision of Curricula, Textbooks and Maintenance of Standards of Education Act 2011. That law makes DCTE the competent authority for curriculum in the province. Curriculum review committees first adjusted the national documents for KP, a step the notice calls "contextualization", and then DCTE notified them.

Eight subjects move to the new curriculum
Only eight subjects are listed: English, Urdu, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology and Physics for classes 9 to 12, and General Science for classes 9 and 10 only. Subjects such as Islamiat, Pakistan Studies and the arts subjects are not in this notification.
That is a sensible way to read it, and also the limit of what it says. It does not state what happens to the other subjects. They may come in a later notice, or stay on the current books for now. We would not assume either until DCTE says so.
General Science is for students who do not take the full science group in classes 9 and 10. Its inclusion means arts and humanities students in matric are affected too, not only science students.

New textbooks, and approval for private schools and publishers
The KP Textbook Board will develop or revise textbooks for classes 9 to 12 to match the new curriculum. Public and private schools must follow it. Private schools and publishers that use their own books need DCTE approval before those books reach classrooms.
The notice sets out four duties:
- The KP Textbook Board develops or revises the class 9 to 12 textbooks in the eight subjects.
- All KP boards set their exams according to NCP 2026.
- Public and private schools follow NCP 2026, and get DCTE approval for any textbooks they develop or revise.
- Private publishers get DCTE approval or a no objection certificate (NOC) before publishing textbooks and supplementary reading material for classes 9 to 12.
Teacher training material must change as well. The notice tells the Directorate of Professional Development (DPD) and all development partners to align their training manuals with the new curriculum and textbooks. Institutions or firms that do not comply can face action under Section 4 of the 2011 Act.
What changes for students and parents in KP
The change starts with academic year 2027, so students entering class 9 or class 11 then should expect new books in the eight subjects. Board exams for those classes will be set to the new curriculum. Students now in class 9 or 11 are not named in the notice.
| Group | What to watch |
|---|---|
| Class 8 students now | Class 9 from 2027 on the new curriculum in the eight subjects |
| Class 10 students now | Class 11 from 2027 on the new curriculum in the eight subjects |
| Private school parents | Ask whether the school's books carry DCTE approval |
| Teachers | Training aligned to NCP 2026 through DPD |
| Board candidates | Papers set per NCP 2026 once the new books are in use |
The notice does not say whether a student who started class 9 in 2026 switches books in class 10. Ask your school. This is also the season of board registration: BISE Peshawar's class 9 and 11 registration fees for 2026 still apply to this year's intake.

How KP compares with Punjab and the Federal Board
Punjab and the Federal Board are also changing what students study and how they are tested. Each provincial government sets its own school curriculum since education became a provincial subject, so dates and details differ by province.
Punjab's cabinet approved a new school curriculum with a lighter book load in September 2026. The Federal Board, for its part, is moving five core subjects to a paper pattern with 50 per cent MCQs. KP's notice is about curriculum and books, not paper pattern. It does not mention MCQ shares or marks.

How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked on 6 November 2026, about 3:45 pm PKT. We read the DCTE notification on National Curricula of Pakistan 2026, posted by the KP Elementary and Secondary Education Department on 22 October 2026, as a scanned PDF. We did not open the curriculum documents on the DCTE website for this piece.
